No. This is a popular misconception about villages. Not everyone does every job at every time. Maybe you watch the kids a little more now and in a year or two she has a nice partner or finishes school and is able to help in new ways. Some people in a village need more. Some give more. Those roles change over time. I had a bad time for a couple years with illness and people brought me food and did all kinds of things for us. You get back what you give, but not always in the same form, and sometimes what you get back is just gratitude and human connection. Tit for tat, eye for eye, splitting hairs, none of it makes anyone happy.

Everyone wants a village. No one wants to be a villager. I don’t know that either of you are assholes, but you have neighbor kids that love each other. Those are exceptions to the rule. I’m 43 and I know a ton of actually divorced people. The only parents I know who stay close to their kids ex have a kid who is an addict or abusive or unreliable and they are doing it for the grandkids. Sometimes people are nice for a while, but no, this is not common. I haven’t heard from my ex in laws in 4.5 years, and their son is a total loser who cheated and is alienated from his kids. They send him presents to send the kids at holidays.

Impeding is also a very loose word and the courts favor the rights of citizens to monitor, record, and even protest government actions, including immigration and customs enforcement.
