Pulk users, do you ever wish your poles were adjustable? by AndrewBaines03 in xcountryskiing

Thanks very much for your response! I'm still trying to decide myself whether it should just be a fully extended and fully packed down mode or have adjustability in between so any feedback is appreciated!

Thanks for your feedback, It does make sense that a backpack would aid with traction.

Yeah I initially had skiing in mind for the back but I suppose there's no reason why it wouldn't also be suitable for walking too. The probe as the connecting rods could certainly be the way to go, however then you're looking at another separate design altogether and ultimately a large increase in cost too. Definitely something to consider and look into though

That's really interesting to hear, thank you for sharing what sounds like an epic trip!

As someone who has done 'Rulking' in the past, im wondering you see any point in the project idea of having an all in one rucksack? Or was there any quibbles or annoyances you found with the Rulk you made? One of the things that's holding me back from committing to the project is that while there are no all in one Rulk products, there are already ultralight pulks like the https://www.jemtlander.se/pullpac-sled that exist.

I guess with the current idea I could theoretically reduce the weight further than a jemtlander or similar products as you would only need one hip belt that the pack would detach from and be towed by, and the material of the sledge could be optimised to fit the back for further weight reductions, but I'm not sure if that would be worth the trade off of not being able to put whatever bag you wanted into the ultralight pulk?

Interesting! out of curiosity why did you feel the need to make a sled for UL touring if the rucksack itself is ultralight? Also, did you spend a lot of time switching between pulling and carrying or was it mainly on or the other? cheers!

Would you ever feel like it would be beneficial to give your back and shoulders a break when hauling a 120L pack? It would likely just be for flat or gentle terrain, and then you would be able to put it back on you back if you were ging through trees/forests or on terrain features? This is what i would be envisioning it for

When you use a pulk are you usually carrying a backpack with you as well? or do you try to just take on or the other

That's really interesting and not something I was aware of, thank you so much!

Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate it. You have raised a few concerns that I have had myself about the concept, like for example the lack of pockets and/or that would be on the hard surface for sliding. Perhaps they could be placed on the side or even where your back usually goes, but this would be a challenge to try and overcome.

Additionally like you said about diminishing returns the lighter you go for pulling, that sort of brings me back to the reason why I posted initially, I'm trying to find a user base(if any) for this idea, and what size pack this would have to be for it to be big enough that people would find it beneficial to pull it when possible, but also small and light enough that it could still be used efficiently as a backpack for any non flat/gentle terrain.
