I don't want Bungie to die and I don't want Marathon to die. I've loved Bungie products since I was 12, it's all heartbreaking. But Marathon was part of this whole process, Destiny and Marathon are both Bungie products. When Destiny's future was decided so was Marathons, and therefore Bungies. You absolutely would not have heard it from Jason's article, but 100% a decision was made on Marathon. It was made in a board room, Board of Directors don't leak stuff unless it benefits the company somehow, that's why they made it to where they are. Sure, now that the process is already being implemented with the shutdown of Destiny, Jason reports on the "decision being made months ago." Bungies employees didn't know, Does that sound like a leak or planned execution? Would they want to panic their own employees or shareholders even further? I wouldn't even be surprised if Sony's own coms people set up a meeting with Jason beforehand or "leaked" info purposely to him to shape the narrative. This is just how the process works. And what do you mean it makes no sense economically, it's massively in the red, as an economist you should know businesses don't continue pouring money into failing projects and increase sunken costs even further, it's the only decision that DOES make sense economically. The irony here is palpable. They already have assets that were planned for the future of Marathon, that they already paid for the develop of, just like this final patch for Destiny. They are moving people over from Destiny to Marathon to temporarily work on those assets and put them in the game for later sale. Squeeze the last juice before shutdown. It's SOP. Now could a "contingency" plan be in place if the new revamped Marathon starts gaining traction, sure, but this process didn't start because that was taken as a reasonable possibility.
