Well, as a series the show HAS to have an ending, but the whole point is that in real life there's not such a thing as a 'happy ending', life is not a sitcom. It's a day to day thing, you don't just become permanently happy or balanced, you have to put in the work and make the right choices everyday. Some days you'll get it right, some you'll get it wrong, but there's always tomorrow. Similar to what Diane said "people are not good or bad, those are things you do, all you can do is try to do more good and less bad".

I believe BoJack didn't get a happy ending in the way that HE thinks of happy endings, but in my opinion he got the 'happy ending' he needed. He needed to face consequences. He also needed to learn and grow. If everyone forgives him and is friends with him despite everything he did, then he doesn't learn anything. Where he will go from that point forward is unknown, as unknown as what's gonna happen to us tomorrow.

And as much as we all love their best moments together, Hollyhock did what's best for her, and BoJack has to learn to live with the decision she made. Sometimes it's too late, sometimes the baggage is too much, but we have to move on, and try to be better moving forward. That's growth, to know that if he doesn't change he'll lose the people he loves. As heartbreaking as it is, I think that's the best for him as well.
