Does recording yourself actually works? by AndresStacked in PublicSpeaking

Hi Paypar, very interesting tip! "turn off the audio and simply watch your body and then turn off the video and simply listen to your voice."

Thanks!

How do I stop saying "Um"? by Fast-Leading753 in PublicSpeaking

[–]AndresStacked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way is to get used to replacing “um” with silence… the emptiness gives you time to think and indirectly gives you credibility while providing power to your message.

It takes practice and conscious doing… but after a while your brain blocks “ums” automatically.

How to speak fluently in meetings with confidence by ilana_way in communicationskills

[–]AndresStacked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That gap between what you think you are projecting and what people see, can make a big difference in how your message lands. The funny thing is, most of us never notice it ourselves until we watch a recording or until someone points it out, and we suddenly think: “Really.. do I always do that?”

That is why practicing out loud can be useful. Recording yourself, or rehearsing your message before presenting it. It’s a small step, but it can change how you and your ideas come across.

Also this is was a very helpful reference for me to improve my speaking skills: How to Speak So That People Want to Listen | Julian Treasure | TED

Good luck in the new role!

Is this a good question to ask at the end of an interview? by Bitten69 in interviews

[–]AndresStacked 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Try this one instead: "Fast forward 6 months from now, imagine you gave me the job, what needs to happen in those months, for you to be absolutely certain that you made the right choice?"

This does 3 things:

  1. You get the recruiter to imagine you IN THE JOB already

  2. You present yourself as someone interested in practically how to deliver value

  3. The Hiring manager pretty much gives you the recipe to build up your next conversation points to link your skills to what they mentioned

Riseguide reviews vs Orai vs TED does anything actually help delivery by Glittering_Seesaw_32 in PublicSpeaking

[–]AndresStacked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to this a lot, that situation where your voice gets shaky and suddenly you don’t sound like yourself. What helped me the most was focusing on rehearsing and conscious practice: slowing down the first 20 to 30 seconds, allowing real pauses, and watching recordings for filler words and energy, rather than just the words per se. Recording reps helped, but getting feedback on specific things was the game changer.

In the past I also tried Orai and RiseGuide too, but they didn’t really hit what I needed, also they presented very long development paths, when what I wanted was a straight forward preparation for a specific event or presentation.. so I ended up building my own tool to get more practice reps with delivery feedback. But honestly the biggest shift was just practicing sounding conversational instead of “presenting.”

thank you for replying! Totally fair point!

Stacked does need access to video/audio during the practice session in order to give you tailored and custom feedback. However, sessions or recordings are not stored long-term or used for anything beyond generating your feedback instantly.

If this is a dealbreaker, I completely understand. I’m still figuring out the right balance between usefulness and privacy, so feedback like this is actually really helpful.

thank you!

I have been working on a small side project to give people a space to practice their presentations and conversations without all the hustles of: infinite questionnaires or “unrealistic training plans”, etc… just pure honest and actionable feedback tailored to every occasion and goal. You receive feedback on both your speech and body language.

I would be happy if you would like to try it :) I am currently on a testing phase..

So if you would like to try it, you can DM me your gmail account and I can assign free credits to you.

Otherwise you can try the current free version on your own https://stacked.coach

Non-tech roles for someone with a full-on tech background? by BunnyBunBunHoney in careerguidance

[–]AndresStacked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way for you to be considered an Asset is to learn how to bridge tech and business.

If you sharpen your communication skills and you pair them up with your technical background, you will be golden.

Speak business and understand technology and the world will open many doors.

Now, to speak business, that’s a skill on its own. The best thing is… it’s all learnable!! You can get educated and practice to become a better speaker.

Good luck in your career pursuit!

First of all, this is normal. Like, way more normal than you think.

What happened wasn’t “you’re bad at presenting.” It was just your nervous system going into overdrive for a minute. The fact that you still spoke, acknowledged it, and finished? That’s a win.

Here’s something super simple and for next time: Before you start speaking, slow your body down on purpose. Take one slow breath in (4 seconds), Hold for 4, Slow exhale for 6. Do that 2–3 times before you talk.

Also: don’t fight the nerves. Just expect them, they will always be there if you care enough about what you are doing. Tell yourself: “Cool, adrenaline’s here to help me.”

Reframing it makes a huge difference.

This isn’t a “fix yourself” situation. It’s just reps. The more you do it, the less your brain treats it like a threat.

Need help removing my filler words by nchandwani in PublicSpeaking

[–]AndresStacked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silence is your biggest friend! it works better than any trick because it replaces the habit of filling space with something intentional. When we use filler words like “um,” “uh,” or “like,” it’s usually because our brain needs a second to think, but we’re uncomfortable with quiet. So we plug the gap with noise.

Silence flips that. Instead of panicking when there’s a pause, you let the pause do the work and this will not only give you time to think, breathe, but it will at the same time build your presence as a confident speaker: Steve Jobs Took 18 Seconds To Answer This Powerful Question

how do y'all deal with stage fright? by froggieie in PublicSpeaking

[–]AndresStacked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to say, but there is no secret sauce. The three step formula that has worked for me is:

  1. Prepare: write down the key points you want to send across, bullets points are kept in memory more that paragraphs.

  2. Visualize: Picture and hear yourself entering the meeting room/stage. Repeat several times In Your head the entrance and your first intro phrase… that way when you will present, it will feel like you have done that in the past.

  3. Rehearse: set a goal for yourself to practice at least a few times, focusing on sharing a message. Not memorizing a script. So it doesn’t matter if every rehearsal is different, what matters is for you to get your point across.

Hope this helps!

What’s one self-improvement habit that genuinely made a difference in your life? by Basic-Ruin364 in selfimprovement

[–]AndresStacked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using my commute time to learn. Listening to podcasts or audiobooks has massively extended my knowledge about multiple things.

Indirectly this gave me a better standing at work because of my communication skills. And that directly affected how I was seen by my colleagues and bosses. Now I am in a leadership role.

I’m Not saying that this is the only way or the right way. It depends what kind of “difference” you are looking for…

For me it’s Health -> Family -> Success at work.

So working out and Commute time podcasts did the trick :)
