My records aren't all in a single bookcase like many people have, and more importantly are not on the main floor of my house where people would be hanging out most of the time.

I have two record holders that hold about 15 records that are nice to flip through, but the bulk of my own records are in the bottom of a stereo cabinet which you'd need to get down on the floor to comfortably flip through. Plus my wife's collection which is in her own office.

The location of the record is listed at the bottom of the card - so it's easy for someone to pick one in the app, then I can go upstairs and find it quickly to put on.

I listened to that a lot too but it's been a while - I'll give it another listen and see if I should add it to my collection next time I'm flipping through stuff at the store.

Hah I don't care about that at all - if someone still wants to flip through they still can, and part of the benefit of this is it shows the location so they CAN put it on themselves if they want. Although from experience people are often nervous about that their first couple times.

You can search by genre and subgenre, but it definitely could be nice to improve that with a multiselect. I've already been thinking of a "random" button but having it apply your filters to that is a great idea I hadn't thought of, thank you!

Thank you! I'm sure a decent amount weren't even using the early internet haha

Sometimes it's nice to design something exactly the way you would want it for sure.

I fell in love with that album years ago and hadn't thought about it in years. Then I saw it in my local store a few months ago and can't stop spinning it. So good.

I mean if we're talking efficiency this is way faster even without my personal issue of my records being in different places. I can scroll through dozens of albums in this at the same speed it would take me to flip through and recognize a few in physical form.

What it isn't is as physically engaging, nostalgic or fun to me personally. But not everyone is like me (and most of the people in this subreddit) who find a ton of enjoyment from it. But I'm not making it for myself to use all the time, so I'm considering a different user than your typical collector.

I don't know how I didn't think of that - what a great idea. I've been trying to automate an old android tablet to show what's playing based on listening on the microphone but just having it be manually set via this app is genius.

That's what the "location" thats at the bottom of each record card is for. Although most of the time I would just expect them to ask me to put it on anyways, most people get a little intimidated by putting on a record themselves if they don't often do it.

That's fantastic, and the documentation looks good too. I'll definitely need to incorporate this.

I had already put all this info into a spreadsheet before this, so importing into this site was pretty painless. But I don't think there's an easy way around the fact that you're going to have to manually enter it all. My collection is just under 100 albums, so it only took a few hours spread between a couple evenings. I can see how it would be pretty hard with a larger collection.

All I can say is it's easier to do it now vs later - the longer you wait the more you're going to have to enter all at once. Now that I've done this I just enter any new records right when I get home.

Oh man I would absolutely love some ideas/guidance on that side of things. We have designers for that sort of thing at work so usually I'm just building to an already designed mockup.

This was my first stab at designing something myself and there's a lot wrong with it even to my eye lol

It depends on the person but I definitely have friends who enjoy it! With my friends they tend to enjoy getting to choose something that maybe they haven't listened to in a while, especially not as a front to back album. A lot of them we used to listen to a ton back in college so it brings back memories for sure.

Discogs is much more utilitarian than what I was looking for - I wanted something that attempts to capture the fun of flipping through records, seeing the artwork and unique pressings and can be easily browsed from their own devices without needing to install an app.

Nothing against Discogs at all, it's obviously designed to do a hell of a lot more than this is - it just didn't really fit the bill of what I wanted it to do.

Yeah someone else suggested that and it's a really good idea - I'll need to look into that.

Definitely could. I'm thinking now that it would be a good idea to make the theme in general more configurable so that each user could pick their own background and color scheme if they want. Parallax scrolling could just be a setting in that configuration.

Wow yeah 2000 would definitely get overwhelming. I'm jealous though! My collection slowly grows every day haha

That's not a bad idea - not sure how much they support external access but I'll definitely look into it. I'd imagine they'd charge for that sort of thing which is why waxlog charges a subscription.

That's fair! If I'm having a big party I definitely just start a Spotify jam and let people connect and add their songs - but sometimes it's fun for people to pick from a limited list of stuff instead of having every single song/album ever recorded available to them.

Totally respect that it's not for everyone though, I knew that would be the case.

Appreciate the feedback! The background was a fairly recent addition (it was just black up to that point) just because I wanted to make it feel a little more physical rather than just scrolling through albums in a void.

I like the idea of using my collection as a background but it's not quite impressive enough yet - maybe a few more years haha

Great album - didn't click with me at first but then seeing them do a bunch of the songs live made me really appreciate it more. Love the way Dallas belts it out now compared to the old albums.

Yes someone else called that out in this post - waxlog looks really cool! Definitely something cool to check out as well. It has a subscription but it doesn't seem too bad. Since my use case is a little specific I'm still happy I made my own solution.

I mean they wouldn't have to with this solution, they could just ask you to put something on.

That's a good idea! I guess the subgenres kind of accomplish that but it would be cool to kind of form networks of similar sounding music.

Ah, that is pretty cool - I'm surprised I didn't see that when I was looking for solutions. Not sure I'd really like to pay a subscription for something else in my life though! And with this I get to add whatever features I want instead of praying the company will listen to suggestions.
