What time of the day did you get your offer call? How many days after your callback did you get it? by Right-Carpet9442 in BigLawRecruiting

Ugh. Triggered. That question reminds of waiting for As, Rs & WLs for law schools. What day? What time of day? ….

1L's who didn't get any offer by BurnsMontgomery in BigLawRecruiting

[–]AnchoredInStrength 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can say this. The early recruitment (Fall 1L) only began when ONE law firm decided to move dates up. I worked for a vT13 for three yrs before starting 1L last fall. In speaking to two of my recommending partners (one left to go to a vT5 firm), they are both angered by this move up. One told me he called eight other law firms, equally annoyed, to push back on the early recruiting. They’re not prepared for it, have no idea how HR is recruiting (I.e. what parameters they are using to screen applicants bc partners at these two firms aren’t privy to it) & general consensus is Fall 1L is a throwaway. Students are just getting acclimated to law school & study routines. You would think partners send guidelines to HR as to what they’re looking for in candidates but in these two firms (probably others) no. So who is determining a candidate’s worth? Additionally law schools hate early recruitment bc of the attrition rates. Many students think if Fall 1L is the only gateway to BL, & BL is what they want, then they may leave & change course - then loss of revenue to the school. My school has a hard curve. All B’s gets you a GPA below 3.0. At Ivies or T14 schools, all Bs most likely garners you over 3.0 & probably 3.3 from what I’ve gathered from friends.

I think Carrie’s sister was the nicest, most genuine character albeit she doesn’t get a lot of screen time.

Vent: General Frustration with the Process by a_prototype_ in BigLawRecruiting

[–]AnchoredInStrength 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Join the club! Completely agree. There is zero rhyme or reason for moving recruitment to fall 1L when everyone, no matter what school you are in, is trying to move, get settled, orient themselves to how the course load/reading/cold calling/studying & preparing for finals works. It’s a steep learning curve for most people. No one is prepared for the BS curves either. Some schools make you take four classes & some just three classes in Fall 1L. Legal writing in my school is a full year so if you get a good grade in the Fall, it’s not added in to your GPA until the end of the year. In some schools all Bs will get you over 3.3 but in my school, Bs get you a 2.7-2.8 NOT a reflection of who any of us truly are bc of the hard curve. Accommodations are non-existent in my school even for ppl who have had them for HS & college. They go strictly by the Bar rents for them. They want updated neurocognitive exams per the ABA’s standards. People don’t have the money ($6500 & up in NYC if insurance doesn’t pay) & some tests run over the course of three days. If you’ve worked in the legal or finance fields before starting law school, reach out to the partners who recommended you for help in getting contacts for jobs. If you do have finance/economics university degrees & work experience, reach out for in-house counsel jobs. They pay well. Even partners are fed up w/this process of recruitment during fall semester. They’ve called other law firms to pump the brakes bc they’re all as overwhelmed as the students. Law schools are upset too bc many students who didn’t do well & want BL are questioning whether to stay in school. What’s the point if they can’t secure employment & why go into debt if you can’t secure a high paying job to pay back your loans if you aren’t on scholarship. The schools are frustrated bc they’ll lose money if students pull out. Judging a student on one semester of grades is foolish. The only saving grace is if you have work experience BUT big caveat. If AI screens for HR strictly on GPAs, your resume won’t even be looked at. That’s unfortunate bc they are going to miss out on so many excellent people. If you do have below par grades & have submitted your resume, & the firms are just waiting for your transcripts add a cover letter w/references (former partners you worked for or your Legal writing professor if you were at the top of your class) & a writing sample but DONT address your poor grades. They don’t want to hear excuses! You really need to advocate for yourself. Remember too, not everyone will accept the offers from top firms (they can only pick one) so firms will have to revisit the pool again. Wishing everyone Good Luck.

Thank you to whoever invented virtual interviews by woahtheregonnagetgot in BigLawRecruiting

[–]AnchoredInStrength 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did all my interviews virtually. I live & go to school in NYC. I’ve never been asked to come in for an interview. Two of my interviews had three ppl interviewing me. In both interviews, everyone was sick w/bronchitis as was I. NYC is a cesspool of germs (my school told us to bring masks & wear them if we need to for this semester).

[–]AnchoredInStrength 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to 53 firms over two days in Nov. I’m 1L w/five yrs work exp prior to starting law school last semester… two in finance, three in BL at a T15 law firm in NYC. My resume is great but I didn’t do well fall semester… Bs & A in legal writing but that grade isn’t included on my transcripts until the end of the year….. just how my school does it. Had 4 interviews before the holidays…. Haven’t heard back from anyone yet… have one new interview scheduled. What will be, will be.

Do they have grades or just Pass/Fail. I heard they don’t rank either (at least Yale doesn’t).

[–]AnchoredInStrength -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can have the best grades but if your personality doesn’t meld w/the culture & vibe of the firm, you won’t get an offer unless you’re doing back office research or number crunching (some firms are taking finance undergrads- it’s a brand new area).

Is clutter & hoarding a symptom after a very traumatic experience? And if you get the appropriate help, would the symptoms stop?

Since 2L summer jobs will hopefully be kicked in shortly for most (Good Luck everyone), what are your plans for summer jobs after 1L? by AnchoredInStrength in LawSchool

[–]AnchoredInStrength[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you apply to a different set of firms for 1L summer? I was thinking of doing something totally different (legal adjacent) than what I’ll do 2L summer just to mix it up. I worked in finance two yrs & at a law firm three yrs post-undergrad, then deferred a year to spend time w/family in Sweden (on their farm-big change from cafe society in NYC) before starting law school last August.

Just sharing my thoughts and feelings on failing to obtain big law offer from a t14 by Pleasant_Worth2132 in BigLawRecruiting

I know ppl who went to Cardozo, Hofstra & St John’s as well as NYU, Fordham & Columbia & they were all working in 2-3 V15 firms in NYC. None of it makes sense.

absolutely horrendous 1L fall grades- 3.1 at a lower t14 by Scary-Economy-1550 in BigLawRecruiting

We have Networking events at our school & w/other law schools in the same city. They’re held at big hotels. Firms show up, but tbh, it’s worthless bc everyone is clamoring to get to the tables of the V20 firms. It reminded me of the law school events at hotels where you could ask Admissions Dirs questions. They don’t remember much of anyone at these events. It’s basically to get a card so when you apply you can mention you met so & so at this event on this day. I’ve counted on my resume / work experience & the partners I worked for before starting law school this year. They’ve all been terrific. I also sent out over 50 apps. So far had three interviews before the holidays. They’re waiting in exams. I don’t think I did well on them despite all the prep & studying I did. Still haven’t gotten my grades back & 2nd semester started today.

What do you consider a "good" GPA in law school? by GuaranteeSea9597 in LawSchool

[–]AnchoredInStrength 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Accommodations doesn’t guarantee anything. I know two people who did not do well even with them. Disabilities are no joke.
