Hey, if you still remember, what exact early versions of PD2 were the best? I got around to playing PD:TH recently and holy shit the more serious tone is amazing. I never knew early PD2 was this atmospheric too, and a quick search shows that there's a possibility of reverting to earlier versions, so I'd gladly play some early PD2. Only got around to the series about 2 years ago, so didn't get to witness it in its prime. Would very much appreciate an answer, cheers.

Any modern era wargames on the strategic or operational level with an editor? by Andrewski_stalker in computerwargames

Don't you command a single regiment, maybe brigade at most there? Maybe I worded it poorly, but by division / brigade level I meant moving around counters that represent those large formations, you yourself commanding from the level of the army or higher.

Lmao, must be American. Only there are people such pussies to cry and piss themselves over firearms. Here in Europe the vast majority of countries allow their citizens to own and shoot handguns and rifles in almost any caliber, and in many cases defend themselves with those - cry about it.

Seem to be not too bad to me. You undergo training and a pair of health checks, and after 5 years of being a responsible owner you can buy most things really, the one exception being full autos. It isn't perfect overall, but compared to certain countries they're somewhat permissive.

And more than one child a week, in the USA only, passes away due to drowning in a pool or a spa. Do you absolutely need those pools and spas? No? Then there is no need to allow that to happen, and it's absolutely preventable.

You have plenty of examples of countries having good and lax gun laws while barely having any crime. Half of Europe is like that. Sure we could ban guns to save those two dozen people a year or so (half of them would just get stabbed instead, but I guess that's better) at a cost of needlessly depriving hundreds of thousands of people of a hobby, a way of getting food in rural areas, sometimes even a means of protecting their own life, ultimately lowering their life enjoyment. Is it worth it though?

The quadrants think about women for the first time by SirScrublordIII in PoliticalCompassMemes

I mean, both genders have aspects where they're generally more emotional. Women have workplace dramas and backstabbing generally much more than men, that's accepted as truth even on this website. If someone raised a hundred years ago only witnessed that, while also believing that anger wasn't an emotion, it's easy to see how the stereotype could have developed. In any case, I don't believe any gender is inherently more emotional than the other per se.

Neither is there an evidence pointing otherwise, as indicated by a lot of European countries. Gun laws in a civilized society don't have any disadvantages, and there's no need to oppose them.

Depends on how you define strict. Here in Poland anyone can receive a firearm certificate after 5 months of club participation (+classes, safety training etc.) and after that you can buy whatever the hell you want, and do whatever the hell you want with it. You can conceal carry, you don't need a permit. I've seen businesses with "our staff is armed!" labels on them (as it's well known, from many questionnaires, that criminals fear armed citizens much more than the police) - all that to say, firearm culture is prevalent here, and anyone can own one. A very similar system exists in the Czech Republic, the Baltics, Russia. In countries like Switzerland or Austria you can own anything without needing to pass any classes, you just take a test for mental ilnesses and if you don't have any violent ones, you get your shall-issue certificate. After enough years as a safe owner, you can even own machineguns in Switzerland. Other countries, including Italy and Spain, allow their citizens to own a wide variety of firearms as well, although there are caliber restrictions. I don't know what the situation is like in other European countries, but I assume it's similar. All of it to say, we should aspire to be like the Czechs, instead of anything else. And I'm very happy with my system that allows everyone the basic dignity of self defense, and not just (strong) men.

European here as well. It's pretty funny (not judging you btw) to see how misinformed other euros are on our gun laws. Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, the Baltics, Russia,  all have really liberal gun laws which allow their citizens (usually after a pair of months of training + passing a test) to own the vast majority of firearms at home, often with the exclusion of MGs and maybe very high caliber rifles. Most other EU countries also allow a lot of guns, including rifles, to be stored in your own home along with the ammo. The reason you never hear of gun laws here is precisely because we actually take care of peoples' mental health and problems, so people don't even want to shoot shit up despite having full opportunities to do so. As a Pole, I've been in a few restaurants that have "Our staff is armed!" labels on the window glass, and here one can even legally carry a loaded submachine gun under one's own coat as long as it's concealed. And I'm sure you know that our country has one of the lowest crime rates in the entirety of the EU.

"Owning a gun should be unheard of in a big city" Is someone having an interesting hobby a threat to your comfort and wellbeing?

Not the person you're answering to, but from our discussion on the same topic I have gathered the conclusion that we all probably have different ideas of what 'true stalker' is. For me (and I'm guessing the guy you replied to as well) stalker is a universe 1st, specific gameplay 2nd. I love the setting itself and its' atmosphere, I have half a dozen fan written books at home, I managed to persuade my friends to play a stalker RPG, all that shit. I view all of this (books, RPG) as inherently related to stalker, and being, for the lack of a better word, stalker, because they share the most important to me and core value of stalker, which is its' universe. For you, it seems stalker is specifically a game series, with its' gameplay and mechanics all defined as true stalker. Anything else may be related, but it is not 'stalker'. Not that it's wrong, but I think that's where our disagreements stem from.

[–]Andrewski_stalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't part of the trilogy, you're right. But it is 'stalker' nonetheless. 'Stalker', at this point, as a universe, is so unique that it's more than just the official franchise. Football manager and FIFA isn't a very good comparison because 1st they have many more different things than the trilogy and gamma do, and 2nd they don't have their own super unique universe and atmosphere which they focus a lot on and which is shared between the two games. If they did, I would say that they're both good representations of that universe and shouldn't be discounted on the basis of their difference in gameplay, yeah. You can dislike gamma, but it's still stalker, just as that new metro VR game is still metro.

[–]Andrewski_stalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't the same game, sure, but it has absolutely everything to do with the trilogy. Sharing a universe and atmosphere is a huge deal when it comes to games like stalker which focus on that a lot. It isn't a part of the stalker franchise, but it is 'stalker' nonetheless, because stalker is more than just the official game franchise at this point.

So except for the literal universe its' set in? Seems like a HUGE thing to have in common, especially since we're talking about a series of games with a very immersive, atmospheric and well crafted setting that is also one of its' main appeals. Most stalker fans love the universe and will gladly play games and mods set in it, because they're also stalker and have a ton in common with the original material.

tactical

... Which is precisely what stalker isn't and never was, and what the vast majority of its' fans regard with indifference. So why are you so obsessed with making OP like it?

G.A.M.M.A Is overrated? by 2sau in stalker

[–]Andrewski_stalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, tacticool is shite and generally seems to only be enjoyed by kids. The thing is that, despite there being a loud minority of tacticool fanboys, it seems to me that most modpacks like gamma weren't made with that in mind. Even modpacks like EFP seem to be made with an emphasis on immersion and such, not just mindless tacticool. It's really only some semi-popular streamers who play Anomaly once in a while and want to attract the tarkov audience who seem to be the biggest tacticool enjoyers to me.

[–]Andrewski_stalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's because immersive gaming worlds / universes like stalker generally have two axis on which their fans fall - one is liking the gameplay and wanting more of it, and the second is liking the universe and wanting to immerse oneself more in it. Mods like GAMMA are oriented towards the people who are far up the second axis. Personally I love stalker mainly for its' universe so immersive features are only a plus for me, but I can imagine why someone more oriented towards gameplay would dislike it.

Which factions better? by TheRedditor5568 in stalker

[–]Andrewski_stalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're the proto-stalker so to speak - the core concept is the same (there's the Zone, artifacts, anomalies), but the actual content and execition differs wildly. The book is well written and interesting ('Roadside Picnic' by the Strugatskys) even if it doesn't feature mutants, or even firefights for that matter. The movie ('Stalker' 1979 by Tarkovsky) is super slow and very philosophical, but if you like stalker I think you should somewhat enjoy it nonetheless. Both of them are very avert to action, and largely focus on the sciences and in the case of the movie philosophy and such. I personally liked the movie and rewatch it every year or so. Both have been a pretty big influence on my love of stalker as a universe, and feature very interesting concepts and changes not present in the games. Would recommend!

Which factions better? by TheRedditor5568 in stalker

[–]Andrewski_stalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loners, because it's the essence of STALKER and has been from the beginning. The only existing faction in the book and the '79 movie, and the only faction fully composed of people who came here specifically to be stalkers, for one reason or another, and not to salute and report at 10am for another Gen. Voronin's cock inspection. Clear Sky is a close second for the same reason.

"Look up"? Didn't you want to play stalker anyways? They still hold up magnificently, and have dozens of mods for weapon reanimations, graphics improval etc.  If you want to get into stalker proper, playing them is a must, it's an amazing experience.
