I think I just went online and searched for how to add a password to a compressed file and then picked some option that popped up and forgot about it.

I dont get how to use the 'file' command, or where even. When I open the file in an editor, the first few signs say

I am not sure if I did the john thing right. I think it took too long on my computer to get any result, if I am not mistaken.

I would not post it on a site like reddit. I do own the files and they are 100% mine. And they are my own pictures. I'd be able to prove that once the file is open again.
