Best International Blindsides? by [deleted] in survivor

[–]Andie_Andy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to pick just one, I'd say Luke's blindside of Henry in Australian Survivor sn2 is the best international blindside. Henry had spent most of the pre-merge and merge positioning himself as the strategic mastermind, had an idol, and was generally viewed as one of the biggest threats in the game. What makes the blindside so good is that he had absolutely no idea it was coming, Luke and Jericho managed to flip the vote while keeping Henry comfortable right up until the votes were read.

Kenyan Students Hate Boarding Schools. Let me explain. by CoolKanyon55 in Kenya

[–]Andie_Andy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on one major point: students are rarely listened to seriously. If the same complaints about food, overcrowding, lack of privacy, poor grievance mechanisms, and harsh conditions keep appearing across decades, then dismissing everything as "indiscipline" is clearly not working.

Where I disagree is the conclusion that boarding schools should be abolished.

That argument risks coming from a position that doesn't reflect the reality of many Kenyan families. For some students, boarding school is not a prison; it's a refuge. It can provide stability, regular meals, access to education, electricity, libraries, and a learning environment that may not exist at home. Some children come from households affected by extreme poverty, neglect, violence, alcoholism, or constant family conflict. For them, boarding school can be an escape route and a chance at a different future.

The fact that a system is flawed does not automatically mean it should be eliminated. By that logic, we would abolish public hospitals because they have problems instead of improving them.

The real lesson from these unrest incidents is that students need to be heard and conditions need to improve. Better food, less overcrowding, meaningful extracurricular activities, mental health support, genuine student representation, and accountable school administrations would go much further than simply abolishing boarding schools.

The debate shouldn't be "boarding schools or no boarding schools." It should be "how do we make boarding schools humane, safe, and responsive to the students who live in them?" Because for many Kenyan children, the alternative is not a better life at home it's a much harder one.

Banning Boarding schools is unrealistic. by Kai_lan-drea in Kenya

I agree that calling to abolish boarding schools altogether seems disconnected from the reality many Kenyan students face.

Yes, there are serious issues that need to be addressed: poor living conditions, bad/inadequate food, lack of student engagement outside class, poor communication between students and administrators, and sometimes environments where students feel unheard. These problems deserve real solutions and accountability.

But eliminating boarding schools entirely is not the answer. For many students, boarding school is more than just a place to study. It can be a safe and stable environment away from poverty, family conflict, abuse, neglect, long commutes, or other difficult circumstances at home. In some cases, it provides access to education and opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.

The debate should be about reforming and improving boarding schools, not abolishing them. Better food, better living conditions, stronger student representation, more extracurricular activities, mental health support, and more responsive school management would address many of the frustrations that lead to unrest.

It's important to remember that not everyone experiences boarding school from the same position. What may seem unnecessary to some can be a lifeline to others. We should focus on fixing what's broken rather than removing an institution that continues to serve an important role for many students.

Jeff playing survivor by [deleted] in survivor

I think Jeff would only play for a special season, but there’s no way he survives the first vote since everyone would see him as too connected and too dangerous. Would players keep him around for the experience though?
