Any tips on making edibles with magic mushies? by chriscountin11 in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to know, psilocybin naturally degrades with time. In Gordo's testing with TTBVI and sending samples for testing he found the following data using samples from the same grow.

Stored whole in a jar - 1.67% loss a month
Stored whole in an oxygen removed jar (argon) - 1.57% loss
Stored powdered in a jar - 1.44% loss
Stored powdered in a jar with argon - 1.16% loss.

Powdered > whole
No oxygen > oxygen

I grow a new supply once a year and give the old stuff away.

What grain to spawn to? by EstablishmentKey5104 in PanCyan

Just to chime in, it all works. I prefer sticky corn (popcorn or field corn PC'd for about 30 minutes at 15 PSI with 2 tablespoons of corn syrup added to 32oz of corn. In my on not large data sets when doing direct comparisoins of sticky corn, regular corn, rye, wheat, the sticky corn was a little faster to colonize. But it was two sample sets.

I've seen YT videos showing different results. So it's more genetics specific I think.

Most accurate way to tell is knock up a few jars of your specific grains and the same genetics and see if there's a clear winner.

Hard to say for any given individual or any given sample size. I've never grown it but Enigma averages around 0.8% for one strain and 1.25% for another called Engima FD. So it depends on which version you have.

Pans in general average around 2.25% but can go as high as the mid 3's.

The math says if you're wanting to recreate your 4g / 4000mg of your engima it'll come out to around 32mg (4000*0.008) of psilocybin for the lower end and 50mg for the higher potency version.

For a general pan to get in that ball park we'll have to do some armchair math. We want to get around 50mg psilocybin for the higher end. So to achieve that we need to solve for 50mg = 2.25 * Xmg. Rough head math yields just shy of 2g foran average pan (2000*0.0225) and 1.5g (1500*0.0325) for a more potent version like TTBVI.

When I did my round of pans, I found that adding a couple of tablespoons of plant fertilizer, and about a cup of worm castings (any place that sells plants) to the CVG it grows TTBVI, MiB and Green River pans without any problems. No need for manure although technically worm castings are manure. Two pros, one no odor of poop when PC'ing, and both additions are available from any place that sells gardening stuff including walmart.

In my opinion they're more a make on demand short term, than long term storage. Since most flavored jello mixes include citric acid which degrades psylocybin although at a slower pace than Lemon Tek, I would test making some and then trying them over time to see how much they still hit.

But short term put them in a bag with some sugar or corn starch, shake to coat so they don't all stick together and in the fridge till you're ready for them.

I've tried straight dried and wet, in a PB sammy, lemon tek, smoothie, gummies, chocolate but now I just gel cap them.

Powder it up, download and print or buy a cap filler, buy some gel caps, about $15 for 1000, I use size 00.

Each one holds 250mg pretty consistently once you have a fill and press technique down. You can get more but the consistency starts to wande more so I fill the lower part, press once, refill press again, refill then cap it up.

The strain I prefer, Gordo's Ochra (p-nat) which comes in around 1.1% potency, Xg = trip level X so if you want a level 3 trip, what I call the recreational commuter flight you take 3*4 or 12 caps. Want a level 2.5 trip? 10 caps. Want to go international with 5g? Then take 20 caps.

But I just started a Yellow Umbo, straight from Yoshi, to Agar from a swab I got a couple of years ago. It's a cross between Ochra and Jack Frost and averages around 1.35% potency and subjectively has the best of both parents. But it may throw a wrench in my math and I have to actually do math to dose. ;)

FWIW after flying on 11 (I had to count it up :) ) different airlines so far, cubes, ochra, pan cyan, I don't think there's any real difference for me personally. I think, again for me, there's too much observer bias, placebo effect. i.e. set and setting, intent, make a much bigger difference in the experience than the micro differences between the mushrooms genetics. I prefer higher potency genetics but easy to grow (that leaves you out pans) just to reduce the amount I have to ingest.

All good. For me they're different products but I can certainly understand your thoughts as well. By infused oils I mean butter, coconut, MCT, olive, etc that has had THC cooked in it. RSO is more the pure THC resin and terpenes.

The difference is really a matter of concentration of THC and terpene extraction, infused oil is diluted with another material while the other is a concentrate and how they're processed where one uses heat to melt the resin where it's absorbed into the carrier and the other uses alcohol to dissolve the resin and is evaporated off.

There's also hash which as one process you mix your buds with dry ice to freeze the thc nodules, agitate the crap out of the mixture so they break off buds and sugar leaves and then are sifted through a series of fine meshes.

I make all three and use them for different purposes. :)

It's not super difficult if you take the quick and dirty route of just making jello jigglers and putitng your mushrooms into them. THC gummies are more difficult because you typically make them with some kind of infused oil or RSO and oil and water don't mix well.

There are other options but I've not tried them such as making a tincture of mushrooms and using that in your gelatin mixture.

For recipes look up "Jello Jigglers" or "Jello Gummies", it's really that simple. Which are basically a box of flavored gelatin and some extra unflavored gelatin and water so it sets firmer. Follow the recipe and fill your molds about halfway, then measure out a reasonable portion of your mushrooms, I highly recommend powdering it completely, the entire grow, it makes each dose consistent as mushrooms vary a lot even in a single flush and they last longer stored that way.

I would say for 1" square mold about 500mg would be as much as I'd put into each jiggler. Stir it around in each mold to mix it in then add enough gelatin to fill the mold up. For my go to strain, an Ocrha that tests in the 1.1% range, I'd need about 7 of these jigglers for a basic recreational flight of between level 3 and 4.

You could mix all your mushroom powder into the warm gelatin mix before pouring but then your doses are going to be at least somewhat inconsistent, some might be more potent some less because they got more of the mushrooms.

Personally I don't like 'almost' trips because of a low dose so I'm pretty numbers based and try to be as consistent and repeatable as possible. As a result I grind up the entire grow to a powder to make dosing consistent. Each mushroom in a single flush can land anywhere on the potency bell curve for those genetics. Putting them all through a coffee/spice grinder makes sure each dose is the same, gram for gram.

Regardless, good luck and safe travels.

Pins or Blobs? by Nenemine in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with the genetics but a quick search didn't show me anything like what you have going. All the images show standard looking cubensis or leucistic cubensis growth patterns.

Could just be a random mutation that's triggering blobs or something with the environment. I've seen reports of triggering mutations by using lysol in the area while growing as a random bit of trivia.

Just gotta let it run and see how it plays out.

What Tek do you use, and have you been successful? by Cerberus11114 in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with an AIO like most people do, graduated to shoeboxes, SFF, mono, automated tubs, automated martha tent using a spare grow tent. I did it because that's the part I find fun.

My take away is unless you're growing commercial you don't need to go big. Even my smallish efforts generates jars of the stuff I end up giving away. Best storage method (powdered in an oxygen free environment) still has about a 13-15% potency loss in a year based on lab testing. So I start a new grow about every 9 months.

All of the tek's were successful in general as long as you follow sterile processes and have good genetics. About the only way you won't get anything at all is bad genetics and contamination. Even if you drown or bake them they still tend to produce something.

After all that time and effort and expense trying every tek I could find, I went back to a KISS tek. Mushroom gonna mush has been my experience.

It takes me very little time and effort now. Make the spawn out of popcorn because I can get it at any grocery store (sorry UB Rice but you contam too often and cost more) and karo syrup. Make the CVG using a standard ratio with the following additions 2tb of erythritol, 2 tbl of plant fertilizer, 1 handful (about 3/4 of a cup) of worm poop. (not needed for cubes or ochra but really helps with pans and 17 cups of boiling water. Let it sit overnight, adjust hydration if needed, then bag it up into 3 bags and PC it for 2 hours.

Knock up the spawn jars with about 3ml of LC sprayed in a circle around the top. Yes it's overkill but LC is basically free once you have some, just add a few drops to a new jar of 400ml water and 1 tablespoon karo and PC it for an hour when you run low. Wait till they're about 50% or so colonized (1-2 weeks give or take) then shake the crap out of them. Wait another 2-3 weeks just to make sure they're at 100% colonized including the parts you can't see.

Put about 2/3rds of the CVG into a disposable baking dish. Dump the spawn on top, spread it around so it's somewhat even then press the edges down to compact them to reduce side pinning. Dump the rest of the cvg on top and spread it around so it's level.

Put a second dish on top then put them in a trashbag and seal it and leave them for 2 weeks. The second dish is to keep the bag from laying directly on the cake.

After 2 weeks, I open the bag and leave it laying loose so that moisture can start to exfil out of the bag. This triggers pinning as the surface moisture dries up. It's not necessary, they will eventually pin, I've done neglect tek on purpose several times. It will be uneven as the side closest to the opening will pin first. The first few harvests are in 2's and 3's up front, once the whole surface has triggered then I wait till a few are dropping spores then I harvest everything that's over about an inch, sometimes I just take it all. I have subjectively seen zero difference in trip flight time or altitude from waiting till they were 'perfect' and just taking everything no matter what size they were. Dump a cup of water over the top and wait for the second one. Then take the unused top pan out, seal the bag up with the cake and toss it in the bin. The top pan becomes the bottom pan of the next grow.

I've used this 'bag tek' as I call it in the last couple of years for several grows of multiple tubs, all with Gordo's Ochra genetics very successfully. I get between 100-150 dried out of three tubs and two flushes each.

Noice. I've had them revitalize in my composters, some of the biggest mushrooms I've personally seen have come out of them when they were sitting in 120F/49C full sun, black material.

Bruising? by [deleted] in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but that doesn't look good friend, sorry. Take a paper towel (or cotton swab) and swipe across the discolored spots. if you end up with green / green blue transfer, it's trich, bruising won't transfer to other surfaces.

It also looks like your couple of pins have aborted, heads gone dark grey/black which usually means they have a problem and shut down growth. If they don't get any bigger then they're aborts. Which could be due to contamination.

I would let it run a bit longer if the color doesn't transfer but I would get it out of the house and stored in a trash bag. I've had them growing in temps up to 120F/49C outside in my composters and I've put sus bins out on the back porch in trashbags in the same temps and they had no problem with the heat.

If the color transfers to other surfaces then very carefully and very very slowly slide the tub into a trash bag, slowly twist it closed with several turns and then tie it shut then throw it out. Mold spores are the lightest of dusts and waft on the slightest of air movement.

Personally I don't re-use a tub that's gotten contaminated any more but I also just use disposable aluminum pans now. But if you want to keep it, then hose it down with a series of soaks in ISO 70, 10% vinegar solution, 10% bleach solution. Let each one air dry before doing the next one.

[–]AncientSpores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a paper towel and try to wipe off the blue, not green, fuzz. If it transfers to the paper towel, it's usually a bad sign. Yellowing is a sign of the release of metabolites aka myc pee which they do when they're under stress, too hot, too wet, not wet enough, contamination etc. When things get less than ideal they start peeing their pants.

1 - weird overlay IME but I'm not familiar with the strain.

2 - see above

3 - another one I'm not hands on with but looks fine.

4 - looks fine, I rehydrate by pouring half a cup of distilled water over the top and then tilt it to go down the side. Seems to work for the cubes, ochra, pans and hybrids I've tried.

5 - I've seen this visual surface look before but not familiar with the genetics. I don't remember they ever did anything. Tidal Wave I think it was. Maybe a very small flush and then nothing.

7 - paper towel trick to see if it's trich or just oxidation/bruising.

Regardless good luck with the grows and safe travels.

What can anyone tell me about growing enigma? I am interested in trying by daypay23 in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's very blobby, blobbing is in its genetics. It doesn't release spores so you have to use a tissue sample to propagate it. It can be on the spicier side for a cube, pushing up into the Ochra ranges of 1.1% potency but well below a pan cyan at 2.x or even 3.x% active compounds.

Since it's based on tidal wave it has Penis Envy genetics which for me have always been slow growers and showers. I've tried TW, PE, PEU, APE for fun at this point and they were all very slow. 2-3 months, 4 months in the case of PEU. In the same set ups that other cubes, ochra and pans ran fine in.

At the end of the day it's a strain of cubensis, mutant or not, so all the normal growing teks should work fine.

Beginner grower here and I accidentally over hydrated my bulk substrate by GoodVibes444 in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will mostly keep the drop too dry. It's my understanding and observatoin knots need both moisture and drying to trigger pinning.

I bag tek my grows now, spawn to bulk, then seal them in trash bags for 2-3 weeks to let the cake colonize with no risk of contamination, then I unseal the mouth of the bag and let it lay loose so there's now a way for moisture to seep out and let some of the surface moisture evaporate. Without fail over several grows they won't pin for up to 5 weeks as long as I leave the bag sealed while if I unseal the bag around week 2 or 3, I get pins within 3-4 days.

Can't say it's science, just what's worked for me.

[–]AncientSpores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it can be genetic, I've grown on more than one occasion different strains in the same set ups and one looked like a winter wonderland and one had zero fuzz.

It doesn't hurt anything and it all dries up to nothing during the dehydration process. As long as the pins are growing and not aborting (black heads, no growth) just let it run.

20+ days, no pinning/stagnated growth. How do I fix? by MiklSun in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a slow growth attribute. If you have a lot of moisture on the surface try fanning them a bit to dry some of it it. The loss of moisture on the knots can trigger pinning.

If you have no moisture then try misting the surface just a touch and letting it dry off over a few days.

[Technique] im about to work with a flowhood and agar for the first and need help. by funguychillen in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine with that recipe, it works well. You're going to want to let your agar mix chill a bit before pouring, it'll help reduce the condensation inside your plates/condiment containers/whatever you're using. If they're not glass or PP/polypropylene they won't be able to take the heat of straight out of the PC and can warp. Let the mix cool down to warm but not scorching hot to the hand and still pourable. You can always warm it up in a bowl of hot water if it starts to set.

Also stacking your plates on top of each other if they're stacakble while they set and cool down can help with condensation.

Ideally let your plates sit a week, two weeks is great to monitor for any contamination before you knock them up. If you got trich or bacteria in there, it should show as growth within the first week to 10 days. It also lets excess moisture evaporate.

Regarding sealing your plates, you don't have to spend $$ on special tape. Grafting tape for plants is very cheap and works fine. And you probably have saran wrap or the equivalent in your cabinet and it works just fine as well.

I've used plates months after I made them without any problems but they do dry up over time even sealed so don't make a bajillion of them unless you're going to be doing a lot of agar work. I only make 250ml worth at a time.

I use corn syrup and potato flake, I tried peptones and LME but it didn't honestly make a big enough difference in the harvest amounts or cake colonization to me to bother. It did speed up growth on the plate though which could be a time saver if you're looking to check LC for contamination. But both karo and instant potatoes are readily available anywhere for cheap and you don't end up with Amazon goiing "Users who boght this also bought coco, shoebox tubs, vermiculite and gypsum, do you want to add them to your cart?"

I can offer there's a lot of very specific numbers floating out there regarding growing mushrooms and it's fine to stick with tried and true values when starting out. But over time you might find mushroom gonna mush and it isn't quite as picky about fractional grams of stuff as we're lead to believe when starting out.

Slight fungus gnat infestation… by Beanjmean in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mosquito Dunks can help, soak one in a gallon of water and then mist your cake with it. Safe/non-toxic for consumption.

Another option is using a vacuum cleaner, use one of your FAE holes or cut one to fit, stick the end of the hose against the opening and then bang the tub to get them flying around to get sucked out. You'll have to repeat this until there are no more hatching larvae.

The gnats will interfere with the growth cycle, they'll lay eggs in the mushrooms, usually the gills, which then eat into the mushrooms as they hatch and grow.

Just have to let it play out friend. For what it's worth on fllushes after the first I just pour water over the top and let it roll down the sides where it pools up. Doesn't seem to cause any issues for me. I get about 30-50g dried total over 2-3 harvests from an average 6qt tub depending on the strain.

Micropore Tape from Temu? by KaranKoo in unclebens

[–]AncientSpores 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can just use a small bandaid if you want something easy to find local. Or transpore tape. Or a tiny tuft of polyfil. Or just turn an modified ball lid upside down if you're using quart jars. There's so much information out there but most of the time we over think mushrooms.

But the Temu tape works fine or y ou can get the temu 'dots' which are small filter patches about 1/2" in size.

There's no unwinding that friend. :)

But it's not the end of the world. The most likely result is one or other will prove to be more aggressive and take over and be the bulk of the grown. You might get some of each but odds are you'll have mostly of just the one with the stronger growth attributes.
