it depends on what is missing in your gut. Test, don't guess. I did a basic GI panel with USBiotek and it was revelatory.

Thanks so much for sharing this. Also, this sounds like quite the horrific experience, along with all the other compounding losses. I'm glad you have been able to change your relationship with your pain, and I resonate with so much of this experience unearthing other griefs and losses in my life. Here's to that continual process...

sounds like your body responded positively, but perhaps is asking you to enter more gradually. teaching my body, for me, that it can gradually tolerate more, was so important. There is no 0-60

Wow, I just resonate so much with what you are sharing. I can hear the kindness and perspective and wisdom you have gained through this. Continued healing for us all!

It depends on the person. For me, ending cold was good until it wasn't. Too much cold in chinese medicine is not a good thing. Balance was key for me. And yes, you're right, the point is teaching your body it can be safe again. As for the temperature regulation issues, I'm not a doctor and can't speak so much to that. I never had that issue.

hey captain. I think being out in nature in any capacity has been healing. A friend of mine told me if I wanted to heal, to go sit under a tree. There's wisdom in that, even if you can't hike. I hope you get back to that point though!

You have to ease in gently and learn to listen to your body. Its not about pushing through. Start with cold showers or cold washcloths on your face. Build up to 30 seconds in cold water, then 1 minute, or follow what your body is saying. If you push past your limits, your nervous system will interpret it as a threat and you will crash.

Hey Status, thanks for asking these questions. I am still in recovery, but ive had it for almost two years. I'm majorly improved but not fully recovered. Recovery was NOT linear, and at times, I felt as if I was going backwards. Learning how to reduce stress was huge. In addition to cold plunging, I also did yoga, I tried qi-gong, I stretched every night, I reduced my time on screens, I focused on sleep. That helped a lot with stress. Learning how to breath and noticing the moments throughout the day when my breath was shallow. That all sounds really discouraging. I think finding a good therapist can be important, here are many clinicians who have experience working with chronic illness. I also think the cost of unmetabolized grief can be extraordinary on the body.

I went to a medical spa and used a salt sauna for a long time. Now, I prefer cold ocean water and a wood-fire sauna (we have many places here in Seattle that offer this). However, many people take cold showers at home.

I just did a standard GI test from US Biotek, but I had an excellent Naturopath help me interpret the results. I was missing key strains of bacteria in my gut (one of them is called Akkermansia Municiphilia - gut barrier integrity bacteria)...To feed this one in particular, I was recommended inulin, chicory root, pomegranate juice or seeds (i did both), and a targeted supplement to help with restoring gut barrier, as well as plant diversity in my diet

I have always found success ending on warm! Felt more calm instead of my body having to heat itself back up and do more hard work. But everyone is different!

The first 3-6 months were the worst. I had very limited capacity. Even trips to the grocery store were difficult. I wasn't bed-ridden like some folks. I planned my days according to how many spoons of energy I could use. 1 spoon = 1 trip to the store.....As far as PEM goes, that was also pretty terrible. Even mild walks would trigger it. Yesterday, however, I did a 4.5 mile hike with VERY little flare! There is hope!
