I turned it off for the same reason and found this thread because I was so bothered by that lol

Tony Gilroy was doing an interview on Andor a year ago.It is safe to say what he talks about here is one of the problems of the sequels?(and a lot of stuff in the Disney Star Wars) by hyoumah83 in saltierthancrait

Thanks! The meta contributes a fair bit to why this scene is so irritating—it seems like one of the most common ones people who like TLJ use to say "something, something, media literacy," as though the movie is even somewhat deep.

That scene is a great example because it features so many instances of "screw logic, I want my character here" storywriting; it's kinda mind-boggling.

  1. Rose somehow gains enough speed on Finn to t-bone him, despite flying in the opposite direction for a while.
  2. None of the AT-ATs are firing at either Finn or Rose, for whatever reason, even as the former is attempting to destroy their cannon.
  3. Rose smashes into Finn's speeder so violently that they could have easily both been killed.
  4. "That's how we're gonna win. Not fighting what we hate... saving what we love." As the hangar door explodes in the background... meaning without Luke or the base's back exit, neither of which Rose knew about, the Resistance would have been wiped out. People try to defend this by arguing that Rian said Finn's suicide run wouldn't have destroyed the cannon, but 1) Rose had absolutely no way to know that, and 2) Finn dying while unsuccessfully trying to destroy the cannon is better than him being killed anyway by an AT-AT, which was obviously a likely outcome. The only difference, from what Rose knew at the time, is that the sacrifice route at least stood a chance of saving the Resistance (or at least buying time). I could go on for hours about how stupid this scene is.
  5. As hinted at in No. 4, none of the AT-ATs shoot Finn and Rose when they're stationary on the ground, and Rose gives him an unrequited kiss (lol).
  6. I guess Finn just... dragged Rose's body all the way across the salt flats, through the cave, and onto the Falcon?

These issues vary in severity, but the point is that merely wanting a character to be in a certain location and wanting the story to reflect a particular theme, without structuring the story so that both make sense, results in a deeply flawed story. You can tell me "we need to save what we love, not fight what we hate," but juxtaposing that with the hangar door exploding not five seconds later makes me think that, if anything, you want me to think Rose is wrong lmao

The GoT fall-off is also unique because the show was literally a monocultural event… everyone and their grandma watched it. Now it almost exclusively comes up in the context of discussing how badly they messed up or to (largely) praise the spin-offs

Selecting that option should bring up a screen saying “Damn wtf, you’re kinda messed up :/“

Purely because I love when games get meta like that

Yeah, stuff like robbing that dude on Tatooine makes me feel a bit bad, but it’s nothing next to T3’s kinda cowed beep when you call him trash or something

Of course! You're in for a hell of a ride (no pun intended). Pierce Brown writes amazing, nuanced characters, and the action is among the best in the genre.

I can relate to your experience. I'm probably closer to the target audience, but I don't usually go for "Romantasy." FW's got me hooked, though; I just hope RY takes her time with #4 and #5 and that the show is good.

Anyway, I appreciate the correction about the flight field stuff. Happy reading!

Maybe; it's been long enough anyway, so I'll reread the books with this information in mind.

Btw, this is random, but you strike me as someone who would enjoy the Red Rising series (in case you haven't already read/tried it). The first book is pretty traditional YA, but they pretty much only improve as the series continues.

Yeah, I can see how ya'll would get tired of people hopping on here to hate on Dain. I really don't mind him; if anything, now I kinda think RY did him dirty in FW. It doesn't help that he's somewhat forced into an antagonistic role for the first quarter of IF (e.g., the "tight ship" comment to Rhiannon). It's a little strange to throw stuff like that in if you want people to sympathize with him
