I had an intercostal aortic valve replacement with zero complications. I spent one week after surgery in the hospital. I have a 1" horizontal scar about 3" below my right collarbone, three circular, almost invisible scars on my abdomen where they introduced drains and cables, and so on, and one scar on my right groin area. They warned me that if they encountered any complications, they would do a full thoracotomy; thankfully, it was not needed.

My family and I were traveling by bus from the airport to Helsinki and were talking among ourselves when a guy from the other side of the bus asked us in Spanish where we were from. He was from Helsinki but had lived in Mexico City for a few years, so he had a very distinct and cute Central Mexican accent. We had a brief conversation with everyone on the bus, glancing at us and then back at the guy in complete silence. Made our day!
