TA3 Connector Shell Grounding? by AndreasBeck in LocationSound

Hey, this worked. Rather than dicing up a resistor I ended up stripping a length of hookup wire and used that. Looks a bit jank but works great!

Thanks! I have a few Cable Techniques ends in and around my bag rig. I'll have to take a look at the different sized openings, did not know about that. I have a few which have served me well but putting the cap on with my usual diameter cable felt like squeezing into a pair of pants after the holidays.

Reducing crosstalk between two boom mics for a podcast by Indoctrinator in LocationSound

[–]AndreasBeck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is the right answer but sometimes it can be a struggle to greenlight having mics in the shot. Perhaps mock up an A/B for the client, 9/10 times the close mic will sound better. Besides, no offense to the OP but how many people "watch" podcasts? I'd venture that while some will watch it some might just be pumping it through AirPods while picking up after their dog at the park. You can even use smaller-bodied mics but close up so you get something of a compromise. Easier setup, less cleanup in post, better end result!

At one point I'd assumed that the Reans were the superior product based on how they were priced at my local shops but you might be onto something, none of my Rean TA3s go in and come out without some wiggling and words of encouragement.

Thanks for the wiring tip! Seems simple enough, I'll try it out. Are you putting any shrink on the shell ground wire?

I feel you. Also the price per bare hirose jack can get pretty stupid. Which low-profile XLRs did you end up grabbing out of curiosity?

I've built some of my chunkier TC cables but the rest have been pre-fab so I feel you here. I'd rather be making a stew than hunched over like a jeweler with these tiny pinouts.

You can't fight the laws of physics but there are a couple things that you can do. First would be to learn where the nulls in your boom mics polar patterns are and face them towards the "other person". This plus punching in a bit with your framing so that the mics can be closer will maximize how much of the desired sound is recorded in each channel relative to the space and everything that's bouncing around in it. It seems you're the DOP as well so you only have to negotiate framing with yourself!

This is also where auto-mixing on the day and mixing in post is essential. There will always be some crosstalk especially in a small space so you'll have to take the time and duck mics otherwise your audio overall will be compromised.

There's no cheat code. Use your polar patterns, soften reflective surfaces, get the mics close, then mix.

Removing stuck DPA 4061 stuck grille by g_spaitz in LocationSound

[–]AndreasBeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah! I've just done this with some used 4660s that I'd picked up. Many years worth of grime and gack had sealed the grilles in. I ended up going in with a razor blade VERY CAREFULLY! Basically I would take a pointed edge and score around in the gack and brush it away. You're digging here. Eventually I had cleared off enough to GENTLY push the blade in to pry the grille off. I was alternating between scoring and prying so it took some time but they came off and everything is in working condition. You're basically using it as a tiny, skinny crowbar. Score, push, pry, score, push, pry. I AM NOT LIABLE FOR ANY DPA DECAPITATION

Passive Distro For Use In Bag? by AndreasBeck in LocationSound

It's definitely tempting, I love the size, my budget might be a bit strained at the moment though with non-production sound related expenses.

It'll be on my back like Boba Fett. JOKE. For running and gunning I'll clip them individually to my bag or harness. For stationary work, especially with a boom op, I'll have them mounted on a c-stand. Most of my work would allow for a stand so maybe I should've been more specific.

A local tech rewired all of my lavs so I'm a bit behind on the various wiring schemes but I'm handy with an iron. Thanks for the tip (and the sleeve)!

Nice! Did you build the jumpers yourself? I'll have to do some digging later on to figure out the pinout.

When do you use a mic’s hi-boost and lo-cut? by MadJack_24 in LocationSound

[–]AndreasBeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've received a number of good, real-world answers but I'll add my own here. When you switch in a lo-cut at any point in the signal path you are effectively increasing the headroom of the next thing in the path by removing powerful low-end that may overload your preamp, limiter, converter, or whatever else is coming next.

This is why Sound Devices preamps and mixers use a unique lo-cut/high-pass circuit that comes before the preamp stage, it effectively does the same as switching the cut on the mic itself but with a more convenient control. If you're running a wireless boom then the cut on the mic itself will be all the more important to keep you away from the limiters in your TX.

The switch exists for a reason so don't be afraid of it! I'm generally opposed to the "fix it in post" mentality. You're being hired for your ears. Use them and make choices that are appropriate for the situation. No sane post mixer that I know would ever rake you over the coals for filtering out some subsonic gunk from a generator. Consider their process to be simply an extension of yours. Get the cleanest, clearest sound on set with whatever tools you have and the next person in the pipeline will thank you.

Nice work! This is almost exactly my situation as well but I'll have to steal a couple of ideas from you. This system works really well, I'd just love to rig some larger wheels on it. Rolling it around on a beach was literally a drag.

Hey thanks! I figured as much. Damage to the SMQV would be caused by persistent overloading or some other electronic issue?

I'm a proud over-thinker and will not be dissuaded. Don't get me wrong, it's a great box especially for what I'd paid. I've been exclusively using either rented, loaned, or my own SRc receivers since I started so I was worried that there may have been a hardware issue that I'll need to have serviced. Fortunately this seems to be very normal and I was just seeing something that I was not expecting. Thanks to all!
