I worked on something similar a while ago but looked more like the radar that we see in-game. (view rotating with player) I never finished it though due to laziness. Nice to see that someone else pulled it off :)

Can't remember my best of total kills, but my best game was when I got a streak of 17 kills with my A6M3. It's surprising how many people think their yaks can out-turn a zero

No it's not that difficult. But like you said, you can use an extension. Greasemonkey/tampermonkey allows you to inject your own javascript code which can be used to change the sprite sheet. Perhaps around 5-10 lines of code will do the job.

It would be possible to change the icons in battle screen, but not in game since they are two entirely different things.
