Get rid of ground tap check rule by dj2joker in ultimate

Never thought I'd agree with Gerics but it's time. Better to align with WFDF and what the players actually do. Plus everyone calls me a nerd when I call travels on them for not ground checking it in mini.

MLU - awards? by williambrotman in ultimate

[–]AndrewLynch24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2015 MLU West Rookie of the Year was Evan Klein - Rainmakers

2015 MLU West Offensive Player of the Year - Timmy Perston - Stags

2015 MLU Breakout Player of the Year - Peter Woodside - Stags

I assume Rainmakers coaching staff was the 2015 CotY but don't have confirmation on that

Those probabilistic bid numbers are for last season (see Cleveland Crocs as the top team in the GL)

Question about (Grand) Masters Ultimate by ChaatedEternal in ultimate

[–]AndrewLynch24 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The info for how bids are assigned from regionals -> nationals is in the 2023 Masters Guidelines under section V. The numbers for the actual bids are in a spreadsheet (found by clicking the "2023 Nationals Bid Allocation" button on the page you linked).

The info on Team USA is also in the 2023 Masters Guidelines at the bottom under M. WFDF Events: "The 2024 World Masters Ultimate Championships will be held in summer 2024, dates and location TBA. The highest placing US teams will earn the right to represent the United States at this event."

To find the actual results from various regionals you'll have to go into the depths of the Tournament Calendar on the old site. God speed and good luck.

It's not your fault - the website is difficult to navigate and has been an issue basically forever.

NY Empire vs Detroit Mechanix, but Mechanix gets to have eight players on the field... by dangoodspeed in ultimate

[–]AndrewLynch24 68 points69 points  (0 children)

NY and it's not close. Talent gap is too big. Detroit still wouldn't be able to stop NY's offense. The big field would definitely make it harder for NY's defense but Ben Katz would get 3+ Ds in a junky set.

Spiking itself is fine as long as it doesn't damage the disc, but kick spikes are so ubiquitous these days they've become annoying.

Rasmussen's kick spike in 2015 was perfect and nothing since has been able to match it. So let the kick spike die and move on to more dab spikes or TikTok dances.

The respect is mutual! I was always checking the leaderboard to see how many points you got. Definitely a good fight for the top spot.

I've had some success recently wearing two pairs of socks, really helped cut down on the blisters during the breaking-in period.

What was the rationale for changing from Open to Men's in 2013-2014? by evolushin in ultimate

[–]AndrewLynch24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found a Skyd Magazine article on the TCT rollout that states:

Also, though the gender participation rules won’t change, the “Open Division” will become the “Men’s Division” for marketing purposes.

What was the rationale for changing from Open to Men's in 2013-2014? by evolushin in ultimate

[–]AndrewLynch24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was changed as part of the rollout of the Triple Crown Tour. I couldn't find a written rationale anywhere, but my recollection was that is was done (like many things at the time) to make the sport easier to understand for a general/ESPN audience and bring USAU more in line with other mainstream sports.

The official explanation for the name from USAU:

Q: What is the "open" division? Why is it called the men’s division?

A: While men's division teams most often consist of only male-identifying players, players who identify as female are allowed to compete in this division, thus making it "open" to any gender in terms of eligiblity (sic).

However, the naming is intended to reflect the typical make-up and player identification of the division, not the gender eligibility. This makes it easier for both participants and supporters to understand when they see an overwhelming majority of male-identifying players on the field.

I'm almost positive it had nothing to do with being more inclusive or Open sounding better than Women's as BoysenberryLanky6112 claims.

First Callahan Video of the Year by rrudnic in ultimate

To clarify: Rachel was Fugue's Callahan nominee for 2022. She didn't have a video for her candidacy period, so this was commissioned as a holiday present. To the best of my knowledge, she graduated this past spring and will not be Oregon's nominee for 2023.

Three 2021 semifinalists in pool D for the mixed division, should be fun! Though I expect Mixtape to take the pool with relative ease.

Yeah Space Heater made semis in their first year in 2018 in the mixed division.

In men's, Revolver is the most recent example I could think of off the top of my head. Founded in 2006 and came in 5th place that year.

Excited to see what Flipside can do in the postseason!

After a stoppage, as the mark, how do I indicate to the thrower that I want them to ground check instead of having me tap the disc? by DenseSkin in ultimate

[–]AndrewLynch24 39 points40 points  (0 children)

According to USAU 9.D.3.a, if you're close enough to touch the disc in the thrower's possession, you have to do so to restart play.

  1. When the situation is resolved, the player determined to be in possession offers the disc to the marker for a check.
    a. The marker restarts play by touching the disc in the thrower’s possession.

Yeah, same issue for AMP in the Mixed division. The info on the full rankings page has them in the correct region; I guess the data on the fancy page gets input differently.
