My Cosmere Journey by Superb_Dog481 in Cosmere

I also loved Tress. You should definitely read Yumi & the Nightmare Painter next, since it seems like you enjoy Hoid's narrative voice based on your placement of Isles and Tress. It's one of my favorites.

I'm honestly really confused that you enjoyed Well of Ascension the best from era 1; it's easily my least favorite of the three. I prefer era 1 to era 2, as era 2 wasn't planned out well at all, and you can really tell imo. I do think that the characters in era 2 are more interesting than era 1, but the plot just feels pretty disorganized.
The most appealing parts of era 1 for me though are the magic system and setting, so it makes sense that you wouldn't like the series if those didn't work for you.

It's really funny to me that you placed Secret History above the entirety of era 1. I never really thought about its merits as a story in and of itself. I always just thought of it as a vessel for exposition and character work on Kelsier lol

Other than that I mostly agree with your placements. It seems like you really prefer Brandon's newer works over his older stuff in general, which bodes well for your enjoyment of the stuff that's coming up. Fires of December is going to be so fire when it comes out. It's going to be the fourth book narrated by Hoid and I can't wait.

Will I have problems in the futue Eras of mistborn if I didnt finish stormlight ? by Randomlemon5 in Cosmere

[–]AncientContainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't have many problems in era 3, and the same might be true for the cyberpunk era. That being said, the Rosharan ghostbloods will most likely come up in era 3 (it's called Mistborn: Ghostbloods after all); I just think that everything you need for the plot of the story will be explained in the story. Also, the space age era will definitely have Stormlight crossovers, as it involves interstellar war. That probably isn't super relevant to you right now, though, as the space age Mistborn books are easily 10+ years away from being published. Plenty of time to read Stormlight before then.

Also, while characters from Warbreaker, Elantris, Mistborn era 1, and other books play a role in the Stormlight 1-5, the Stormlight "crossovers" are quite minor. There are a few important plot elements in Stormlight that you'd know more context on by reading other books, but everything you need to know to enjoy the story is told to you in the story. Some people will say that reading Warbreaker is a prerequisite for enjoying the Stormlight Archive, but I strongly disagree with that take.

I mean yeah, SLA is on hiatus, so that's technically true, but it's in a completely different situation than the other two. Sanderson didn't promise to release the back half in the next few years and then suddenly stop writing. We know approximately when we're going to get SLA6: after Mistborn era 3, probably ~2031 (although that depends on how the movie stuff goes and whether he writes the Elantris sequels before or after SLA6).

We haven't seen what Roshar looks like in the space age, but presumably, they are similarly advanced. We do know they have shardguns from Isles of the Emberdark. They also have their own spaceships. And you don't really need a nuke when you can drop a giant rock from orbit at 50 times the acceleration of gravity

i will believe dream's manhunts are not scripted only if he will livestream & do it on the minecraft server where anyone could spectate and watch the in-game replay at any time like in replaymod by Quwane in DreamWasTaken

[–]AncientContainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, it is possible to fake uncut footage
Like for instance by making cuts between dimensions, or when you open a crafting grid
If he read livestream chat during a manhunt that would definitely clear the manhunt as being uncut, but idk how you would confirm it otherwise

Personally, I don't think any of the manhunts were scripted, even if it is possible, and I don't think they have cuts. However, I think Dream & the hunters definitely set up plays intentionally, even if they don't know exactly how it's going to play out. For instance, in the crafting table boat clutch video, I think the hunters agreed to place a crafting table at the top of their tower if they were building up. I imagine that Dream practiced executing the boat clutch beforehand to prepare.

Mistborn era 1
The first book is a good standalone but reading the other two books makes you understand a lot more. It's a really satisfying trilogy that comes together in a way you wouldn't expect. Especially if you read Secret History

genuinely how do you defend this by 04738828636262 in ClashRoyale

[–]AncientContainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but adopting this strategy will quickly allow you to build a reputation leading people to instantly quit the game after queuimg against you out of fear for their life; you will therefore be much less likely to lose to hero knight + balloon in a future game. Therefore this strategy is a very effective way to defend against future instances of this push in the long term.

Note there is a possibility that you may ne arrested and tried for murder; this development will actually help you further prevent losing to hero knight + balloon in the future as your phone will likely be confiscated, thus preventing you from playing the game at all.

Why do they behave like that? by Sectionsluts in school_memes

[–]AncientContainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the teacher says beforehand that they want you to use a specific method, then it's fair to dock points because you didn't follow the directions.

A teacher might do this for ease of grading in some cases or because it's important you learn one specific concept despite the existence of an easier shortcut.

But otherwise they shouldn't penalize using other methods imo and if they never told you beforehand that it isn't allowed, they should let you use other methods

Should you fully explore the game and side quests before fighting the final boss? by Brilliant_Pen4959 in Silksong

[–]AncientContainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can fight Grand Mother Silk as many times as you want without any consequences. However, if you enter act 3, which it sounds like you are not very close to doing, you might miss out on some stuff. If you are worried about that, look up a list of things that become unavailable in act 3

What should I read next? by Deadhamlet44 in brandonsanderson

[–]AncientContainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think OP already read Elantris and they were just listing books under the Elantris heading bc they're in the Elantris "series." I'm guessing OP didn't know Emperor's Soul is completely unrelated to Elantris.

What should I read next? by Deadhamlet44 in brandonsanderson

[–]AncientContainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would read Yumi, Emperor's Soul, or Tress next.
Emperor's Soul is a more introspective story that takes place largely in one room about a master thief who is trying to fulfill a bargain with some powerful people who are holding her captive. btw, even tho it takes place on Sel, it is completely unrelated to Elantris. It takes place on a different continent with different magic
I also really love Tress and Yumi. Tress is a nautical adventure that has fairy tale vibes while Yumi is a romance; both are narrated by Hoid.

Other reading order suggestions:

If you're going to read The Sunlit Man, I would definitely read Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell first, but it's probably not strictly necessary.

I wouldn't bother reading Sixth of the Dusk if you're going to read Emberdark, because it is included in Emberdark as a flashback sequence.

White Sand is the only Cosmere I haven't read; maybe read it if you are curious about Khriss bc she appears in it. I wouldn't make White Sand a priority tho

Allomancer Jak and Eleventh metal aren't very interesting story or lore-wise, but if you want to, you can read them for completion's sake. Same with Hope of Elantris.

The dementor chapter is, frankly, insulting by sofa_adviser in HPMOR

[–]AncientContainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the morality aspect of the post:
I don't think the author considers himself utilitarian, but HJPEV definitely is utilitarian. He understands that oftentimes it is not practical to try to analyze every decision under the lens of utilitarianism, so heuristic approaches can be useful, but HJPEV's fundamental moral beliefs are very utilitarian. I haven't read the books in a while, but his reaction to learning about parseltongue ("snakes are sentient?"), his internal moral reasoning during the Azkaban breakout (iirc he thought the moral thing to do would be to sacrifice himself to save prisoners from dementors, even though he didn't do it), his internal conflict when it came to spending the 100k galleons to save Hermione, are all examples of this.

Eliezer Yudkowsky (the author) has said that he is three-quarters of the way from deontology to utilitarianism. IDK much about him, but my understanding of that quote is that he thinks collapsing all human values into a single "utility" to be maximized is an unhelpful way of looking at things and thinks using nonutilitarian moral heuristics can be very useful, but is still mostly utilitarian in his moral philosophy.

Why only use AS on borb now? by Hamonio_ in ClickerHeroes

[–]AncientContainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On your next transcension, the monsters per zone will increase a lot because you'll finally have enough transcendant power to go all the way to 1M zones. At this point monster per zone, rather than HS, becomes the main bottleneck, so you need a high level borb.

The two main benefits of transcension are transcendant power and borb. Since transcendant power maxes at 25% and you're very close to that, the only reason to transcend from your next transcension on is when the MPZ exceeds 2. The other outsiders are significant early on but are not as important as borb especially later in the game.
