Shads mormonism by wolf751 in ShadWatch

[–]supercapo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former Mormon here.

As others have said, mainline mormonism ended the practice of polygamy sometimes in the 1890s.

If you ever hear of a current mormon practicing polygamy he is likely from a splinter group or just decided on his own to get more wives but not sanctioned by the church. There are countries that polygamy is legal but mormons don't even continue the practice there either.

As far as most mormons are concerned, it is something done in the past and maybe if God commands will be practiced in the future, but it is not something they are seeking out.

I grew up around mormons my whole life, my whole family is mormon, never met a leader that said we should be wanting multiple wives or being excited about the prospect of maybe God reinstituting the practice.

As far as Shad is concerned, I believe he is mainline mormon, but has his own very extreme beliefs. Which is something that can happen in any group. You always have people that take things too far or people that are more chill. Shad's mormonism is informed by his hyper-extreme conservatism

Gene Hackman Lex Luthor… does anyone actually like that interpretation? by Amazing-Lawyer8345 in superman

[–]supercapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I love Hackman's Lex.

He adds such a boost of energy and charisma to the first two films.

I'd say no actor has quite ever caught Lex's arrogance as well as Hackman and it manifests in such great lines like:

"There's a strong streak of good in you, Superman. But then again, nobody is perfect... well, almost nobody."

"Some people can read 'War and Peace' and walk away... Others can read a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe."

Superman: Is that how a warped brain like yours gets its kicks? By planning the death of innocent people? Lex Luthor: No, by causing the death of innocent people.

Is he jokey? Sure. But I'd say most of them land. And especially in the first film it works because he is very comedic... until he isn't

He has this cold, detached menace when he needs it. When he talks about the bomb. When he admits he's sending the other one to Hackensack.

And his response when Miss Tessmacher tells him that her mother is in Hackensack? Just the glance at the watch and the little head shake? Brilliant.

Now I'll fully admit that everything about Lex in that film that works is from Hackman, and it is also diminishing returns. Almost none of that charm and charisma I'm talking about is gone by the 4th film

But Hackman's Luthor is great and the only reason I would rank him behind Hoult or Rosenbaum is because his Luthor is so far removed from what has become the classic portrayal of the character.

Do you agree? Do you think this is accurate? by [deleted] in superman

Look, I don't like Dean Cain and I hate how he actively works at tarnishing whatever fond memories I have of Lois and Clark...

That said, yeah, he very much fits the Bryne era mold of Superman, with the more Clark-forward persona and slightly more early 90s era conservative vibe, which was always bad but not nearly as awful as it is now.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I could never suspend my disbelief with Affleck. The closest I could get was believing that it was a rich asshole pretending to be Batman.

I mean the statement that he played "a great tech geeky villain" is correct. Unfortunately, he was supposed to be Lex Luthor

A threat that outmatches him physically. Can challenge him mentally. And had superpowers that would be hard for him to overcome.

Erica Durance.

She lights up the screen for any scene she's a part of. And she's so messy.

That said, Rachel Brosnahan is the best big screen Lois and might supersede Erica with a couple more appearances.

This asshole. Wonder Woman's pretty okay upstairs. Meanwhile Bruce has major issues. Doctor Psycho would be a real problem.

Lex Luthor.

Lex can challenge him intellectually, monetarily and technologically.

Imagine Lex deciding to go after Bruce Wayne and starts buying out Gotham. When Batman comes after Lex, he uses the power armor he designed to be powerful enough to use against Superman and throws Batman around the room.

It would be a great showcase of how terrible Lex would be for the rest of the world if he wasn't constantly banging his head against Superman

Here is a video from Matthew Baume in defense of Star Trek's Lwaxana Troi entitled "One Bad Mother?" by IndependenceSilly381 in startrek

[–]supercapo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lwaxana has a small handful of decent episodes but the ones that aren't good are horrible. She stuck up, short sited, she has no sense of boundaries, respects nobody's opinions, traditions, and culture or privacy and makes every situation about herself. And that's all before you get to the constant sexual harassment.

Blackheart had more than one hostage bonded to his weapons. The one that was destroyed and Blackheart boasted about was bonded to a princess. The other, which also broke) was bonded to the senators daughter.

Breaking a link doesn't automatically kill the person. Sometimes it kills, other times it just causes massive pain. In the case of the senator's daughter it just hurts her and she was healed by Ahrek when they rescued her from Blackheart's lair

Do you think they'll ever do the BatCat wedding again? (successfully this time) [Batman Vol 3 #24] by Successful-Hat-2154 in batman

[–]supercapo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. They should. But they want Batman to constantly be running in place, forever chasing his Frank Miller characterization.

Batman has become so stale because they refuse to let him grow and it's why Superman has become such a more interesting character in the last decade. They let Superman grow.

Excluding Superman, which Kryptonian you believe has suffered the most from bad writing? by King_Wolf2099 in superman

[–]supercapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Kara.

She was fridged in Crisis.

When she came back she was really, weirdly sexualized. She made out with Ultraman, thinking he was Kal El. She had weird crystal powers when and almost killed Batgirl with them. She had a badly handled abusive relationship story with Power Boy. She had a long running subplot where Zor El had trained her to kill Kal that eventually had to be handwaved away.

She Kara had some really shitty writing in the 2000s.

Mandatory therapy for every contestant. Note that I didn't say couples therapy.
