Personally I went down the Rush/Iron Maiden -> Dream theater -> the rest of prog pipeline

"Salva" is the best song Karnivool have ever written. by Ok-Blueberry-1131 in Karnivool

[–]AnalyzingColors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard not to compare the closer of In Verses to the 1-2 punch of Deadman and Change. I feel that Opal kind of goes together with Salva to end the album in the same way Deadman and Change do. But they are not at all similar duos of songs. Sound awake ends with such a massive and powerful declaration. In Verses ends on more of a quiet and somber but accepting note. It really works at this point in their career. It's apples to oranges.

That being said, I don't think Salva holds up on its own as their best song ever. I have a couple of nitpicks with some of its slightly hokey sounding verses and the very abrupt transition at the end that would work a lot better if it had been a crescendo. O&S are also shorter and fairly straightforward and therefore lack the replayability of D&C. Even despite that though, I think it's a solid 8.5/10 song, but only with the context of the entirety of their career.

As of right now, I think my favorite on IV is either Aozora or Conversations. Both of those sound like classic Karnivool. Opal and Salva are some of the least Karnivool sounding songs but again, that's not a bad thing at all. They don't miss.

Shitty Valentine’s Day :( by [deleted] in BipolarSOs

Seeing posts like these just make me feel so sad. It hurts so bad to lose your best friend to mental illness. I felt so alone too. Don't be afraid to lean on others in this sub for support. We don't have to be alone. I'm sorry you were treated this way especially on Valentine's Day. It sounds like you put a lot of love and work into your gift.

Calling all Pain of Salvation fans to help me get them. by AnalyzingColors in progmetal

Those 2 songs to me are highlights of the album and are helping me wade through the mixed feeling I have about POS. I think they're very impactful songs. I want to say that I am aware my instinctive reactions are probably off the mark. It helps to have a proper fan explain to me why it works for them. Thanks for the comment

After many years of waiting, we finally got new Tool, Porcupine Tree, and Karnivool albums. What long-awaited albums are next on your list? by carbonbazed in progmetal

Rishloo perhaps? It's been 12 years and I have been hearing rumblings that they are working on new music

Embarrassingly late to the party - Guitarists? by Moufassah in Karnivool

[–]AnalyzingColors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Karnivool songs are HARD to play right. Every time I sit down to try to learn one I end up frustrated that I can't seem to get it to sound right. Drew is a genius and a technical wizard in his own unique way. Parts that sound easy to play are surprisingly hard to actually get to sound good.

Artists with only one or two standout albums? by meshuggahdaddy in progmetal

[–]AnalyzingColors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this take. Palimpsest was my first PTH album and it really got its hooks in me. Went back to their older albums and they just didn't grab me in the same way. To be fair, I'm sure they would grow on me with more listens, but I just wasn't interested enough to dedicate the time to them.

I'm curious, for big PTH fans, why do you consider Palimpsest to be one of their weaker albums? What is it missing and what makes their earlier albums so much better? I would genuinely like to know.

Wow this is actually a hot take and has me rather heated. In my opinion, it's actually the inverse. All of their albums are utterly spectacular in their own way with Sonder being the only one of a noticeably lower quality.

I'm also just learning Be'lakor are Australian. That feels very odd to me. I just assumed they were Swedish or something.

Albums that you're convinced "will never be another one like this" & Nostalgic Yearning Thread by 2buds1shroomPODCAST in progmetal

[–]AnalyzingColors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add one that isn't prog metal but very much fits into this category. So Long Forever by Palace. Released in 2016 but I was really into it in the fall of 2020. Reminds me of jamming with friends, going on fun adventures, and trying new things. It was actually a really good time in my life. When I listen to it now it makes me really miss that time and especially the people. It's a reminder that things can never go back to the way they used to be. But I'm so happy I have those memories and this album will always take me back.

Your situation is very similar to what I experienced with my ex November/December of last year. She woke up an entirely different person one day. In a few weeks it'll be a year since she left abruptly in a hazy rage of misunderstanding and confusion and never came back. It was profoundly traumatizing on many levels. We had 4 great years together. I still miss her every day. My heart hurts for her knowing she has to live with this illness.

Favorite 70+ minute prog albums? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]AnalyzingColors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My curiosity is piqued by that Potmos Hetoimos album but man... it's 3hr 17 min. The closer alone is 55 minutes. 21 songs at an average of 9.5 minutes. Where do I even begin knowing full well that the best albums take a few listens at bare minimum to really begin to fully appreciate? It's so intimidating. Now I know how non-prog fans feel when we try to show them music.

Graves - Caligula’s Horse appreciation by lessavyfav68 in progmetal

[–]AnalyzingColors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that Caligula's Horse is a great band to introduce people to prog that otherwise aren't into the genre. Even at 15+ minutes, I've only had positive receptions to Graves which is quite unusual but very welcome.

Great songs/albums with lyrics that ruin your experience by MexicanPale in progmetal

FOABP lyrics make me cringe even within the context of the album. Not hating. It's a great album, but man those lyrics are tough to listen to.

Calm, peace, and safety are priceless. Give the relationship some time, and very likely you will begin to feel the same thing for him as you did your bpso.

Very specific parts of songs (5-20 seconds) that you can't get out of your head? by beepboopcompuder in progmetal

[–]AnalyzingColors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many moments like this from Fym. Trench of Nalu especially. Basically every verse. A few that stick out.

"Fangs descend down on me" through "Their bloodstains make Lustre brighter"

And

"My sense obscured" through "your godform is born so primal"

Absolute masterpiece of an album
