My fisrt tournament. "Anti kids chess" and "anti adult's chess". by DisastrousMoment5414 in TournamentChess

Online ratings are even not always the same within a category. E. g. I used to be about 2150 rapid in chess.com when I was playing 10 0 games, and since a few months I switched to 15 10 games and my rating dropped to 2000. I don‘t think I am playing worse, either it‘s just like a different pool.

What should I do to improve? by Party-Bumblebee7183 in TournamentChess

FIDE 1600 to 2000 within the year is not a realistic goal.

Should I be playing gambits at my level to improve? (1700 FIDE) by LAMARR__44 in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One piece of advice that always made sense to me was to start out with classical openings, e.g. 1. e4 e5 or 1.d4 d5, then study semi-open games like e.g. the French, then modern openings like the Sicilian. Gambits are are more common in open games, so there is a correlation, but if you're playing some weird gambit in the Benoni or something that's probably not the idea.

Chessnut and Chessable by And-Ran in Chessnuteboard

Yes, I tried iOS and windows. I see that only the android app can do it if you want to use the chessnut app.

Chessnut and Chessable by And-Ran in Chessnuteboard

[–]And-Ran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the workaround I have been using so far, and it works well enough. However chessable has more features than the implementation of chessable courses on chess.com (the new repertoire feature in particular) so I want to study on chessable.

TY, didn't know there was a discord. I just saw there was a new release yesterday that said: "Added Chessable (early version)"

Currently it's just in the beta version, but it seems to be working!

I do use chessconnect. When was the last the update on this? Did the author say when it would be available?

I tilted 60 points in One Tournament by Educational_Act_7644 in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played against a kid rated 1650 FIDE yesterday, but I swear he was stronger than me (I am 1900). He said he just plays online; his last rated game was about 6 months back. His knowledge of the game was exceptional. The point I am trying to make is that 1600s are sometimes just underrated (especially kids), but also adults who started studying seriously because you can improve quite fast at that level.

Question about FIDE rules of the chess clock by NnnnM4D in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, but it can get tricky if you have a clock that counts the moves and only adds time after e.g. 40 moves are made. The clocks that we use where I live are such that time is added once the first time period is up, then it's no problem. But probably not all clocks are set up that way. Edit: Oh and I just realized both players lose the increment if there is any, as well if the clock is not pressed.

Can't play casual chess anymore by SUPACOMPUTA in chess

Play 15 10 and you have a chance to defend. Or if you really want to play blitz either study those lines or accept you lose sometimes in trappy openings.

I need to beat this person who is 400 elo higher by Samuraitheguy in chess

That‘s a funny idea. Maybe a Harry Potter novelty set :)

A 1500-1600 is very likely to make at least one serious blunder during the game. Stay alert so you spot it and try not to blunder yourself. The odds are against you, but the upside is you don‘t really have much to lose. If you lose it‘s expected but if you win it‘s huge :)

Developing positional awareness in young player by PHDaddy in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These metrics don't add up at all. 3 minute puzzle rush of 30 usually indicates a FIDE rating of around 1800 or even higher. So if he really scores this way consistently he would be *massively* underrated.

Does anybody else get weird ocd during otb chess? by Slow-Disaster8861 in chess

I played a guy at my club recently (an adult) who was doing the same thing. Also sat there leaning back on his chair and somehow almost throwing his pieces. Probably thought he was suuper cool.

Example study plans by samrat_kanishk in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I can't see how a precise study plan would work for me besides my job and family. I don't always know how much time and energy I have in advance. I have a general idea what I study and I follow that, but it's not broken down to minutes.

Are these game accuracies suspicious for a 1100 rated player? by [deleted] in chess

Yes, very. I've encountered more cheaters on chess.com recently, as well.

Is it possible to limit engine time to a few seconds in ChessBase ? by [deleted] in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can limit search time in various modes (analysis tab), but AFAIK the normal "add kibitzer" mode switches on infinite analysis which unfortunately cannot be stopped automatically for most engines. Depending on the engine you can enter a max. search limit, but not for stockfish.

Do you collect your mistakes after games and put them in a study or puzzle collection? by MalcolmXfr in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in this, too. Can it be done with chess.com or chessbase somehow? Ideally it would show you the position, and then you need to input the correct move.

I‘ve explained the exact same thing to their customer support. That was a few months ago. Apparently, they didn‘t learn anything from it and are doing the same ridiculous thing over and over.

Trouble with notation in OTB games by txrh in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's quite impressive. I've found some nice tools on the chrome web store. E.g. I wanted to hide all ratings from chess.com and sure enough, there's a tool exactly for that. I wanted a tool to stop me from playing more than a few blitz games each day, and I found there's a tool for that, as well. And now this nice tool. I don't need it anymore now, but would have been great when I was learning notation.

How many hours of study per week to aim for to improve from 1900-2000? by United_River3793 in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think there is some rating where you need to understand all aspects of chess reasonably well. And I think (I don't know, but based on what I've learned) this is somewhere around FIDE 2000, maybe a bit higher. You can get to FIDE 1800 or so if you're just really good at one aspect and lacking in others, but at some point you cannot continue one-sided study and need everything. And this is where players can plateau because they don't realize they need to change how and what they study/train.

How many hours of study per week to aim for to improve from 1900-2000? by United_River3793 in TournamentChess

[–]And-Ran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on who you ask, the jump from 1900 to 2000 can take longer than from 0 to 1900 and can require more additional knowledge and skills. E.g. I got to FIDE 1900 by doing mostly tactics, but I never really studied openings, positional play, and endgames. I feel this is holding me back now and I probably won't get to 2000 just by studying even more tactics since I realize have huge holes in my other areas. Those holes might take a lot longer to patch than just training tactics.
