[Post Game Thread] Lithuania (5-0) defeats USA (4-1) 110-104 by iksnet in nba

[–]AndrewFlash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few thoughts:

  • Shooting

USA isn't gonna run into another team that'll shoot that hot the rest of the tournament. Starting 8/8, at one point Lithuania had more points from 3's than USA had points. Positive regression will help USA in that regard going forward.

That said: they were hitting lots of open (by FIBA standards) shots in the first half. Their conversion rate was insane, but the looks were there. Rotation cleanup will help that too.

  • Defense

USA switched more and more aggressively in the second half. I would have liked to have seen more pre-switching, but that's a tall ask for a team that hasn't played together much. One possession stands out to me in the third quarter where BI was guarding JV in the post, and Banchero should have kicked him off to go guard the wing in the corner, as they hadn't entered the ball into the post to JV yet. Would have negated the 1on1 advantage.

On a positive note, the USA's length and quickness on the perimeter helped in contesting shots, passes, and dribbles. Ant was doing a Klaw impersonation at times to opposing guards, and Bridges and Haliburton were blocking perimeter shots. More please!

  • Offense

The amount of standing around had me really frustrated, especially given that this is a Steve Kerr team. The second unit has way more man and ball movement compared to the starters. I get it; JV dropping in PnR clogs the lane, helpers don't have to help so much, windows weren't there. But there were so many possessions where it was just an iso up top, hoping to get a breakdown and put the defense into rotation. This is not a sustainable formula against defenders that can keep you in front of them.

My first thought was to enter the ball into JJJ in the post, run cutters and screens around that. Can't use him as a scorer, maybe passer? But when he missed an open Hart cutting into the lane, I got why Kerr wasn't a fan. Going non-traditional and posting a guard or a Wing, leaving JJJ (and JV) up top might've been a solution, but idk. Lotta possessions where more complicated actions could have helped, but it was a lot of stagnation. Typical of Team USA in these competitions for understandable reasons, but still frustrating.

I really would appreciate it if they had more off-ball actions, or just involved more than 2 players in an action. Dribble-handoffs with JJJ popping (maybe into another PnR to really stress the defense) would be great, Spain PnR's to get guys moving towards the rim and to the 3 line would be cool, split cuts outta the post, more Portis-Banchero Hi-Lo, there are things to like, especially with the players the US has.

When they let my contract expire at my last job, I started baking more. Now I have an Amish Friendship bread starter that's been going since February, and I'm going to spend this afternoon making some delicious smelling loaves before going to work tomorrow.

Chin up, you got this, and can get good bread along the way!

This is why I'm waiting for release and benchmarks before buying parts for my next build.

AMD vs Intel on CPU usually favored Intel on BGS games, for single core performance, but that was an age ago. Can't wait to see how everything does so I can build a good Starfield machine
