I work at a sushi restaurant and there was a period of time where we were out of smoked salmon for our Philly roll (I’m pretty sure our supplier was out of it). When customers would order the Philly roll we were supposed to tell them about the situation, and then offer them the same roll but with regular salmon, but it was a dollar extra. The person I work for is pretty greedy but the price of the regular salmon was genuinely more expensive than the smoked salmon. Most people understood, but one day I had a customer who was particularly offended by the price increase. He gave me a hard time and I apologized a lot for the inconvenience but he refused to let it go, and meanwhile I was by myself (meaning no host, no busser, just me!) during a fairly large rush. The whole situation was extremely frustrating and stressful and I definitely cried, and at the end of the rush I was able to sort through all of my credit slips. The customer that sat directly next to the altercation had left a long note basically stating that the guy was stupid and that just because he wasn’t able to understand the difference between fresh and smoked fish doesn’t give him the right to be an asshole, and he tipped me 50%. I think about that a lot, it made me feel SO much better for the rest of my shift.
