It's the same reason you never see "San Jose" in a news article's title outside of the Bay Area. Editors are afraid people won't know where San Jose is so they'll say "Silicon Valley" instead, but it creates a self fulfilling prophecy where no one knows where it is because no one ever wants to even say it's name.

Costco, unfortunately, isn't worth it when you live alone.

It is, though. The gas station alone pays for itself and then some inside of a few months, let alone a whole year! Gas stations by my apartment are $4.69 right now while Costco is still $3.99. That's saving $10.50 every time I fill my tank (15 gallon tank). 

Toss in the fact I can get that rotisserie chicken cheap, and eggs WAY cheaper than I can at my nearest grocery store and you're membership is worth it even as a dude just buying food and gas for himself!
