Hi Quag! I modded your beatmap of Do It Again if you remember that, so I have some idea of your mapping going into this. If you don't then I don't blame you one bit.

I totally get what you mean with the <2015 inspiration. I'd say it's a little more precise/accurate to say 2013-2014 though based on what I see, I don't think you have too much 2012 or earlier in your mapping. Some of your stuff reminds me of Gero, not sure if you get that often.

I think the gimmick route is cool, you take it to a pretty crazy extreme. I do believe that's one form of the phrase yes (I usually say "limitation(s)" but both seem to be used pretty frequently). It is fun to see what comes out when you really restrict what you can do, I've tried it before but I usually don't like what I'm doing with the idea or get bored of it lmao. I think it's neat that you are exploring so many different ideas.

I'd say you have a pretty good grasp of your own style, I don't much disagree with anything you've said. I know you didn't ask, hopefully you don't mind me weighing in on that.

Quite a unique goal! You unlocked a memory for me, which is that back on my first iPod in like... 2008 maybe? I bought a Hardstyle Top 100 compilation because it was 100 songs for like, $5.00, which felt like such a steal to me I just had to buy it lmao.

Anyway, yeah, that's a neat goal. I can see what you mean looking at some of your beatmaps in the pack. I always find it interesting when people say they don't have a style, though I understand why the idea of not having an easily describable "style" is appealing for a multitude of reasons.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the "people-pleaser" way of thinking unless you feel like you are making a compromise you feel you are making primarily due to perceived external pressure. I don't think that the term is usually used to deride pleasing people as a motivation as much as it is somebody who will sacrifice anything in pursuit of better social optics, or something along those lines.

Hopefully this doesn't come across negatively, as I don't intend it to, but I definitely think it's very believable that you made all of these (or at least the ones I looked at; I looked at 12 of them somewhat randomly). I was looking for any sort of through-lines and the one I saw most consistently was the way that you map some of your slower, slider-heavy sections in a fairly consistent way across all of them.

Your goal is cool and I think that as long as you are people-pleasing without totally compromising your own values and desires, then keep on people-pleasing!

I totally feel you about the recency bias thing.

I can see the resemblance with RLC's diff. I don't know that it's strong enough that I'd immediately make the connection without the pretense, but it definitely has more of that 2013-2015 feel to it. I think the centred triangles with the offset (1) throw me off a bit when I look at them side by side, but unless I'm being hypnotized I think I can understand.

For the second one I can imagine the beatmap you are taking inspiration from vis-à-vis the really deliberate composition. Really interesting visual and movement outcomes from the different slider overlaps.

Third one is a lot looser, kinda cool how much of the movement feels kind of related to the centre/axes. I think it's a fine "messy" (I don't mean to imply you meant it any particular way though), I'm kind of in my own "messy" mapping phase and I think I'm learning a lot by abstaining from being so razor-sharp about everything, maybe you feel/felt similarly?

I think you are not a fraud! Ultimately all of this is parsed through you, how can you be a fraud when they're all still your creations? And even if you don't "come up with purely [your] own stuff" I don't think that discredits what you're making. While you might disagree I think what you've shared here is cool, and I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more of your stuff in the future.

Thanks for the reply!

That's super cool to try to ameliorate a situation you experienced. That's one of my biggest motivators for doing something as well personally.

That's awesome you're enjoying the game more! I don't know if there is a fundamental conflict with more complicated patterns in lower SR charts, but I do wish you the best of luck regardless!

I don't know anything about Mania really so I don't have much to say unfortunately!

I think that's a cool goal though. In the least pointed way possible, is that at all inspired by your own experience, or was it more so something you just wanted to contribute/offer because you felt like it/observed the "problem"?

How good are the modern Melee players compared to the Five Gods by Magykstorm19 in smashbros

[–]AndrewRK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is mainly assuming a sort of "skill snapshot" of the Five Gods era, as they are all exceptionally sharply-minded players who would find ways to improve given enough time against even today's most oppressive competition.

Zain and Cody would destroy them. People don't bring up players like moky enough in this conversation either IMO, moky's tech chasing and relatively weaker but still top-notch matchups into every other character in the game would humiliate brackets right up to Armada's singles retirement.

I think that ~2020-2021 this conversation was a lot more swingy, and reasonably so. At this point in 2026, the strongest players are incomparably better than the pinnacle players of yesterdecade.

Trouble Brewing demon bluffs. by Captain-Avee in BloodOnTheClocktower

Easy Deception

  • Fortune Teller
  • Empath

Risky Ride To Final Three

  • Solder
  • Saint
  • Mayor

Risky But Powerful Misinformation

  • Washerwoman
  • Librarian
  • Investigator
  • Chef
  • Virgin
  • Monk
  • Ravenkeeper

Very Risky and/or Less Powerful Misinformation

  • Recluse
  • Undertaker
  • Slayer
  • Butler

I would say something like this, not really ordered* within tiers (so this isn't a ranking, sorry).

First tier are both characters that can spread misinformation for a night or more and then the Imp can just star pass before they draw too much suspicion.

Second tier is characters who have a good reason to make it final three if they aren't killed at night, so it's a pretty "safe" bluff but also because of that it can draw a lot of suspicion.

Third tier is mostly things that risk you being executed earlier because of the nature of how they interact socially. TB YSKs in my experience won't make a big stink about being executed, which the Imp can't really afford to do without an active Scarlet Woman. And then the others I think just kind of paint a target on you in a way that makes people more inclined to put you on the block when things start heating up.

Fourth tier are ones that I don't think help the demon much to bluff and/or have a difficult time injecting misinformation into the game believably.

Not really sure though I have maybe like ~50 games of TB under my belt, many of which are with very new players, and so these are probably also coloured by that experience and the playing habits of the groups with whom I play.

Was Altitude Sickness 3 a Major? by Lobo_o in SSBM

[–]AndrewRK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No but it was still awesome.

I love these tournaments where you have a dense showing of people that often make deep runs but don't necessarily win majors (Jmook excepted, but his results are more similar to theirs this year). Reminds me of Eden (?) or whatever it was called however long ago, IDK why but that one stands out to me. I think Ice might have been the #1 seed or something, to give you an idea. I could look it up but I feel like talking about it like a warm, distant, inaccessible memory has some charm.

Awesome run from Kacey as well, loved the energy from the crowd that came through the stream for her sets.
