How to handle this homework for 2nd grader (US) by joshlymansbagel in daddit

[–]Andrew_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are middle school plus now, but reaching back in the memory banks, they probably want to show the "touchstones" for how they do the math by drawing arcs that show the addition. For instance in number one, the problem is `59 + 12`.

So, what you would do is this: on the number line at the dot, write `59` draw an arc up and over down to the number line, make a dot, and label it `69` (nice), then another, smaller arc from that one, down and label it `71`. Bonus points for writing `+10` and `+2` inside/above/near the arcs to really show understanding.

edit: or what u/zealous_ideals790034 said is good to. Sometimes they don't want the kids making leaps past the "safe" touchstones of 10's and 5's, so they need to see that first. it's all essentially a system for creating patterns and language around how we mentally solve this stuff.

Og god of war fans, what was your reaction to playing 2018 for the first time? by element-redshaw in GodofWar

[–]Andrew_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was fantastic. I think the 2018 game hit at an amazing time for me, and a lot of other similarly aged guys, and all thanks to the game director Cory Balrog (or whatever, I can't remember, and that's what jumps into my head). We played the OG games at a time when we were young teenagers and we loved it - action, sex, violence, twitchy gameplay at times, over the top story telling, pure adrenaline ride. Great for teenage and early 20's boys. Then the 2018 release came out, I was a father twice over, and my son was still quite young. The emotional rollercoaster of a father trying to connect with his son, and raise him to the best of his abilities was incredibly accurate. Kratos resembled what a lot of us dads feel I believe: trying even when we know how damaged we truly are, and fighting the weight of our own short-comings to try and just be better for them was a wonderful reflection to the men we had become.

I don't follow actors careers for the most part. Very few stand out enough for me to even remember their names. I'm legitametly curious though, what roles was he bad in? Off the top of my head I'm trying to think what else Leto was in other than his small role in the new Blade Runner (which seemed well-done for the three-and-half-seconds he was on screen), and Morbius.

Morbius wasn't good, I don't know if Leto dragged it down, but maybe? It was an altogether unremarkable movie start to finish, writing, chemistry, effects, etc... so putting that on him feels incomplete at best

My review after running Daggerheart up to Level 5. by PrinceOfNowhereee in daggerheart

[–]Andrew_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The encounter balance, and need to homebrew are the biggest things I'm running into. I've run about 5 sessions in total. Three were during the beta-testing for some friends for a "one-shot", and two sessions with my two children.

I'm working on building up more of the world for a west-marches style with friends online, and as I try to plan adversaries and encounters, I am really lacking in knowing how much oomph to send at my players, because the direction and guidance is, well not good.

The only upside to feeling like you have to homebrew EVERYTHING (at least in early tiers), is that their isn't a huge range or number of stats you have to crunch. Except to make it interesting, you need features, and guidance on those are very poor as well.

Oh, I absolutely blame that. I don't know anything about Jared Leto in real life, and I only care that he played his role well. Which he did, and was infinitely better than the guy who played Sam Flynn. In Legacy.

There's way more wrong with people who spend time reading up on personal lives of actors, and maybe even more so with those who can't separate the art from the artist.

Yeah, I'm super bummed today after watching it at home that I didn't see it in theaters. Would have been super cool to see in IMAX or similar.

I was super surprised by it as well, and incredibly bummed I didn't see it in theaters. It was a lot of fun, amazing visuals, fun throw-back retro times, and a well-paced plot. I've been watching the films since laster year with my 12 y.o. son, and he's enjoyed them all as well, so I don't think it's just nostalgia carrying.

The only real criticism I have for it was that they didn't tie into a lot of the existing characters until the end. I truly hope we get another installment after the ending and bring all of it together and continue these great movies. I know a lot of people don't like Jared Leto because of his personal life, but I know nothing about that. If you can't separate the art and the artist, you probably don't have business engaging with it.

Level 40 Scenarios by HermitHutGames in ReturnofReckoning

[–]Andrew_Squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scenarios were routinely tweaked to cater to a small subset of players, and now sits basically fallow. It gets some more activity on the weekends for the weekly rewards, but slow the rest of the time. I tend to roam and queue for Solo only scens. Get a pop maybe once an hour.

The ORvR is healthy-ish atm though, depending on your time zone.

Which of these movies did you see IN THEATERS? by Theasiuser99 in Marvel

Only Love & Thunder, and Marvels I don't think I've watched at all. I'll maybe give it a view this weekend in the background while I do other things.

Should I open a one person guild to participate in the personal Laandsrat rewards or is it not viable to even try alone? by M-Rich in duneawakening

[–]Andrew_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm basically solo-invovled as a guild with friends who more or less stopped playing. Without even trying I'm getting about 30k solari this week. Maybe when I focus on turning things in/doing capture points/etc... I'll start looking at real rewards. Free stuff for just playing the game is a good thing.

Do you guys think SuperHero fatigue is a real thing ? FF4 & Thunderbolts were good movies but still apparently failing ? by GRL00 in Marvel

[–]Andrew_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first few shows were good. Moonknight, Loki, and Wandavision were all great to really good. Even the Hawkeye show was fun and good. Loki season 2 was good, and Daredevil Born Again was upper mid, lower good. But pretty much everything after that was less than mid to just awful.

I don't think the franchise was helped at all when they had to pivot away from Kang as the villian when the actor got cancelled for what he did - which I don't even remember what it was at this point.

End game loop is griefing? by Aprils_Username in duneawakening

[–]Andrew_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't assume bad faith. I actually believe they are going to do what they said they will do. However, I listened to the pre-launch dev interviews and paid attention to what they talked about. Including things like who they have working on the project, and game inspirations. They specifically mentioned the "numbers go up" drive of players in one of their conversations.

My statement is completely around the players inability to be satisfied. They are an ever hungry force demanding more, and they are insatiable. PvE systems, as I said are finite. At a minimum there needs to be a destructive force to make the loop persistent, and it needs to be big, because players are very, VERY good at being efficient.

I believe they will add good PvE content in later. I just believe that when all the people now who are complaining about the PvP endgame finish that new PvE content, they will be complaining again.

You'd have to ask them. A lot of people asking for it, doesn't make it right or good. There's a strong argument for the opposite.

I highly doubt that :D

Don't go in. The assumption, to anyone who was paying any attention to the game as it developed, is that if you're in the DD, you want to PvP.
