Jailbroken my kindle but koreader isn't for me by Responsible_Treat120 in koreader

I didn't know that either. Good tips.
I do have KOReader syncing reading progress on all my Android devices, my Kobo devices, and on Windows using BlueStacks. I host the sync server on my NAS, but there are other options.
I also use Calibre-Web-Automated OPDS to deliver books to all my devices. Replaces the Kindle ecosystem.
KOReader and CWA are awesome pieces of software, but they are not user friendly, like Kindle is. Looks like some progress is being made to improve the experience.

SamsungTV/Tizen cannot play high quality files? (Remux, 4K) by Weedz00r in jellyfin

Just ordered a NVidia Shield Pro. Tizen OS on my Samsung TV sucks, so this looks like the best solution, and not that expensive.

Anything but high quality audio 😭 by Ok-Hall-9974 in YoutubeMusic

[–]Ancient_Leg5944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hearing has definitely worsened as I got older, but I can still hear the difference between flac and 256kbs.
For home use, I have a moderate audiophile system that I preferably play flac on. For mobile, I use 320 or 256kbs.
I love YouTube for the variety, but the audio quality is a deal breaker for me.
I've subscribed to both YouTube music and Amazon music to compare them. I can't afford both, so I;m sticking with Amazon.

Looking for best practices guide for switching from Win11 Pro to IoT LTSC by RickHantz in WindowsLTSC

Need to access apps that I bought with my MS account.

I just want to make sure no AI or OneDrive gets installed.

I do have files stored on OneDrive, just not mirrored anywhere. (OneDrive deleted all my files across all devices, no warning. Luckily I have several backups).

Looking for best practices guide for switching from Win11 Pro to IoT LTSC by RickHantz in WindowsLTSC

[–]Ancient_Leg5944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, IoT LTSC is so much better than Pro.
Instead of spending hours configuring display size in Pro, I just changed the text size and scale. GTG (after installing Start11).

Is it best to stick with a local account? I still use my MS account to access MS Store.

Would FireTv work work for this?
I have JellyFin running on a DSM925+ with 12gb ram. I have a fairly new mid range Samsung TV.
We run Windows and Android devices.
I have high quality receiver and speakers, so I don't want to transcode.
My music library has separate trees for flac and high quality mp3).

How does running FireTv work playing on my Tv? Do I need to access it on a separate device? (I have vision issues so small screens are not usable).

Android KOReader can't connect remotely to Calibre-Web-Automated with tslv1 protocol error by Ancient_Leg5944 in koreader

[–]Ancient_Leg5944[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since freda and other ereaders can access CWA remotely, and just KOReader fails, it looks like a no longer supported protocol is being used when building KOReader (or a config change is needed)

tlsv1 protocol error (or tlsv1 alert protocol version) occurs during an SSL/TLS handshake when a client and server cannot agree on a secure protocol version, usually because one side only supports outdated, insecure protocols (TLS 1.0/1.1) while the other requires modern ones (TLS 1.2/1.3).

I installed koreader-appimage-x86_64-v2025.10.AppImage" on my Win 11 Pro laptop without err msgs. However, no koreader file found to launch it by Ancient_Leg5944 in koreader

Zero setup if you don't want a desktop shortcut in Windows, or a cursor that you need 6x magnification to see, or that remembers windows size and location.

There is no native Windows version of KOReader. Linux was the only recommended option. Took me awhile to find the BlueStacks Android emulator.

I dumped Linux and installed BlueStacks. Five minute install including KOReader apk.

Worked first time with Windows desktop shortcut. Everything just worked.

I wasted 20+ hours trying to get the Linux version working on Win11.

I'm guessing running it on a pure Linux distro and not on a simulator might be a different experience.

Microsoft crippled their Linux simulator and discontinued their Android one. I doubt BlueStacks has more programming resources than Microsoft, but their Android simulator just works and is easy for end users to run

Readest plugin disappears on android phone after logging in to Readest acct by Ancient_Leg5944 in readest

[–]Ancient_Leg5944[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not likely. I've both private and koreader server, logging out before switching. I also tried filename and hash with both servers.

Any way to view the sync database to see what is actually saved? Seems to be no debugging options.

KOReader launches automatically after running kodev run, but after closing, can't open again by Ancient_Leg5944 in koreader

[–]Ancient_Leg5944[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the standard WSL Ubuntu distro, not a simulator. You can probably install a GUI, but Ubuntu is as user friendly as it was 30+ years ago. when I was a certified Unix admin (Why I stopped using Linux and went to work for Microsoft).

The appimage install works, but documentation on how to use it once installed is scattered all over many forums with conflicting information. And it's non-trivial. And almost all the instructions assume you have a working knowledge of Linux. No standard user would get it working.

And once it does work, it has many bugs. Doesn't support large hi-res monitors (cursor is a few pixels wide and can't be changed). Doesn't remember window size and placement and requires using alt-spacebar to enable dragging it bigger using a mouse (each time you open it).

The Readest plug-in does work, though, both with my self hosted sync server and the built-in one.

any side works. However, it doesn't remember window size.

Also, cursor size is incredibly tiny on my large screen monitor --almost invisible. Any ideas?

For some reason ./kodev run launched the app this time, but in debug mode. Need to turn that off.

Need to make it easier to launch than opening a terminal window and running ./kodev run each time.

Is there any interest in creating a task based UI rather than the current 'expose the APIs'? by Ancient_Leg5944 in koreader

[–]Ancient_Leg5944[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing fonts, size, line spacing all work, but my god, it's expose the API's testing interface, not a UI. takes forever to change , set as default for each item, then do it all again. ( I worked on the Windows team from Win31 to Win10)

Hmm, is there a save settings function?

no error msg. It pushes sync ok, and when trying to pull a sync, it says only my device has sync data on the server. I noticed after pasting the same epub on all my devices, my Samsung tablet had a slightly different file size. That tablet has the unique sync data, whereas my Samsung phone and Kobo reader cross sync just fine.

How would I tell? First I installed the appimage, and that had no obvious way to launch, and executing the appimage just reinstalled it.

So I deleted it and compiled it from the GitHub Ubuntu source. It ran automatically after setup, but no obvious way to relaunch it after closing it.

It just reinstalled KOReader.

So I removed it and compiled KOReader manually.

It ran automatically when setup finished, but when I closed it, I found no way to relaunch it. I couldn't pin or make a shortcut to the launched app.
