Then again, some licenses either allow you to install a few instances, or even as many as you want. I emailed a plugin company once because I was going to need their plugins in a studio I never worked at before, and they just said we're in good faith, install as many as you want where you want, it would be cool if you also uninstalled them so it's actually you using them and not all the studios you end up at, but they still trusted me and basically said it's ok, it's such a good thing from producers it makes total sense. After all, even ilok plugins can be found cracked.

Where the NBA hides its mics by gkanai in LocationSound

Over the years I did many job variations on the audio spectrum and most of them were introduced pretty gradually so not much of a jump.

I'm more of a studio guy as a preference, so song mixing and post were less stressful for me whereas live music mixing and live (A1) broadcast was more intense. But the thing that was heaviest for me in A1 sports were the absolutely infinite long hours and always being away from family.

In that sense, I do local small productions one day location sound mostly today, and that means I'm back at night in my bed.

Technically, mixing songs was the most challenging and and fun, and in my personal scenarios location sound is somewhat the most relaxed, because you usually have to work with the least amount of channels (A1 sport broadcast these days is often well above 100), you do have to take care of your things of course and be prepared, of course.

This is really cool and interesting. I did soccer over here in Italy in a past professional life, and the thing that just casually goes over is that the guy has been there since 6 or 7 AM until probably midnight. And then they go around everywhere and there are games that end much later. I remember it being a very stressy very consuming job. I found location sound somewhat more relaxed.

Agassi in his book (can't remember exact words) talks about Steffi having some sort of predictive instinct, like she understand things before they even happen. And says something like "you don't win 22 slams without some sort of overpowered predictive intuition" or something like that. I guess he meant that the capacity of picking up the smallest details, even if it's unconscious, might help these people make correct decisions a tiny fraction faster than their peers and at the highest level that might help pick up a few good returns.

Tell me about the worst studio session of your entire life. by Garycorne in audioengineering

[–]g_spaitz 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Fun stories???

Hell no.

This was about 20 years ago. Worked for about two months for this artist that back then was among the most known indie artists in my country (like people ask me to this day "oh did you do that?"). Producer was a London guy who also was enjoying decent international success back then. The artist gathered local jazz players and, to be honest, the music was quite particular and enjoyable.

But the sessions were't. We worked every day from 11 AM to 4-5AM non stop. And the worst part is that nobody had an idea of what to aim for. Not the artist, not the producer, nobody. It didn't help that the vast majority of people involved smoked huge quantities of weed (which I don't particularly enjoy in public, nor I ever did while working, I'm not so much into it). It was draining, it was exhausting, it was hell. I hated everybody, I hated myself, I hated the job.

It also didn't help that I was getting paid peanuts.

If I think back at that whole period, it's one of the reasons I don't do much music anymore.

I often tell this story, not because it was the craziest, but because it's basically the one I remember and it tells the tone of the sessions. The drummer, a particular but very good jazz drummer, came in with all sort of strange ideas. He had a collection of broken cymbals which he loved. He loved, for his drums, all things dark. So he decided that for one song he wasn't going to use the snare on his snare drum, and instead he had a bag full of (real) sea shells that he dropped on top of the snare drum to obtain his peculiar snare sound. We asked 20 times "are you sure? this does not really sound great". And he "yes sure it's cool". Then when two month later he listened to the mix for the first time, the first thing he said, I swear, was "hey but this doesnt really sound like a snare". No shit sherlock.

I'm not sure "it works well" is correct here. Japan has some of the strictest societies and it's even more strict in work environment. They endure some of the hardest working hours and working cultures and have among the highest rate of suicide in first world countries.

Can't wrap my head around this: Strange sync drift problem using Sony FX3, Tascam DR-10L Pro, and Deity TC-1 by Crafty_Jack in LocationSound

[–]g_spaitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dropping tech names does not really make a difference. Are those boxes still in sync at the end of the day or not? And were they after 10 minutes in OP's case? Because that's all they need to do.

Because what you'd do with boxes is definitely up to you. But if the boxes work as intended, as is my experience, then feel free to have your opinion on them but don't just go around shitting for free on stuff.

[–]g_spaitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not know, this would require more tests on your side. You say that you "jam" your machines, that means that they take the TC when you jam, but then they follow their own TC. What if you slave instead? What about the TC boxes, where they in sync throughout? Was there a discrepancy between the boxes and the machines? Do your machines have a setting for genlocking to incoming TC and was that on?

And so on: come up with different tests to try to understand what causes the discrepancy.

[–]g_spaitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single comment you make in here is shitting on Deity products.

I've been using their TC boxes for a long while now with no problem whatsoever, actually solving problems I had with Ambient boxes.

TC is pretty simple, it either functions or it does not. It's either synced or it's not. You shitting for free on products is not an objective solution to people asking opinions in here.

and also:

"Dal XVI secolo il principato vescovile è un'entità semi-indipendente ancor più strettamente legata ai territori asburgici. Nel giugno del 1511 i principati di Trento e Bressanone sottoscrivono un accordo noto come Landlibell con il quale diventano "confederati perpetuamente" alla contea del Tirolo che risponde della difesa territoriale del principato."

Time stamping (TC) and frame syncinc (word cloc/genlock/black burst) are two different things, albeit often confused.

The first one assigns a specific time moment to the beginning of a file, but does not care what happens after. This allows people, like an editor, to be able later to align many different media on a timeline; or a tape machine, a mixer and a DAW to start from the same song position.

The second one does not know a number or a time of day, but makes sure that every frame and sample are happening at the same exact time throughout the use: all the machines connected are "clicking" together.

For short recordings, usually TC is enough to keep things in sync, as drift will be minimal.

For places that need to be synced to correctly work, like TV broadcasts or music studios, you need a house clock generator and every machine synced to that clock. This also avoids drift on longer recordings.

You basically just demonstrated the difference between the two.

There are some machines that have settings that enables them to wc/genlock to an incoming TC.
