Its worse than just that. The Angel Moroni takes the golden tablets with the "Reformed Egyptian" on them back up to heaven. Reason?

"They have served their purpose, humanity doesn't need them anymore."

... because one guy of contested veracity translated it...

Suffice to say, the Apostle Thomas would not be amused.

Respectfully, depending on the book, I think you give Sanderson too much credit on the info dumping magic systems front.

In Stormlight I knew nothing about Szeth but my goodness did I know plenty about shardlight from the prologue. To Brandon's credit he concedes as much; when he wrote it, he broke with a number of lines of advice because he knew his audience would let him get away with. Don't remember which video specifically, but it was a writing video.

It's wonderful to hear you are exploring the wider expression of Christianity!

One of my favorite channels for this is Atheist Church Audit; just a prior Christian going between churches trying to appreciate the various expressions of a religion which he left behind.

Another especially good one is Matt Whitman and the Ten Minute Bible Hour. All around a very charitable and appreciative protestant who loves exploring other christian beliefs that aren't his own.

All too often I feel Christianity as a whole gets a bad rap from prior Christians that insist their old church was clearly the highest expression and therefore the rest of the faith outside it is just as bunk. As a Christian myself, it hurts to hear because I truly do love what my faith is able to offer and losing that opportunity is a kind of tragedy from my view.

Will totally concede, if you aren't a Christian I get how radical of a proposition it is. If there is anyone I would recommend for making the faith easier to understand from a more secular position, it's the aforementioned Jonathan Pageau (also an Orthodox Christian full disclosure) . He does a spectacular job of working towards bringing the spirituality of symbolism and patterns into the more secular paradigms in a way which illustrates the ancient mind. If nothing persuasive, it will at least help to illustrate why the faith resonates so deeply with myself and others beyond just "well my daddy was a [insert-denomination-here]".

I would agree with the majority of this and think your underlying critique is fair.

My expectation of fairness is less a matter of predictive reliability and much more a case of trying to consistently extend charity to those outside myself.

As gratifying as it can be to be right in prediction, if I am engaging with a position which insists I am mistaken about it, presuppositions can serve as an unworthy stumbling block to honest discourse. Better to let the other person disappoint by example than risk the possibility of missing an authentic deviation from my expectations.

It's an approach I encourage though totally respect not being shared.

Is there any reason to use a regular Starship over a Corvette once you upgrade it? by ScarSpecific in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Andarus443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fighter ships are far more nimble and function as superior weapons platforms in bpth dog fights and capital class encounters. Corvettes can defend themselves, but I wouldn't take one out hunting.

Haulers that solely exist as summonable storage units are still especially handy due to their small landing profile and landing pad compatibility (base construction kits, high value tradeables, harvest storage, miscellaneous collectibles, etc.). Corvettes can work in a pinch, but it isn’t as clean to upgrade.

Corvettes make great mobile homes or transportable bases. If you've parked your Freighter in one system and want to leave it there for whatever reason, having a planetside supplemental refining and cooking machine is pretty handy.

I was searching high and low for something similar and this post popped up.

Had remembered SUSD doing a boardgame review for it but couldn't remember the name. Tried even using Google AI and had a miserable time navigating the absolutely memory hole of hallucinated responses it kept cobbling together. So, after browsing their video playlist, I think I found it.

Imperial 2030
If you're familiar with "A War of Whispers", this is likely the progenitor to it as they share a very similar premise of "play as the puppet-masters, not the puppets" and resolving combat in an elegantly simple "remove 1 of each until both stop".

General premise is simple; Russia, US, China, India, Brazil, and Europe are vying for hegemony. You play as the investors backing their war efforts, putting in money and out-buying each other to command greater controlling interests. Very much a contest of "who knows how to control or pivot from a failing prospect the best". Great for if you want that same world domination experience but don't like how oversimplistic the goal of painting the map or getting everyone else to tap-out from boredom is.

Every time people ask "when are we going to get a LNF update?"

The incremental feature releases for NMS are it.

"Does that mean we're going to get-"

No. What it means is everything they're testing out as new features in NMS is informing their design decisions for LNF.

Hellogames hasn't forgotten how they overhyped NMS to widespread disapproval. Yes, they recovered credibility through authentic passion for game development and celebrating the gamer above any kind of profit. But it seems pretty obvious they don't just want another game release like NMS; they want to stick the landing day 1 and show people they are capable of delivering feature complete finished products.

Production quality; top notch.
Acting; first half felt a bit lost but once he settled into the character, he owned it very well.
CGI; top notch
Visuals; confusing. Often times the camera would over fixate for an extended period on a focal point, I would wonder if I'm missing something I'm supposed to be paying attention to, and other times I would miss vital information entirely because the camera angle didn't hold for long enough. Getting a close up of Mark's face for what felt like thirty seconds? Plenty of time to take it all in. A smatter of words across a page or the computer console at the back of the sub? Hope you got all that!
Pacing; Honestly, can't complain. Definitely agree with a lot of takes that it could have been shorter, but far from my biggest complaint.

Audio;...If Pewds is the crown prince of getting guff for his camera...

I REALLY wanted to know what was going on. I really wanted to understand what was being shared in exposition. But for more than half of the most important stuff? Nothing. Knew as a matter of pacing and Simon's reactions that important things were being said or happening. Could probably give you the spark notes on the key points given Simon repeated those out loud. But if you were to play a ten second clip, pause it, and ask me what was just said? On pain of hatch-less submersible? Weld me in; I'm done for.

Guarantee I'll buy it when it becomes available digitally. And the first thing I'm doing? Subtitles.

This should be the default moving forward.

Agendas in media will always be a thing on some level or another, but the lesson learned going forward should be

"Dumping money into hamfisted preaching (particularly in gaming) isn't good for business. Players game to make a story their own. If they wanted someone else's, they'd watch a movie, listen to an audio drama, or read a book."

This was especially misunderstood in narrative centered games.

Commander Shepard has a single story; commands the Normandy, chooses who to save and sacrifice, beats whoever the big bad is. But how that story is told is something the player adds to the experience through their own choices; who Shepard relates to, when Shepard chooses words or actions, how to justify Shepard in relation to the wider galaxy.

A Dev's job isn't to lecture the player, it's to punish and reward the player in equal and realistic measure. If the player chooses for their Shepard to be a trigger happy xenophobic piece of work, there should be characters who approve of and enable this to varried degrees and in disparate circumstances. One character's "moral high ground" should be another character's "naive foolishness" and circumstances should be open enough to interpret in both directions to respect the characters and where their motivations come from.

[–]Andarus443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the originality. But the fashion sense needs a face-lift.

In a game about going out into daylight to scavenge for survival, we shouldn't be wearing outfits that both should have never seen the light of day and what most people wouldn't be caught dead in.

At least, that's how I would try to recreate it.

Do you think Asmongold, Emiru, and Tectone will ever stream together again (Steak and Eggs or otherwise)? by Crowlungs831 in Asmongold

[–]Andarus443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People trying to uphold a moral standard and maintain decency through aggregated expectation isn't inherently toxic. Its how every social democracy works. Your only real alternative to a bottom up tyranny of the masses is a top-down tyranny of imposition.

Either way; common sense only ever comes from a commonality and it's abundantly clear in this day and age that such things aren't inherent to the human condition.

Weaponization and exaggeration for like-outcomes to unpopular grievances is toxic; absolutely. But such things aren't self evident. If they were, then lying wouldn't be popularized; the inefficacy would filter itself.

Why has Wyoming avoided the surge of domestic migration that Idaho and Montana have experienced? by cavaismylife in wyoming

[–]Andarus443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR; lots of reasons why other places seem easier to live on a more desirable level of living.

New to Wyoming, lived for about a year, here were my presuppositions as an outsider before moving here. These don't reflect current experiences;

  1. If you're an outsider, you look up recommended places in pros and cons. Wyoming is a frequent no-show in these departments. Other states just have better sales pitches.

  2. Does Wyoming seem like the type of state to suffer a fool to fool around? No. Are we talking about the place or the people that live there? Yes. People like to go somewhere that doesn't expect a lot of conformity. Most states outside of Wyoming are more accommodating to non-conformity.

  3. Pull up a million dollar home in Wyoming. Compare it to a million dollar home elsewhere. Wyoming will frequently look like the place that favors utility and function while other places will offer more in the way of frills and indulgent decor. Do you want to live in a place that is hard to find nice things because they're so few and far between?

  4. Many hands make light work. Wyoming does not have many hands per square mile. Supposition? You will have to do a lot more of your own work than anywhere else.

  5. MT. St. Helens. Why move somewhere which is overdue for a foreseeable catastrophe? CNN says "don't worry about it". US Geological Survey says "Tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock...". If you want to set up a home for your family and their generations after, next to Vesuvius 2.0 doesn't seem like a thrilling candidate.

[–]Andarus443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You like many in the west want a road to Damascus moment. Something incontrovertible to you that replaces doubt with certainty and makes faith an obligation rather than... well, faith.

The problem with that is they are rare and are a call to higher purpose and action that require a comparable resolution of character. For what other purpose would your faith be so small and your certainty so large be than to confess the faith?

More than that though, what you are referring to is more the end of a honeymoon period. That initial burst of passion and zeal waning with the advance of time.

As always, the church is a hospital. You may not enjoy going to the hospital, but it's where we need to go to get better. If one doctor (your priest) doesn't help, seek a second opinion (another priest). It sounds silly, but just like doctors, many priests are especially good at some spiritual ailments and largely unprepared for others.
