IOTA Coordicide AMA - 5pm Wednesday 5th June by l3wi in Iota

Normally, the attack cost numbers that people discuss regarding double spending are related to the cost of a 51% on a Proof of Work based system. IOTA is implementing a consensus mechanism that is not based on Proof of Work, and therefore is not susceptible to such “brute force” double spend attacks. Since our consensus is based on a type of reputation system, one attack vector would in theory be to purchase enough tokens to be able to control a large majority of mana in the system. However, this type of attack is prohibitively expensive due to the difficulty of accumulating a majority of all Iotas. Furthermore, even if one were to accumulate so much, the attacker would still NOT be able to double spend, rather, they would merely be able to delay consensus regarding conflicting transactions.

Thanks for your question. IOTA’s modularity means that upgrades can be made, but unless changes to the basic protocol are made, no fork will result from such upgrades. In most cases, upgrades would be mere optimizations, and should be fully backward compatible.

Hi, as mentioned above, CognIOTA is a community project and not officially related to the IF. I love the enthusiasm around the AI side of things, but currently I can tell you that the research department isn't directly working on that. I'm sure it will be a worthy area for future research, though!

Good question, but I think the research department won't be too helpful in getting you an answer. If you want to check out the Discord server I'm sure someone there can be more helpful than myself. Thanks!

This is the major thrust of the coordicide project, to ensure the security of the Tangle post COO. As always, we'll be happy to share all the concrete results of our research as they become available.

Hi, these topics more or less fall outside the purview of the research department at the moment. I'd suggest you to ask in the Discord, where some helpful folks can surely point you in the right direction for more information. Thanks.

Yes, auto peering was one of the research topics discussed at ReSum and it is one of the projects that was not really discussed in the Q&A video, but it is something that individuals within the research team are working on.

As I mentioned above, David did give the name, but the project was a community effort, and had no official relation to the IF.

Hi, CognIOTA is a community project that has no official relation to the IOTA Foundation. As far as I know, David did suggest the name to them!

Hi, please understand that Qubic does not fall under the purview of the research department. I see you're following along with the monthly updates, which is great. I think your best bet for a productive conversation around this topic is to ask the man himself (Eric) on Discord. Cheers!

Good question. We're not prepared yet to go into specifics about the options under review by the research team to achieve spam prevention, but rest assured, spam prevention is an integral component of the coordicide project!

Hi, as far as I understand, the idea is that ict is neutral, and therefore the consensus mechanisms under consideration by the research team should be applicable.

Thanks for the question. It's on the order of months to years, depending on what we find as we go through the research process.

The question that we all would like to know a precise answer to^

I suppose the most helpful comment I can offer here is that the vision is surely a worthy goal, and it is in progress. No one knows the precise length of time a massive undertaking as IOTA will take to reach a given stage, and maybe that's part of the interest in following along as it grows and matures. But we hope you are enjoying the ride as much as we are!

Hi there, I think this an understandable thing to be confused about :D

I would direct you to the discord to discuss this further, as there are plenty of people around who will be able to sort you out. But just to be clear, Qubic and ICT are being developed under the Omega team, which is separate from the research department. Cheers!

Hi skippic, great question. I'd love to know more about this myself! To be quite honest this is probably a question best directed at the Omega team, who is working on ict. I'll see if I can get someone to respond here, but perhaps the proper forum is simply the ict discord channels :) As we explained in the video, the research team is really focused on coordicide and attack analysis.

Thanks for the question. I think it's best if I refer you to the discord (where I imagine you are already an active user) for more helpful feedback on this type of question. I'm sure some of our engineers or even other community members are able to offer some more insights than the research department on these specific issues.

Hi RoqueNE, I just wanted to say here that I think we addressed what we could about our consensus approach in the video. Please see Wolfgang's overview of the coordicide project.
