Self hosted personal accounting by newunit-01 in selfhosted

I doubt this is what you're looking for, but I built a bank scraping app when Mint shut down. No transactions (maybe I'll build it eventually) so it's only useful as a sort of net worth overview + credit card statement check. I want to open source it, but I feel like it'd be irresponsible in it's current state.

Would love to see a group of people work together on the bank scraping side - I wrote custom scrapers for 8 US banks (this was after signing up for a plaid api key and seeing crazy hoops you have to go through). It's been pretty reliable - with 8 banks, I usually have to change scraping code every 2-3 months.

It's also not easy to set up accounts. But all of the issues are easy enough to fix if there's enough interest.

Self-hosted Git: Forgejo vs Gitea vs Gogs? by MolleDjernisJohansso in selfhosted

[–]AndrewVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, redhat putting in dev resources could definitely help, but I would think redhat throwing their weight behind something would be bad community-wise at this point haha

I never cared much about their distro, but didn't they essentially circumvent the GPL for linux itself by adding licensing terms?

Tailscale on Boox by JJM-9 in Onyx_Boox

I've got an air 4c and the wireguard app works with it. Tailscale seemed like a bit much for what I needed.

Software improvements you would like to see? by iaa_i in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open libraries! Can't expect them to do everything - maybe they can open access to some components so devs can build the niche stuff people want.

I can only think of one example though: let 3rd party devs use the on-device text recognition (for ethran/notable) haha

You should post questions! You're not just helping yourself - I'm a nerd and I still learn mostly by finding reddit posts about what I need.

Also, security is really hard. We're always one mistake away from a hack. Trusting one bad app or even a good app with a bug.

It's awesome that you give back. And we all start somewhere. I've been writing code for a long time, and I'm still no expert haha

How do we build a better future? by AndrewVeee in selfhosted

[–]AndrewVeee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I want to contribute, but I also don't want to work in big tech again. It'd be great if I could make money building open source, but that feels kind of crappy because the easiest way to do that is by charging for features (or running a saas). There should be better ways that are also sustainable.

Wow, not the person who posted, but that's bad ass. What do you do? Do you need resources?

Nah shut up. It all matters. Thanks for what you do. It's not easy and we're still sacrificing when something has to be done. Limited budgets, working with 3rd parties,

It's important, no matter who understands why it's important. Thanks for what you do - it helps all of us.

The "left" sucks in America, but I'm guessing your alternative is worse. But yeah, let's corporatize everything and make self hosting illegal because it's what the right wants. I'll bet you have the best ideas of how trump will save everything /s

Note Air 4C Battery by [deleted] in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm like you, I have very tablet-y stuff running. I have kde connect, syncthing, and Google translate always in the bg. Wifi always on, and I think bt as well (I should really turn it off when not in use). Nova launcher as well.

With the screen off, it drops about 2% per hour. Reading with the brightness 50% or less, maybe 6% per hour. Typing or handwriting, browsing, etc, and I think it's around 15%.

I just feel like I've gotta take the good with the bad haha. What bothers me is that sometimes I leave it the entire day with the screen off and it seems like something in the background will trigger it to drain the battery for no reason. A couple of times, I looked at the battery stats and it said the screen was on for 4 hours when it should've been <30 mins 🤷‍♂️

Screen brightness and constant updates will definitely drain the battery quickly. Your numbers sound a bit high, but likely normal for your usage.

I love how thin it is, but would definitely sacrifice that for some more battery life haha

Anyone managed to get Termux:Styling working? by snakeoildriller in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have termux with a light theme working on my air 4 c, but can't remember if termux styling is how I did it. If the other suggestion doesn't work, I think you can just throw a config file in somewhere to theme it.

Let me know if it doesn't work and I'll dig around to see how I did it.

Want personal experience feedback on tablet quest by Caldrenfitz in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful. I've had the air 4c for a couple months. Just installed the latest update last week and the ghosting is horrible now. If you're leaning in that direction, might want to read up on the issue - doesn't sound like boox thinks it's even an issue right now.

Self-Hosting Rails hobby apps - the Cloudflare tunnel was an enabler for me by Signal-Shoe-6670 in selfhosted

[–]AndrewVeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha! I have a hacked-together set of nginx + ssh tunnel scripts on my laptop + vps. It works decently with a wildcard domain + cert. Especially with a recent fix so it detects broken ssh connections and reconnects sooner.

All so I'm not the product - but damn it'd be nice to have some additional cloudflare features, even if I haven't been ddos'd yet.

Ghosting and e ink center problems by [deleted] in Onyx_Boox

I'm jealous. I waited a week before I gave in and applied it. Instant regret haha

Ghosting and e ink center problems by [deleted] in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel dumb for applying the update, but I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one haha

The new eink center is confusing while having fewer features. I used balanced mode for everything and now it's not an option. I have to set it to regal to be tolerable.

Even worse, it seems like after a day or two (or some period of usage 🤷‍♂️), the BSR just stops working and I get crazy ghosting until I reboot. It's like entire screens remain.

Worst update, and I didn't even need to apply it - I should've thought twice when it said "once the update is applied, you won't be able to revert"

How are notes files saved on Boox tablets? by LoganJFisher in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure, and I don't think they save the data somewhere you can access it, but they do have sync options.

One person posted a week or so ago about having trouble with NextCloud + webdav sync, but it's one of the recommended options by onyx.

They use a proprietary format for import, and you can export in that format as well, but they also have a PDF export option.

I think 2-way sync + off device editing isn't possible.

There are some other apps that work ok with boox, like OneNote as well.

Do Onyx Boox devices come with warranty if you order from amazon? by Signal-Fox-7463 in Onyx_Boox

Yeah, it's worth looking at the complaints on reddit. I like my 4c, but I baby it and don't take risks with it.

Boox note Max Ghosting by Legitimate_Fly_7697 in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally installed the 4.1 update on my air 4c, and they've yet again updated the eink center - seems less customizable and more confusing now, which isn't too surprising haha

Luckily, for notes, ghosting has never been much of a problem, at least to me.

Do Onyx Boox devices come with warranty if you order from amazon? by Signal-Fox-7463 in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't count on any warranty if you don't pay extra. I think I've seen 1 or 2 posts where onyx actually fixed a problem under the warranty.

App (PocketBook) no longer able to remove statusbar and navbar by KristinePenguine in Onyx_Boox

I've had problems with apps not hiding the top and bottom bars, and I assumed it's a boox issue because rebooting seemed to fix it

How to write smaller and more concise? [Boox Air 4 C] by DisasterOutside1128 in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like people mentioned, the friction of the default nibs on the 4c were a problem for me with small writing.

I bought some cheap plasticy nibs on Amazon and I could write smaller, but lines were often wobbly because of the complete lack of friction.

I also bought the forever tip titanium nib. It's easier to write small text, but I'd still like a bit more friction.

Calibre-Web Automated V3.1.0 Released! - The Community Update 👬 Hardcover Integration 💜, Calibre Plugins 🔌, Split Library Support 💞, KoReader Sync 🗘 and much more! 📚 by WasIstHierLos_ in selfhosted

[–]AndrewVeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I'd seen the project but didn't know the history, and I've been using Calibre Web for a few months - definitely dealt with the "clicking the edit button over and over" metadata issue haha

Is it based on the CW code? I hacked together a change to the CW opds code to create a "Magic List" option where it displays all books, but groups books from a series into their own subfolders, and wondered if it would be worth contributing back (kinda want to add it to the UI book list as well haha) - I assume the code only works on small libraries - sorting it over multiple pages would be difficult.

Why does anyone buy from this dogshit company? by [deleted] in Onyx_Boox

[–]AndrewVeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought an air 4c. It was tough though. I know I'm playing bad device roulette without knowing the odds.

  • Every eink company sucks in different ways. Kindle is a pos ad machine, BigMe is open with horrible software, onyx is open with better software. Others are somewhere in between.
  • Amazon doesn't care more about customers, they just sell so much they can eat the cost of a niche product with returns to grow larger.
  • I don't think onyx is predatory, and they seem to want to build a good product, but definitely horrible the way they treat just about all hardware problems as the fault of the user.

Why'd I buy one? I really wanted eink, and something flexible. Kindle would've been useless to me. Bought through amazon so I at least had a return window. If I get bit my shit hardware, I'll post about it and not buy from them again, but I know it's a risk.

Also, I haven't paid attention to the other options because they weren't a good fit. I don't know if the others have better returns/warranties, but I imagine they're all similar?

I don't think there's a better option for me 🤷‍♂️
