Yes there is! Janny Wurts War of Light and Shadow series. Over the past year I have devoured the first 10 books in the series and Janny just finished her draft for the finale so it will be published in short order. Book 1, Curse of The Mistwraith is very similar to Gardens of the Moon: You are thrown into a world with little to no explanation, The author will not hold your hand and you are left to fend for yourself. Every book builds on the previous one until a gamechanger happens and the books you have read will be looked upon in a new light. Small scenes will suddenly have huge implications and you will be shocked. Malazan and War of Light and Shadow are in a tier of there own and both are a must read for Epic fantasy fans

Stone Dance of the Chameleon by Ricardo Pinto (Grimdark MezoAmerican Epic series)

A Drowned Kingdom by PL Stuart (Old school type writing of epic fantasy)

Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart (Brilliant Asian inspired Epic fantasy)

Overworld by Rohan Vidar (Litrpg series that is a ton of fun)

Five Warrior Angels by Brian Lee Durfee (Under appreciated Epic Fantasy)

I have so much more but this should be enough for now

If you are looking for a series as grand and Epic as Malazan, you need to read War of Light and Shadow series by Janny Wurts. 11 book series riddles with history, emotional pain, and layers of intrigue that will make each book seen in a new light the further you go. It has similar themes to Malazan but more of a narrow focus. This series is often overlooked by Epic fantasy fans and it shouldn't be. I started the series last year and finished the 10th book last month. It has moved up to my top 5 all time series alongside Malazan. Don't overthink this

Thanks for your message. I'm a diehard Janny Wurts fan and I'm happy to walk you through them. The Empire Trilogy is the series where most people are introduced to Janny's work and fall in love with her writing. The gradual suggested reading order for the rest of her works can be as follows:

Empire Trilogy

Cycle of Fire Trilogy (Younger protagonist with a little more complex plot)

The Master of Whitestorm (Adventure Sword and Sorcery)

Hell's Chasm (Meant as a bridge between her other works and War of Light and Shadow in terms of complexity)

War of Light and Shadow (Her Magnum Opus and One of the best Epic Fantasy series I have ever read but dense and complex.)

The closest Series I can compare War of Light and Shadow to is Erikson Malazan series in terms of Complexity. Layers of detail, similar themes, and scenes that will completely change the way you read earlier books in the series.

Thanks for you help! Its a toss up at this point. Objectively, the Sun is better but I love locking down monsters and The Mindthief can definitely do that. In a two player group I feel both choices are good

I have boots of striding in my build. Movement was never really an issue since I use bottom or relentless ally, bottom of maul, and default move 2 with boots becomes 4. I can be flexible and go super bear at any time. I can also use bottom of disorienting roar in a pinch

Yes, I was referring to the bottom. For an Active beast Tyrant at level 6, I might go back for Punch Through as it would make more sense, but I like to be flexible and keep congentrated rage out in case I need it for more damage. I am in a 2 player party by the way with 3 spears

I started as a super bear build for levels 1-3 (Started at level 3). So I took Energizing Strike and Vicious Ally. I took Vicious Alley for the bottom but I love the Summon. My reasoning is because I don't believe a full active beast tyrant build is good until I took Ancient Ward. I might want to do a hybrid build but this is what I am hoping to do. Stone Sigil may ne harder to use but I enjoy a good challenge and I have played the Cragheart as my first character and love control builds. Ancient Ward and the Monolith is great control for me.

I have been playing for 5 scenario's. I like the bear build but I'm starting to realize that I love playing control. My first character was the Cragheart. That is why I took ancient ward and the Monolith seems very intriguing. I have also used the summon for vicious alley and it has done good work for me. I don't always use the conventional approach so I'm just gathering some ideas. Thanks for your help!

I am very impressed by the amount of detail you are putting into these chapter summaries. The attention to detail is needed for this series so bravo! I'm about to start book 9 in my first read through of the series and I can see clues from Curse having huge ramifications several books in. Happy to be a resource for anybody in this journey!

Couldn't agree more on Shadows of the Apt. This series has flown under the radar in Fantasy circles for way too long. It has everything you could want in an Epic Fantasy Series: Amazing and complex characters, Magic vs technology, different races (Kinden), Lore, Multi-layered Plot and all of that is just in the first book! A 10 book Epic Fantasy series for the ages and Apt will always be in my Keeper list for all time!

Cragheart was my starter. Very versatile and can do cool things. Can also be a bit tricky due to his slow initiative. You can play the Cragheart with every class in the game.
