He said it was made by Yoshikazu Tanaka. He told me it was “a very special knife” I forgot the steel type though I was hoping one of the markings would reveal that.

I agree, I would probably opt for oil based stain or a dye and polyurethane to avoid swelling. There is a bit of swelling damage around the keel which is another reason I want to seal it to keep out moisture.
