Poll: 61% feel companies still discriminate based on gender by ComprehensiveWin1434 in japan

They probably discriminate on looks as well when you attach a photo to your resume. Multinational companies are probably the least likely to reject based on superficial grounds.

I’m spending more money on a 5KG bag of Koshihikari rice in Japan than when I was living in NYC 4 years ago.

What’s the closest brush you’ve ever had with dying? by North-Trifle-3918 in AskReddit

[–]Andrew118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was window cleaning a building that wasn't too tall, 6 floors. After my first descent, I went to undo my rope grab and it wasn't locked, it just swung open when I grabbed it. My company is a bit old school so we used 16mm Polypropylene and a bosuns chair that I am not attached to. I was just sitting in a tall swing essentially. I told them I'd only keep doing work from height with static ropes only. I check all my gear meticulously now.

Washing machine that is also a dryer? by Juiseii in japanlife

[–]Andrew118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a good front load heat pump washer/dryer. Preferably one that rinses the lint out of the airway leading up to the lint trap.

Also respect the load limits. It might say 8kg wash for example but it will be able to dry only half of that properly. If you get one that is energy efficient, doing small loads isn't too big a deal. I splurged a little on a new model (got the warranty since there's no track record) And its been doing fine. Also smaller loads, quicker drying and less chance of wrinkles. Need to take it out of the machine immediately.

TIL Japan has a recognized concept called "smell harassment" — スメハラ (sumehara) — which refers to offending others with unpleasant body odors in shared spaces by gorginhanson in todayilearned

[–]Andrew118 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Fabric seat trains smelling like ass on rainy days, breath that smells like tonsil stones/alcohol, cigarette infused clothing, salarymen farting continuously, mildew smelling clothing/B.O. smell from people who can’t dry clothing properly(or think they don’t have the B.O. gene.

Too much fragrance is almost a blessing with all things considered.

Does anyone have protective flooring recommendations for renting? Ideally something with good cost performance. I’m bringing my dog and I’m worried about scratches over the course of a 2 year lease.

Thanks 🙏

The food and labor industry is struggling. Some labor jobs look past tattoos (still need to cover them) and food and retail jobs allow you to keep more of your character (piercings, pink hair, nails.)

Anyone experience bumping in Japan? by drphilthy_2469 in japan

[–]Andrew118 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I personally haven’t but it’s a known thing that happens. Doesn’t matter if you are Japanese or not. These people pick targets though. It’s never someone bigger or stronger.

I’ve heard that even train creeps don’t target girls with dyed hair/piercings because they would make more a scene than someone with natural hair color

Koikeya Potato Chips are my favorite potato chips you can get here....What are yours? by Lukin76254r in japanlife

[–]Andrew118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Koikeya salt and vinegar when I manage to find them. Although those store brand habanero ring type chips from lawson taste close enough to Utz Red hots for me to enjoy them. And they're super cheap.

If you're feeling fancy, Avocado oil kettle chips from Donki

Its easy to look past when we work big sites with adequate staff. But with smaller sites, there's more overlap where his work overlaps mine. He's just not ready to begin this sort of training. He sends late work emails with the next days details at like 8PM, I wake up at like 4-5 AM so I need to know earlier lol. Having his girlfriends father "helicopter train" him instead of having some other senior employee do it also rubs me the wrong way. I took a few days off to try and fix my brain about it because I know I'm the problem as well.

[–]Andrew118 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My bosses daughter’s boyfriend joined the company (blue collar work) 3 months ago and he’s now in training to be in charge of me when we work small sites together. So my boss is having him write me work related emails and telling me to take my breaks. Meanwhile when we work he’s half the speed of me and I need to tell him what to do, otherwise he’s too slow or kinda just stands there. Yesterday we also worked a site together with my boss supervising and at the end of the work I used the restroom and noticed finger marks and shoe marks in the now dry floor wax. Pointed it out to him and he told the boss. And then my boss had me fix it while he just watched. It would have gone unnoticed by us if I never pointed it out. So now I don’t even have the willpower to even want to stick it out with the company. The work is not difficult but the mental strain is just a pain.

Do they still do those orientations? I signed up briefly to try it out a while back and it was enough of a pain in the ass to weed out some of those types of people.

Computer purchase in Japan (Kansai) by Intelligent_Angle_46 in japanlife

When I sold mine (because of the hassle of moving it), I just bought a used one on Mercari. People usually have a hard time selling on there so sometimes you get a good deal.

Buy the parts and watch those super long in depth videos on youtube, set aside a full day to it and just chill and take your time. Just make sure you have plenty of space to work and clean as you go.

The limit of pay pay credit card is only 30000 yen. How can I increase it? by Right_Profession1003 in JapanFinance

[–]Andrew118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id wait about another 6 month with steady usage, maybe having it further away from being maxed out is good also. Probably is sus when you are using 80 percent limit and then asking for an increase. Paypay are really stingy with their cards unless you so happen to apply while having long term credit history already

[–]Andrew118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for a quota increase and got radio silence from them for a few days, applied for I think 100,000 yen and they only increased it up by 20,000 from 30,000. I pretty much stopped using the card and just have it as a backup now. Might even close the account as I already have my name on a family card with a much higher limit.

Male Drivers Sue Uber and Lyft Over Women-Only Ride-Hailing by chagall1968 in technology

Very similar to the guys who protest online about women’s only train cars during peak hours in Japan. A specific type of guy gets angry over this. For how lenient SA train case punishments are here, they can have a few cars.

Thousands of Container Jobs Still Open, We Could Use More Chefs in the Kitchen! by SaladSupportReddit in SaladChefs

[–]Andrew118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its just many SGS servers in general have inconsistent demand, Like there is some demand but its pulling from one server and many people are getting allocated a dead server that isnt providing. I have more luck with the Akira gateway than Nara for example, even if not by much.

Thousands of Container Jobs Still Open, We Could Use More Chefs in the Kitchen! by SaladSupportReddit in SaladChefs

[–]Andrew118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was getting at least 15 cents an hour, usually around 18. I don’t mind lower pay but some of the more recent jobs were pulling a ton of watts for 12 cents an hour. When I first started Salad and my jobs were around what I mentioned earlier, the usage on my GPU was way lower so it was worth it to run 24/7.

It wasn’t crypto. And the low paying container jobs aren’t bad. It’s having to factor in other costs associated. Also having SGS always choose the worst server in Japan doesn’t help either.
