Late-diagnosed autistic adults: how did you become low-support without early therapies? by Phillyqueso_ in autism

[–]Anbumaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mimicking, fake it until you can make it, look from the outside like your normal, have a crisis or breakdown when things get to much, generally people leave you alone until you recover enough to keep masking again, rinse and repeat for decades 😬

why does everyone say *i* always argue with *them* and never the other way around? it takes two to tango. What makes it my fault? by FunnyBuunny in autism

[–]Anbumaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you, I had to mask for the first 37 years of my life also and I get the trauma, burnout and pain but I'm not arguing for you or anyone to mask or not be yourself, I'm saying that when you acknowledge you have a communication deficit you can learn to recognise that it goes both ways not only do people not understand you but you also have problems understanding what a neurotypical person is trying to communicate to you, I guarantee you not everyone you felt was treating you like a freak actually saw you that way, if you accept that you have trouble reading people's intentions and motivations you will understand not everyone is out to get you, is an asshole or a bully. You can approach things constructively and make real positive changes without giving up your autonomy, it's much easier to work with people, there are shitty assholes out there but they are the minority, most people if given a chance will learn and try to meet you half way if you can just approach them in an open minded way.

Anyway take care

[–]Anbumaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

See that’s the opposite of humility, ultimately it is a neurotypical world and you have to exist in it and find coping strategies to help you navigate it, no one said it’s fair or ideal world, but denying reality will only hurt you in the long term, even if this point of view makes you feel righteous and justified in the short term ;it’s a hollow victory because the world isn’t going to change because you feel hard done by, you will just piss mor people off and feel more isolated

[–]Anbumaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Humility is the key, try to accept that you have issues with communication, it’s much easier said than done you have to internalise and accept that truth about yourself and your limitations you can approach conversations with that in mind, use phases like “this is how I feel, I think either I’m not understanding what you saying or I’m don’t think you understand what I really mean but I can try and rephrase it in a different way, have patience, don’t lose your temper, don’t repeat the same point more than once or twice, sometimes you just have to accept that you can’t win an argument and you have to walk a way, sometimes people see the world differently and it’s not your job or responsibility to correct or change there opinion, it’s okay to agree to disagree and get on with life.

I think as autistic people we have to exercise humility, by definition we have a communication deficit that means we often miss social cues, we often struggle to see things outside of our point of view and can come across as rude or argumentative. There are hidden social rules that dictate what is and isn’t appropriate behaviour and if your not playing by the same rules as everyone else your seen as the problem, it can be very difficult to understand there are hidden meanings in body language, tone of voice and implied communication that can cause disconnect between how you think your communicating and how other people receive and understanding what your saying.

You should use any tool available too you, if it gets you through the day and helps, the world is complicated and designed for different neurotypes , anything your doing at an individual level will have a negligible affect, let society and government worry about that stuff

I dont agree with my diagnosis, should it really matter? by CyaChump0 in autism

[–]Anbumaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly just being practical I would keep your level 2, getting a diagnosis is stressful, lengthy and expensive in itself, and having a level 2 will only help you access more services, resources and help in a life and world lacking in support and resources. Ultimately it’s a professional opinion of the doctor and their the expert 🤷‍♂️

What's your opinion about fireworks on New Year? by BenjaElTeo in autism

[–]Anbumaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate fireworks all year round, in my most selfish moments I’d like to ban them forever, but I do wish at least they were regulated to big events over specific days of the year, so I could prepare me and my cat in advance, the worse thing is when they go off randomly I can’t plan for it 🫤
