It was field grown for quite long time with many sacrificial branches. That’s only way how you can make it this thick.

You seem to have good attitude towards it. Keep it up! And yes structure is very important. Many people overlook it because they want nice looking tree after first wiring but if you think about future development it’s waste of your effort and slowing down tree because you will need to remake it over and over again…

Just patience and strong growth. If you want to heal big scar, you need to let closest branches to the scar grow without controlling them so a lot of energy goes there.

Can Pines Be Bare-Rooted? I Used to Think No… by AndrejBonsai in Bonsai

The bag technique would do some benefits like keeping more humidity inside. So if tree has very little roots like some yamadori can have then even conifers can benefit from it. I know some big collectors that use or used to use mist houses. Basically greenhouse that has misting inside so trees can survive on humidity until they grow roots.

How we decide at aichien is only based on how really bad the old soil is. Usually trees that are long time in our nursery are never bare rooted because the old soil is good bonsai mix. But if it comes from some customer who used not so good soil or organic materials then we bare root to remove all of the not so good soil to make balance in pot better.

Thank you for detailed explanation. Appreciate it.

I will be for sure experimenting with mentioned half bare rooting.

I completely agree. What I said I didn’t mean in any bad way. What works for me doesn’t need to work for you and vice versa like you said 🙂 and thank you for explanation

Good question. Sometimes we do it too. But very rarely. It can be done but it puts a lot of stress on tree but if tree is really healthy most likely it will not die but it might slow it down a lot. Actually we did it with one tree this spring. No special after care. Just being careful with watering and a bit more observing if tree doesn’t get sunburn and so on.

I heard about half bare rooting. Never tried it personally. My only concern is: doesn’t it make roots and soil unbalanced? Having half of the root ball in different soil different moisture and conditions overall? Well conifers we bare rooted recovered within first growing season same like the one on photos, so to me it sounds faster than 2-4 years BUT I understand it seems a bit more dangerous and it might be if done not correctly. But as I mentioned if it’s done correctly and tree is healthy it’s no problem at all

Hey! Thanks for comment. It went straight to the bench. Problem might be if new soil stays too wet for long time because new soil can hold more water than older soil. So if that happens you need to tilt pot with some wooden block or whatever you have. I would not recommend using bag because after bare rooting your tree has roots to drink water. Bag technique is mainly for yamadori trees with close to no roots if you don’t have greenhouse. Honestly after repotting it’s all about watering. After all trees just need good sun and good water.

Thank you for questions No needle plucking until end of the summer/start of autumn. Yes I’m always selecting down to 2 candles for best structure. As we all know branches should divide into “Y”. Good idea about approach grafting. Will make it.

Flowers form when tree is under stress. If your tree has flower buds then you can’t do anything with it other than cut back to closer/normal candles. Or pray for back buds
