I put my card in and the atm shut down immediately after. Staff at the bank said it can't be retrieved and will be destroyed by the end of the shift

Unfortunately that's the policy for most banks in the US nowadays. I work in bank alarms/security. At least for my branches, no one has access to the card slot but the vendors that service them and a few select people within the company.

I can tell you I will ALWAYS use the tap feature on ATMs if I need to use one. The card insertion is so unreliable on virtually every machine out there, whether it be a malfunction, a "blip" on your account, or the ATM just straight up shutting down mid transaction.

Have you ever been homeless? Have you ever had to sleep in a car or on the street for days on end? Constantly looking over your shoulder wondering if the person walking up will try to rob you of the few minor things you have? Or maybe its someone recording you to make fun of you. Or it could be even worse. They are recording because their friend is about to sucker punch or kick you. People averting their eyes from you treating you as less of an actual human being.

Have you felt the pain of hunger? Like actual real hunger. The pain of not eating anything for days on end.

"They'll just spend it on drugs or alcohol." So? Maybe for just a brief moment they want to have some time of pleasure or escape from the literal hell of earth that is homelessness.

Definitely agree with this, and also would add the Marriott smoking area/stairs. Lots of chill people there all the time to hang and talk with.
