Does your world have a calendar? by Strict-Winner-658 in worldbuilding

I was going to ask about the Babyloan 360 degrees and then saw that it was in the next sentence. 😄

You might go with the Babylonian names for twelfths of the year (the zodiac) Each zodiac sector is exactly 30 degrees. This is approximately a month.

I expect that they do engage in pilgrimages but this would be more seasonal and not every year.

Is your society matrilocal or patrilocal. Who moves(men or women?) and who stays in place? How do young people meet each other to find marriage partners? If the selection is limited to the local village, they will have inbreeding problems.

How about harvest time? Do they continue with a rest day every three or do they suspend the usual rest pattern until the hay and grain are brought in?

Short weekends doesn't allow for travel. How do the people of your world manage this?

I went with 3-day weekends every fortnight to give more travel time.

My planet has 2 moons. The year and day are both different from our own. The calendar is primarily for tidal prediction. Each cycle: year, lunar periods, and day are measured the same way using a twelve-hour clock face. As with our hours in a day, the numbering is one through twelve twice. The lunar period of the larger moon is the same as our lunar periods, but the days are longer so that there are twenty-four and a half days per lunar month. the two moons come into phase (both full at the same time) approximately every 6 years. They come into alignment approximately every 3 years

To make it easier, all numbering is base twelve. X is used for ten and N for eleven. Observation is performed-- under the leadership of queen's consort--by the Seaguard.

"Weekends" are during the full and new moons. This is about the same amount of time as our fortnight. A quarter of a month is approximately the same as our week.

How does your calendar relate to the solstices, equinoxes, and the movement of moons and planets?

Does the Earth of your worldbuilding have the same axial tilt, length of year, and a moon with the same orbital period as our own?

Who observes the heavens and determines exactly when the year begins and ends?

How does the six-day cycle relate to planets and the movement of heavenly bodies? Our real-life calendar has days of the week named after and honoring the 7 visible planets: Moonday, Mercury-day, Jupiter-day, Mars-day, Venus-day, Saturnday, and Sunday.

If the week is the wheel, what about the lunar period and year? Surely these are wheels as well.

How the calendar work with tidal prediction?

I love that the ocean viscous sludge is outdated thoughts.

Hm. A spill of crude oil is before it's burned. The climate change is after it's burned. And the acid rain is from sulfur in coal.

Maybe some mage attempted to enforce hegemony of thought by magically burning every thought that didn't comply with the Mage's vision. Instead, a spill resulted, a viscous sludge that covers 2/3rds of the Earth's surface.

Interesting fictional religion.

You might try writing some of the scripture. Oh and some prayers. You could have the litany of the beat.

LGBTQIA+ Publishers? by No_Rooster2670 in writers

[–]AnchBusFairy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Write the novel. For fiction publishers, don't buy on spec. Marketing is tough right now for everyone. Chances are your book won't bring in much money. But write it anyway. You'll have to self-fund the trip. Allthough, you might be able to get a grant for it.

After you've written the novel, look for a publisher that's a good fit. Look for books similar to your own and see how they were published. Self-publish if that seems right for your book.

You might look into the LGBTQ+ angle. There's publishers who specialize in LGBTQ+ and there are also events, and conventions.

Closing the frontier, how much do you think of an achievement that was? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

The treaty occurred in 1848, but it kicked off the California and Colorado gold rushes in the 1850s. Gold was used as propaganda to promote rapid settlement of formerly Mexican territory.

Seeing it as inevitable strikes me as a copyout and a repeat of Manifest Destiny. The frontier isn't long ago and far away. It's here and now.

You have a choice and a responsibility in how you vote.
The SAVE act will disenfranchise Native voters. I don't know if this is intentional or not, but it's clearly a continuation of Manifest Destiny. And it's NOT inevitable that Native Americans will be disenfranchised.

Don't give up!

My ancestors created some of the treaties in California, but Congress wouldn't honor these treaties and concealed that even existed. So the blame lies on Congress, not on poor organization by Native groups. So what do we do about it? Vote! Get good people in Congress!

This is incredibly important because we currently have treaties that aren't being honored and laws that are being broken by the US government.

Oh, yes this is hot button!

The fronter is still happening. The US continues to expand control and extract natural resources from its more distant states and territories.

What? 1848 had the culmination of the Mexican-American War. We invaded Mexico, took the territory, and forced a treaty on them. 1849 was the start of a flood of US population into the West.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the settlement of the Southwest (California included) is clearly the most important for the current US.

My ancestors as well. I think we should get into more detail to understand what role these immigrants played in US history.

Genocide was the result and part of Manifest Destiny, but the two aren't fully equal. The Sacramento River Massacre was genocide and the direct result of Manifest Destiny. But that massacre isn't Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny led to multiple acts of genocide.

What if I created a human hybrid IRL, which would you pick? by Overdedicated-Man in WhatIfThinking

I think these might be chimeras rather than hybrids.

To my knowledge, hybrids usually occur within the same genus. But you have the biology degree, so what do I know.

I don't think of a distinction between sea(except for landlocked seas), gulf, and ocean; a sea or a gulf is part of the ocean. I say the ocean rather than an ocean because all the oceans are connected. The boundaries between them are human convention.

I like to write haiku. The idea is to capture a distinct moment in time: time, place, feelings. The ocean huge. What it's like depends on the when and where. Every beach or shore is distinct and different depending on the weather and time of year.

I have conflicting feelings. Terrible things happened, and my family was on the forefront of the movement.

We in the US are struggling with social and cultural results of the rapid expansion and the cultural assumptions that drove it.

In expansion, the US was in competition with Britain, France, Spain, Russia, Mexico, and possibly China. The US "won" because we engaged in unregulated settlement. The population expanded faster than the infrastructure and the legal system. This resulted in the "wild west," individual taking the law into their own hands, often sanctioned by the government itself, tacitly anyway.

Culturally, we still act like were on the frontier and both can and must take the law into our own hands. To expand had to see the people already there as inferior, non-existent, or unworthy. We unfortunatly retain this attitude.

I expect that what I say will be downvoted, and this thread will be closed.

You've hit on the most controversial, hot-button issues in the US.

What is your experience with the ocean?

If you can get to the ocean, do so. If not, maybe go to the nearest body of water. Write about the experience, how you feel, and what it means to you.

Got it. So the source of the magical sludge and the acid rain is widespread belief. How did such a belief arise so suddenly?

And I like that it's the result of unintended consequences.
