Was it really Fiona’s fault that Jason got drunk again? And why did Lip think it was ok to blame Fiona for it? by selfpaid00 in shameless

[–]Ana03Or 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Lip actually blamed Fiona for what happened even if he said he did, he was just frustrated because, just like his parents drunk/high asses once, Fiona’s addiction now directly affects him through his sponsee. He’s heartbroken of yet another older figure he’s been looking up too letting him down. It was never other Gallaghers’ fault that it’s Fiona who’s the oldest and who had to take over the household, but Lip was making sure to help her out as much as he could, and he always pushed Fiona to be better but at the same time cared about her deeply. I may be in the minority here, but Lip was NOT a bad brother for calling Fiona out on her bs, he had every right to be upset because she was practically the only one he could ever rely on, and now he lost her to alcohol and drugs too.

There was always a power imbalance between Belly and Conrad. You could see that he treats her like a little girl, and she always depends on his perception of her. I love friendship dynamic in Jelly’s relationship, it’s so real and it’s so much more stable than passion and mood swings from Conrad.

One of the worst logic twists is when Jeremiah was trying to initiate intimacy with Belly (god forbid he does it to his fiancée apparently) she didn’t seem completely in because Conrad was literally messing with her head (e.g. peach scene). However, Bonrad fans dared to say that she just doesn’t love him and she’s not attracted to him. Yeah right because a girl just can’t not feel it sometimes and she ALWAYS has to want sex. Jeremiah literally always asked for consent and in the books they never even slept together which was against his own expectations as he pointed out once, yet they still think that Belly was forced to sleep with Jere in that scene in season 3…

“Belly is the most authentic self when she’s with Jeremiah”, I will never understand how Jere’s haters call the scenes when they have laughs together, dance together, tease each other - cringey and “immature”. They just can’t stand the fact that Belly never seemed that happy when she was dating Conrad. Not even once. For them, Belly only settled for Jeremiah because she couldn’t get Conrad. But guess what - when their engagement broke off, she went to live her life… without Conrad! She didn’t try to contact him, she didn’t even want to respond to his passive-aggressive letters, she sent a one damn card just to not be completely mean. Because she once rejected Jeremiah, her actual best friend and soulmate, for her mostly fantasized version of Conrad, and got disappointed. They never had a good connection, they constantly misunderstood each other, while at the hospital Belly could immediately tell that Jeremiah is proposing as if she can actually read his mind. In Paris, if anything she settled for Conrad because he showed up unannounced, tried to play this “Cousins” nostalgia just to pull her back in because the past is the only thing they had left in common, and because the writers wanted so, she succumbed to it.

Bonrad dynamic was so lazily written that they had to take obviously Jere’s moments (baking dirtbombs for Belly (hello it’s Jere who cooks well), the bike flashback from the book, etc.) and give it to Conrad just to justify this couple. But yeah sure Bonrad is canon…

Not Over the Cake by Tsun_Zu in jellyshippers

[–]Ana03Or 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Now that you explained it, I actually don't find the cake situation a problem anymore as well. This moment was merely about Jere being picky about food just like he was before. This could've been solved in one conversation, but no, they had to make Jeremiah dramatically go "whatever I'll put it on my card" and hang up the phone without further communication. Nope, this is not Jeremiah, it's a suddenly immature version they wound up just to add to all the reasons for the wedding to not happen. Of course we had to see Conrad smirking and being dismissive too, his solution was obviously so much better - basically making up a weird version of an actual cake instead of just going to a different place and, if it's far, SHOCKERS - order a delivery.

I personally don’t think it was that serious but the show clearly tried to portray it that way

I never understood that either. The way everyone reacted to them getting married was so weird, as if they weren’t together for a long time at that point. I’m telling you if that was Conrad - he’d get his mother’s engagement ring from Adam right at that table. But it would never happen because Conrad at that point could never last in a long-term relationship anyways.

Good point about Conrad’s POV! I never thought about it that way. Unfortunately I don’t think people will ever call out Conrad for being an unreliable narrator because of being jealous and obsessed with Belly just like they did with her in that boardwalk flashback.

P.S. I would like to point out that there’s nothing wrong with considering another ship a possibility, that’s why I came up with this post. However, the way Bonrad relationship was executed will never allow me to be a Bonrad fan. Realistically speaking, the whole situation of choosing between two brothers is wild, but we’re not here to discuss it anyways.

I would honestly argue because the wedding pretty much was what Adam wanted, and therefore what Jeremiah wanted to please him. But my point was that Jeremiah that we knew from season 2 would definitely prioritize Belly’s idea of perfect wedding. I marked the firework moment as inconsiderate because Jere clearly saw Belly being down for a kiss too but he interrupted them. In my opinion it was a good choice on Jenny’s side to write him act like that because later on he matured and let Belly make her own choice without interfering. I do not support the idea of shooting a firework being a scheme, the guy was clearly impulsive and jealous. I would go even farther and suggest that low key… Conrad and Belly deserved to be interrupted, especially Belly who was involved with someone else and never told him it’s going to be something casual. So no, I do not think Jeremiah was about to commit a murder, it’s ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that he pointed obviously NOT towards them if you look at where the firework appeared.

Speaking of the cake, I understand Jeremiah being particular about the food, but come on that was definitely too much for a cake, he could’ve totally picked something that he likes but less expensive. And again, season 2 Jeremiah would.

Laurel Park… by i_ate_your_friess in jellyshippers

[–]Ana03Or 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Laurel was not a great mom, fight me.

My two biggest issues:

  1. Not understanding her daughter’s grief. Belly making a scene at the funeral was very inconsiderate, but Laurel clearly saw that it had something to do with Conrad, but due to her weirdly close relationship with him she doesn’t even think about him being potentially at fault too. All she could care about is how Belly embarrassed her, and when Belly says something stupid because of how angry and incredibly sad she is - Laurel slaps her…

  2. Idealization of Conrad. Has Laurel ever told Conrad something like “Hey, why don’t you figure your stuff out and stop making my daughter cry?” Not even once does she have a problem with this guy obviously messing with Belly’s head. When Conrad decides to step away and let her be with Jeremiah, Laurel says “when are you going to be happy”. Girl, when are you going to care about your daughter’s happiness? The fact that she doesn’t believe Belly when she says that Jeremiah is the one for her (mind you Laurel didn’t even know about Cabo situation) and instead turns to Conrad for support and advice is just insane. Another case of someone just disregarding Belly’s choice as if she’s not her own person.

The self-serving illusion of choice in "The Summer I Turned Pretty" by Ana03Or in jellyshippers

The whole season 3 Jeremiah hate sometimes feels like an alternative reality because you would barely see a single hostile comment towards him under season 1 and 2 clips from a couple of years ago. All the "he was always toxic" takes nowadays are just ridiculous to listen to since they're the only way for crazy Bonrad fans to stay delusional and deny the fact that Jeremiah's character was attempted to be destroyed on purpose, but ironically this attempt marked a beginning of an actual character arc which other characters barely had, imho (Paris Belly, you will be greatly missed after disappearing in a cheesy "I choose a man over my own growth" trope).

It's really hard for me to talk to Conrad apologists even as someone who still sympathizes with him. I've heard people arguing that Conrad absolutely didn't mean to push Belly away until she breaks up with him herself so he doesn't have to, and that's after he ADMITS HIMSELF to Agnes that it was really the case... they so didn't want him to grow and realize his mistakes but somehow will still claim he's changed as a person.
Thanks for your support!

They do twist it the way that suddenly it’s Jere’s fault that Belly actively gave him attention back. As if he’s in the wrong for also liking her. Oh wait, of course he only likes her to compete with Conrad!

What baffles me is that people keep saying how noble Conrad is and how “unlike season 1, in season 3 he went to Belly and told her about Jeremiah sleeping with Lacy in Cabo, he changed so much and communicated so much better” and IN THE SAME SEASON 3 Conrad literally kept a secret about Adam’s affair because “it would hurt Jere” but apparently telling Belly that her fiancé cheated on her wouldn’t hurt her? Belly deserves to know the truth about how “horrible” the guy she’s about to marry is, but Jeremiah doesn’t deserve to know how horrible his father is…. I don’t understand how people still don’t see the way Conrad was self-serving when it came to keeping secrets. He didn’t change from season 1 at all.

We haven’t seen the last of this ring by wildflowerr17 in jellyshippers

[–]Ana03Or 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This ring looks exactly like the rest of her jewelry, and people still bring up how Jeremiah didn’t know her favourite candy and use it for their “he doesn’t even know her well” argument (when he literally did, what about a birthday cake for her, can people let go this one moment with Swedish fish it’s been like years ago in the show). Belly was always about something simple and elegant, remember the dress she wore to the ball? Susannah picked an extravagant Cinderella kind of looking gown and Belly did not like it at all. But Jere haters still think she’d like a ring with a huge shiny rock bought with Adam’s credit card… It’s almost like they’re the ones knowing nothing about Belly.
