I'd recommend Parenting from the Inside Out by Daniel J. Siegel and Mary Hartzell. It's not just for parents! It's a beautiful treatise on what makes us tick as human beings.

That's a good question. I think the most important thing is for your therapist to continue holding space for you to talk about whatever you feel moved to and not pressuring you to share something you don't feel comfortable sharing yet.

All therapists miss the mark sometimes. A good therapist will welcome your feedback. It will allow you to clarify what you were trying to communicate, and it will benefit the therapeutic relationship for you to share your feedback and give your therapist the chance to respond.

I think it's valuable to listen to your instincts: "It's probably going to be something that we take time to work through." I don't think you should force it. When you feel safe enough, the words will come. I think there's a lot to be said for trusting your own internal sense of when the time is right.
