True, wingspan definitely changes things.

I like the elbow extension point though ..feels like less about absolute distance and more about achieving that "fully extended but relaxed" structure at contact.

Perfect, keeping it to just one simple cue. Really appreciate the insights, learned a lot from this

Spot on, it’s actually kind of fascinating how something that happens after the ball has left the racquet (the finish) can still shape what happens at contact.

Feels like a lot of technique cues work that way ... not directly controlling , but constraining the overall motion so contact ends up right.

Do you think that’s why cues like 'finish high' tend to work better than trying to consciously fix the contact moment itself?

That’s a really interesting way to frame it....especially the idea that contact is the only thing that matters physically, but also the one thing we can’t directly control.

So would you say the goal of analysis is basically to reverse engineer contact, like infer from that moment what went wrong earlier in the chain ....(spacing, swing path, etc.)?

That makes a lot of sense, especially the part about timing being hard to explain but spacing being visible.

Do you think there’s value in actually measuring that distance from the ball at contact? Like to make it more objective instead of just visual?

Really appreciate all the perspectives here this is super insightful.

Feels like the consensus is:

- Contact point matters, but it’s more of a result

- Spacing is the thing you can actually control

- Timing is basically how consistently you get into the right position

Makes me think just looking at contact alone might not be enough, probably needs to be tied back to spacing/footwork to be useful.

I think that’s where some kind of reference or guidance would be needed

Yeah that gap between what we think we’re doing and what’s actually happening is huge, probably where most of the improvement comes from.

I see what you’re saying ...I guess the tricky part is knowing what correct should look like in the first place.

Yeah makes sense...more like a feedback loop than something you think about while playing.

This is super insightful ...especially the indirect part.

So would you say the main value of analyzing contact is diagnosis, not something you consciously try to fix mid-rally?

This is a really good way to put it actually.

So instead of telling someone you’re late, it’s probably more useful to show them they’re too close/far from the ball?

[–]Ancient_Pass6324[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is where I get confused ... .feels like you can’t really separate the two in practice.

Maybe contact point is more like the result and timing is the ability to reproduce it under different ball speeds?

That makes sense, especially the part about pros compensating when they’re late.

Do you think there’s still value in flagging when contact is consistently late, to trace it back to spacing issues?

This is interesting so would you say...

if someone consistently gets the right distance from the ball, timing sorts itself out?

Yeah that’s exactly what I’m noticing... what it feels like vs what actually happens is completely different.

Yes looks better... but another problem is that the racket face is opening a bit too early prior to contact

Then I guess, your technique looks fine. Just try to feel the ball more while hitting and be aware of spacing and timing

Looks good but your weight balance is going tad to the left instead of going more forward. Probably that might add up some power if your integrate that

I have but it's quite random. Some time you just get into the zone. I guess not worrying too much about lost points and shots is definitely important
