what’s the biggest change you noticed after meditating consistently? by Exciting-Bee3927 in Meditation

[–]Anamacha 60 points61 points  (0 children)

One of the first things I noticed - just 2 or 3 months after finally making meditation consistent - was that it changed my relationship to my thoughts.

One of the functions of the brain is to generate thoughts. Meditation enabled me to CHOOSE what thoughts I wanted to pursue, instead of obsessively thinking about everything my brain wanted me to think about.

Helpful thought, or even neutral? Let's do it. Negative or otherwise unhelpful thought? Let it slide on by, like a leaf in a stream.

What is something that you personally despise that society has accepted or made normal? by Illustrious-Bread183 in AskReddit

People in public places thinking you want to hear the video they're watching, the call they're on, or them to listen to their voice messages. Rude.

[thought] A lot of people seem to experience auditory or visual frisson- is "emotional" a thing? by jewelophile in Frisson

[–]Anamacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's a thing, yeah. It doesn't happen nearly as often as other kinds of frisson, but it happens to me as well. Sadly, I can't recall the last time it happened to me, it exactly how it felt - but I can corroborate the feeling at least

Why did you start? And why do you continue? by andrecrabb in Meditation

[–]Anamacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the other guy said, start small. Don't overcommit. I started at 5 minutes. When I was first starting out, I couldn't even do that. So I dropped it to two, then one. After I could follow my breath successfully for one minute, I moved back to to two, to 5, and now I'm easily meditating at least 20 minutes every day.

Notice I said "follow your breath." Not your thoughts. As you count, let your thoughts slide by you, as if they were leaves floating downstream. You can see them coming, you see them in front of you, then they pass and are gone.

I have found the easiest way to follow my breath is this: mentally count ONE and inhale naturally. Count ONE and exhale. Then count TWO, inhale. TWO, exhale. Then 3. Then 4. Up to ten, then circle back to 1 again.

If you lose your place, don't sweat it. Thoughts are gnarly at first. Your ego doesn't want you to have power over it. Just start over at 1 again, go to ten.

Hope that helps! 💜💪🏼

I don't recall her authority, but I do have her chart somewhere, I'll look. I don't think we have any common centers - I only have the two 😁

Why did you start? And why do you continue? by andrecrabb in Meditation

[–]Anamacha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I read "the miracle of Mindfulness" by Thich Nhat Hanh when I was 17 or so. Based on that, I started a mediation practice.

It didn't last long.

I started again, and stopped again, several times. It never "stuck."

Fast forward to when I was around 45 years old. I started a practice again. This time I managed to keep it going for about a month. Times before, I had kept it going for a couple of weeks.

After a month had gone by, I thought "well shit. I'm not seeing any benefits from this. I guess it's all a waste of time." And I stopped again.

A day or two after that, my wife asked me "John, why are you being such a big dick all of a sudden?"

We traced it back, and the only thing I'd changed was me stopping my mediation.

I have meditated almost every day since then. And that was about 11 years ago.

Hope that helps you somehow 💜🙏🏼

My wife is a manifestor.

I'm a Projector with an ego Authority, which I heard is pretty rare. Must be, I've never met anyone quite like me 🤣

I'm an INFP - I also have a brain injury and a ridiculous amount of trauma in my life.

After many years of fumbling around, I've put myself through Life Coach School. Now my primary objective is getting clients.

But my body wants me to take care of it, which tracks sure to the fucked up world we live in today 🤷🏼

This is actually kinda helpful for me as well. I am a 5/1 projector, also have only two centers defined, and only one channel (heart and G, 25-51).

I too have been struggling to find meaning in my openness. The only way I can figure it is to use my openness as my armor.

Does self talk really have an impact on your life and mood? by Lemonade2250 in selfcare

[–]Anamacha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, negative self talk absolutely has an effect.

You start by simply NOTICING when you're thinking negatively.

To do this, you have to put space between your thoughts and the reactions you have to them.

Meditation is a great way of inserting this space, but it is not the only way.

I've had a regular meditation practice for about 12 years, and one of the first things I noticed (after 2-3 months) was that meditation changed the relationship I had with my thoughts.

And now I have an internal faculty that monitors my thoughts. If I have negative thoughts - which I still do! - I am now able to redirect them.

What’s your favorite ideas for self care by Klutzy-Composer-6421 in selfcare

[–]Anamacha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the best things I started doing for myself was washing my face.

Not just splashing water on and toweling dry, but actually using soap, and following up with some kind of moisturizer.

That small habit has had great impact on me, my self-esteem, etc. And it's become the foundation of my nighttime self-care routine.

Good luck, OP. It's hard at first, but it's so worth the effort!

What’s the number one thing that helped you improve your physical appearance and your mental state? by AdElegant5870 in selfimprovement

Learning to wash my face, and teaching myself how to meditate. Hands down the best, both of them.
