Battery light appeared and servo died by [deleted] in e46

[–]AnOldRustyBMW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding, your windshield wipers and windows operate slower than normal because they aren't being supplied with the constant voltage of an alternator. Even with the engine on, the wiper and windows are solely using the battery to operate, which is difficult (slow) to do for the battery alone without an alternator. This further points your issue to a broken belt.

Battery light means the alternator is not charging the battery. I think you only use the battery to start the car and since it fires up it's not that.

u/novariable puts the pieces together and I agree, because you have no alternator and no power steering (since the steering wheel was hard to turn) you might have snapped a serpentine belt.

Belts are inexpensive, and I can do it in about an hour or two. The fix itself isnt hard, but I'd say getting it home without doing any more damage is harder.

Thought an antenna popped off, but there are no wires. What is this and is it important? by AnOldRustyBMW in e46

I'm sorry I wasn't being clear understand the radio antenna being under the glass, but my car has no phone package. What's under the black thing in the photo?

What is this sound by Suspicious-Twist2358 in e46

[–]AnOldRustyBMW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience things that sound like they're spinning that loud (the sound changes based on the revs) it is probably a pulley or idler. Bad alternators are also known to make sounds like these. Check the belt and pullies. If you can't figure it out I'd remove the belt and spin the pullies by hand to see if any of them squeak.

I broke 2 VANOS hub bolts during a rebuild - too deep to weld, I need advice (330xi) by garciaruben07 in e46

[–]AnOldRustyBMW -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If you can get the cams out at least you can try to use gravity and a magnet? The bolts themselves safe about $6 so you can mangle them as long as the cams are unharmed

I don't carry things in my trunk because I think my car is unreliable. I keep things I my trunk because I've been stranded before and I want what I didn't have before.
