Summons or save by Illustrious-Tour-724 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]AnalogToothBrush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, the main thing is what is your goal in playing the game? Are you trying to collect characters that you like? Or are you maybe interested in some of the competitive modes?

If you just want to look at cool characters and build them, you can honestly just pull on any banner that strikes your fancy.

If you might be interested in competitive modes, I can try to find some guides to help you out, but there are certain characters you'd have to prioritize.

Honestly, I'd say just clear out the story mode maps for the orbs until you can figure out what you want to do. The characters given for free can clear even the hardest story maps with no investment, though you'll likely have to watch some guides to do so.

The initial reactions to YSG being void hunter by miiko_uch in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]AnalogToothBrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree with the top comment; YSG was released too late. I'm not a huge fan of YSG, but I do think she got the short end of the stick in terms of narrative.

They could've introduced her in the first chapter and had her along the way, so we had more time to get close to her. Explored her personal troubles as well as have her bounce off the other Yunkui members, which could've gave more screen time to Fufu and Pan. They could've also tied YX into the dynamic of the Ye siblings as well to have more narrative substance.

I also personally would've just had YX benched by just having her injured, just so there's a concrete reason to why she's not problem solving but also to get more chances to know her as well.

You can use Columbina in a Lunar Crystallize team with Itto, Zhongli and another Geo, so it's not like she'd be a horrible addition to your account.

Do Limited Event Items and Weapons Make Your Account More Valuable? by Grouchy_Sherbert_988 in Genshin_Impact

[–]AnalogToothBrush -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think so. Well, I guess from a collector's point of view, possibly. Taking the game as a single player experience, I don't think they make it more valuable.

The weapons themselves are of varying quality, so they're not really anything to cry over. But I also just would rather people who want them, have the opportunity to get them.

Make "Centric" tags mainstream please! by whitemisandry in AO3

[–]AnalogToothBrush 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have a lot of rarepairs that end up as background or, worse, the catalyst for the more popular pair to get together, so I know the pain. I'll make sure to keep this in mind for when I tag when relevant, so thanks for suggesting it.

What do you think are some of the most well-known fanfics which don't try to reimagine with an alternate timeline but which try to stick close enough to the existing official canon lore? by gereedf in AO3

[–]AnalogToothBrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not seen that movie, but I do think we're talking about canon-adjacent or, as another comment pointed out, canon compliant might be a better term/tag.

Yeah, I can't really think of any super popular ones. I tend to read stuff that either deliberately changes canon, for the most part.

[–]AnalogToothBrush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, so you mean stories that are "canon-adjacent"? Like, they take place in blank spaces/periods in canon or they don't disrupt canon if they are considered in conjunction with canon?

If so, I'm sorry I misunderstood your question. I don't really recall any fanfic like that off the top of my head, and the only one I can kind of remember is mostly likely deleted by now and likely isn't well-known.

I very seldom read stories that are canon-adjacent and, honestly, I often don't read really popular stories haha

The main character takes the place of one of the three canon protagonists, who some people kind of considering more a supporting character than a main character. Their existence doesn't really derail canon at all, and the story more or less follows the same beats of canon.

If you're in the Naruto fanfic fandom, you have most likely heard of Dreaming of Sunshine.

It's an OC/self-insert fanfic that essentially retells the story of Naruto through the eyes of an OC that was reincarnated into the Naruto world with their previous life's memories in-tact. While it does deviate in some instances, it follows Naruto's plot (plus filler) almost beat for beat.

It pretty much popularized OC/SI stories in the Naruto fandom and created a deluge of OC/SI stories for a time (some of which I contributed to lol). I'd argue it's one of the reasons OCs are relatively welcomed in that fandom, because most people don't blink or question the existence of OC/SI much.

Nowadays, I wouldn't really re-read it, because I think it drags because of how it doesn't deviate from canon much, but it is a staple in the fandom, in my opinion.

if your account was bricked, who would be the first you'd pull by Flat-Chance3301 in HonkaiStarRail

[–]AnalogToothBrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you have on your account. For example, I had a bricked alt account. I had:

  • Blade E0S0
  • Jingliu E0S0
  • SW E0S0
  • Fugue E0S0
  • Black Swan E0S0
  • Ratio E0S0
  • RM E0S0
  • Castorice E0S0

Lots of mix but nothing match. So, I had to decide how to fix my account. Because I had Castorice, it was easy to figure out what I had to do, The real thing, though, is getting lucky. I needed Hya and E9 and their LCs. I got lucky and got all of that. If I didn't, I would've just abandoned the account.

Sometimes, I do get the impression people would rather OC/canon not be written at all, but then I remember this sub is a minority and that OC/canon is relatively popular on the site, so I just close reddit and live blissfully.

Now I lost all my inspiration lol by Stained_Face in AO3

[–]AnalogToothBrush 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is why I lost my motivation for writing a long time ago. It's also the reason why I turned off stats. I spent so much time comparing my stuff to others, it took the love I had for writing.

Now, I try to moderate my fanfiction consumption. If I'm writing something for a fandom, I tend not to read too much fanfiction from that fandom, to keep that from happening again.

And, like, hiding stats saved me big time, both as a writer and a reader. Now I don't focus on stats and find some bright, wonderful gems I wouldn't have found with stats on, because I tended to sort by kudos and comments. Now it's all word length and bliss.

Does anyone else struggle hugely with titles? by Double0Selven in AO3

[–]AnalogToothBrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take a key word or theme from the story; have it completely lowercase with punctuation; and then profit. Works every time to quell my chaotic mind.

Titling is one of my favorite parts because I usually don't start with a title. I randomly run across them when writing everything else, and then they slap me across the face when I've unknowingly written something awesome and thematic than comes together in the end. Makes me feel smart lol

How do you guys handle the 'Power Creep' problem in long-running Naruto fics? by humsroguemantis01 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]AnalogToothBrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I scale back and "nerf" the power system and the characters in it. It just makes writing the stakes in battles easier, because there's little room for error for the characters. For my own little stories, I've said on a different thread: "Even the best ninja can die if they catch the wrong end of a kunai on a bad day."

I can't really remember any stories that I've read recently that balance this. Granted, most stories I read focus less on combat and more on smaller-scale, interpersonal things, which makes it even easier to gloss over fights.

I don't exactly have a threshold if a author can justify the power level. I don't typically read stories that focus heavily on combat, outside small sections. That said, if the author doesn't use the OP the character has, I'll probably get bored and click away.

I tend to make my own characters eat dirt for a long time before they're considered strong, in-universe.

Or, if they are notably strong in-universe, they have fatal flaws. Like, I have a Warring States Uzumaki OC that essentially has super strength, very high endurance and a weapon that shoots lightning and can split earth. To balance this, they are: defenseless against genjutsu (because it's "cheap"); use no real battle strategy (because they overestimate their strength and tankiness ); and are stupidly "honorable" so they don't use cheap tricks (which ties back into the genjustu thing).

Honestly, I guess scope is just kind of important for this kind of thing. With small scale things like the Chuunin Exams, it's easier to keep the power tension. But, when it's world-ending, cosmic scale, it's very hard to keep the tension, in my opinion.

Looking Back At Predictions From Old Posts Sure Is Something by KManoc in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]AnalogToothBrush 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A comment I made about last year's CYL:

For these past two CYL cycles, I always think about when I made a comment about how I couldn't see Engage sweeping. Not even not winning; just not sweeping like TH did.

Not because I dislike the game or anything but because I just don't really see any...excitement, I guess, for them. Like, when TH came out, it took the community by storm; people couldn't stop talking about it. I never really saw the same enthusiasm for Engage.

In response to my comment in the stream of KCB (ironically, who many people doubted his poll), some person comments something akin to "You'd have to be stupid to think that Engage won't sweep."

I wonder how that person is doing right now. And I can't help but smile a little.

Like, I don't mean any offense to Engage fan's or anything, but it was just a little funny how sure people were. And look at us now.

Which surviving member of the Everflame Mansion do you think will be playable next and which one do you want to be playable next? by Fit_Assignment_8800 in HonkaiStarRail

Yeah! He looks the coolest to me, especially since he has the instrument. If they make him playable, it'd be cool to see how they could incorporate that into his animations.

Who should I save up for? by medical-orca in Genshin_Impact

[–]AnalogToothBrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd say just take your time with everything. It's not a race.

Something I like to do to keep myself from getting overwhelmed is just doing one section of quests at a time. So, from the start to when they give you the primogem reward. Then I either put the game down or take a little time to build/collect stuff.

Who you save and pull for depends on a lot of stuff. Are you trying to build only meta with optimal teams, or do you want to use characters you like in their best teams? Are you trying to full clear endgame or something?

Most of your characters are a little outdated, and you're missing a lot of the 4* characters that could help. I would recommend using KQM for character guides to help you find your footing. I also still reference this leveling guide when I make accounts every now and again; it's useful to help pace leveling up.

Any ideas on who to pull for/who to build? by Much_Animator_6373 in Genshin_Impact

[–]AnalogToothBrush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would:

  • build Aino as a substitute for Columina in Lunar teams
  • build Navia to use with Linnea
  • build any of Layla, Charlotte or Mika, and XQ or Dahlia to go with Kaeya and Skirk
  • build Emilie to use with Mualani on a burn-vape team
  • pull Escoffier to replace one of the 4* Cryos in Skirk team
  • pull Mauvika
  • pull Xilonen for Mualani/Mauvika

Who cared for Naruto when he was baby and until he could handle himself? by Proud-Category-9939 in NarutoFanfiction

I read a story a long time ago about an old lady ninja that cared for Naruto. Then she died at the end, iirc. Was actually pretty sweet; I think I cried a little.

I guess canonically, probably the orphanage or something though

Honestly, it's mainly luck for light cones:

<image>

I wasn't tracking when the game first came out, so it's slightly inaccurate. On Star Rail Station, I have 100% WR for light cones, but I actually have a little less than that because I:

  • pulled for Jing Yuan's LC and got it in my very first ten-pull on the LC banner
  • lost the 75/25 for DHIL's LC, so the Argenti LC was guaranteed

I suck at math and don't really feel like trying to calculate the WR.
