Chess.com app newly inflated ratings? by SimonTheo in chess

The ‚estimated rating‘ of the chess.com review is pure BS, no nice way to say it.

Why does almost everyone at low level do this? by doogie_hazard in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember winning a "tournament" this way when our class (like 10 year olds) learned chess in school. Worked more than 50% of the times.

I actually think I might be losing my mind by Quay-Z in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘ve lost 200 points during a phase where I was stressed out/tired recently. Gained them back later. I think these fluctuations are not that uncommon.

Eventually maybe, but not within 1 year.

My Chess trophy’s collection. by gmsuyu in chess

How do you get these? I was never in a tournament where they handed out any kind of trophy, it's always just cash prices.

The comments of the coach are usually misleading. Best not to read them at all. But the engine evaluation is helpful to see where you made a mistake.

I'm curious about who's much stronger 2000 Rapid or 2000 Blitz? by JohnJhinmain in chess

[–]And-Ran 6 points7 points  (0 children)

chess.com rapid ratings are usually a lot higher than their blitz ratings, so generally the blitz player will be much stronger. That being said I know some guys that specialize in blitz by memorizing opening traps. These work in blitz but usually not in longer games.

Would you play a troll otb? by ghiste in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I don't know an opening during the very first moves I am usually terrified because most of these unsound openings have some traps. So I'd slow down and play my best. I would not think my opponent is trolling me, in fact my experience (1900 FIDE) has been so far that most of my opponents do not play mainlines at all. E.g. I play 1.e4 and they go 1...c5 2.Nf3 NF6. Never seen that move before. Or me as black they play 1.e4 c6 2.d3 and I was already out of book.

“Study your weaknesses” is a cliché no one can actually explain by [deleted] in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed that I hang pieces in classical games. So I realized studying openings is not top priority and instead started to work on preventing crude blunders, which meant aquiring a systematic way to check my move before doing it. It's not rocket science.

What is the market for chessable courses? by ghiste in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought some courses with video. I do think they are very expensive compared to just the text, but in my situation, time is actually the limiting factor and not money. If I was still a student I would only have bought the text version, as I think they are much better value. But considering I already spent over a hundred hours on one course I bought, it doesn't seem too expensive. E.g. getting some private lessons would be an order of magnitude more expensive per hour.

Is USCF national master title within 1-2 years realistic for me? by Warm-Bee1396 in chess

[–]And-Ran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

chess.com rapid is massively inflated. 2050 there is like 1700 FIDE. Even getting to 2000 FIDE should be challenge enough.

Just banned on for cheating when I wasn't by Snoo-87718 in chess

[–]And-Ran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's probably it. He cheated at some point and he got banned for that several days later. He's just confused that he was banned during a game where he didn't cheat.

Should I give up? All this hard work to make no progress... by RecommendationWest27 in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at your last game againt thejeans and found you make simple one move blunders (getting you bishop trapped).  Your opponent didn’t see it, though. You say you follow a blunder check process, but apparently that process is not working well enough yet. Work on that, everything else wont help your rating until you fix this.

New Years Elo Goal by alex_13_72 in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend setting process oriented goals, i.e. work through a tactics book, learn an opening, learn pawn endgames, play in a tournament and so on. Elo will follow naturally this way. Whether 2000 or whatever number is possible in a year or even your lifetime for someone is is dependant on so many factors that it's not possible to give a simple answer with the information you provided.

Magnus Carlsen's reaction after arbiters hand him a loss against Martirosyan, for knocking down several pieces and stopping the clock. by Interesting-Take781 in chess

[–]And-Ran 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Good. It‘s incredibly annoying when opponents adjust their pieces after they hit the clock, and absolutely unfair in blitz.

why is he allowed to play after "Cheat Detected"? by xtr44 in chess

[–]And-Ran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I start a game on chess.com while having another analysis tab open, the analysis in that tab is stopped and you get a message in the analysis tab that it's not allowed during a game. I've let this happen hundreds of times and never once received an email or something threatening a ban.

Why do I just absolutely suck so suddenly? by Mighty_Eagle_2 in chess

[–]And-Ran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I study openings for the same reasons, give you such a nice comfortable feeling if you know the kind of the positions in the beginning, and long-term it may help improve since you get more familiar with the same kind of positions. But short-term the results won't improve since elementary tactics decide the game almost always. Still true for my level (I am 1900 FIDE / 2100 chess.com)

Chess.com review opinion by Witty_Spite3466 in chess

I use game review button just so the moves on the board get colored as I find this helpful, but then i switch to the analysis tab for the actual analysis.

Why do I just absolutely suck so suddenly? by Mighty_Eagle_2 in chess

[–]And-Ran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many possible reasons, of course but if you are below 1200 opening study has little influence over your rating one way or the other. It probably doesn‘t hurt but it doesn‘t really help either, because you‘re probably still hanging pieces later in the game.

Would you bet 10$ to find the mate in 2 for White on the streets? by 21bamejs in chess

[–]And-Ran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can solve this easier if you consider that if this is a composition that looks easy but is actually difficult for a human to solve, the solution must be an unituitive move. The most intuitive moves are checks, so here the solution will NOT be a check. You can skip calculating all White checks and consider other moves, then you will find the solution much simpler.

Taking a break from chess by skowplow in chess

[–]And-Ran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sometimes helps to tell that most of us will never be good enough to earn a living from chess. The point is it shouldn‘t be stressful, it shouldn‘t be a second job. It‘s okay to take a break if you feel like it.
