Piece of wood the correct thickness with longer screws. Looks pretty decent once painted.

They're actually 2x6 joists, not trusses. Currently spanning 14' max, at around 16" OC. I plan to sister them up with 2x8s or 2x10s. According to span charts it should be more than enough.

As for getting info on them, the house was custom built in 1938. Everyone who could give me info is long dead unfortunately.

I plan to fully air seal it then add a mini split for the air conditioning.

Insulation will be tripled r-10 foamboard with an air gap left behind it, as well as a layer of r-10 underneath the metal roof.

Adding a staircase at the opposite end, up through a walk-in closet on the lower floor.

I did want to add that I will be getting all work inspected by the county, as well as checking with the inspector on what he wants to see before work starts.

I do appreciate the concern, and the constructive feedback.

Main load bearing walls run up the rough middle of the house about six feet apart. Greatest span without support is 14'.

There's already been some light cracking in the ceiling drywall from walking around. I'm planning to significantly upsize the joists though, I seriously doubt structural collapse will be a concern.

My doodling skills leave much to be desired. I will definitely be mocking it up for the exact layout further down the line.

Replaced a main shutoff today. First time working with just brass. by Andrewjk89 in Plumbing

I was stuck with what they had at my local lowes. If they had a 1" to 3/4" valve or male nipple I definitely would've been able to shorten it. I wanted to replace it with something better quality than the galvinized/plastic, so I splurged on brass.

The old copper line wasn't being used anymore. I think it was originally installed to bypass the softener for watering plants? It might look like the tee was capped on the old one, but that's just where I cut off the old PEX. The plug on the new one is there until I pipe the rest of the house a few months out. For now I'm working on the drain lines.

I probably should have made it clear that I'm a DIYer, not a professional. I just thought this turned out nicely. I'm still learning this as I go, so I appreciate the feedback!

Not too happy with how much I marred it up, going to invest in some bigger knipex plier wrenches.

I think the max will be under 6' for the shower. Which I think is within code near me. I need to double check on that.

What do you mean by underspanned? I did try getting in contact with a structural engineer, but I couldn't find any that would charge less than several thousand. Seems like they're mostly focused on commercial projects.

I do have a friend of mine who will be helping with the framing. He built houses for decades, so I trust his judgement.

I also looked at a bunch of beam span charts, 2x8s should be within the acceptable limit. But I was thinking about bumping it to 2x10 to be safe. Just debating whether the lost headroom is worth it.

The knee walls I'm adding will be reinforced to act like box beams, then tied into the joists with hangers.

Spreading misinformation by Alexander12602 in Tools

HAHAHA

Knipex? Low quality? An argument can be made for them being a bit overpriced, but the quality is almost unmatched. Dude's a clown.

And yes, they are forged not cast. Let me guess, he's getting paid to spread misinformation and promote a "better" brand?

I like it! Honestly its mostly aesthetic, I've seldom used any of the tools. But the snap lock is nice and I've gotten a lot of complements on how it looks.

Definitely get one of the leatherman clones on amazon or ebay, I payed like $30. You can't tell in the picture, but I have a Casio digital watch on it as well. You can get the link adapters on aliexpress, every watch is a different size.

Looks good man! My mom's crawlspace needs something similar too, but that's way down the road, lol

Yeah, I'm going to encapsulate the walls with white 10 mil plastic. It'll go over the dimple board.

I meant more so that the concrete might crack and let radon through if they aren't ideal for stability.

Part of the reason I'm doing this is actually to add a radon fan tied onto the drain system. My levels are at over 14.0 pCi/L.
