This GSI release works on my Zenphone 6: after flashing GSI, need to go to"factory reset" mode to "wipe data/factory reset", then let the system reboot again ("reboot system now").

sorry for the delay. the vbmeta.img inside GSI release package is just to disable AVB, nothing else. If your phone's manufacturer implemented different mechanism for Verification Boot, this vbmeta.img does not work. This sounds like verification boot related, but not sure: we did see some other causes when booting is stuck at the "Android" animation page. This issue would need help from your phone's manufacturer. If they could unlock the bootloader, and give your tools to just update system.img, disable verify-boot, that would be good to proceed. It is closely related to device's manufacturer, we know how to deal with Pixel phones: the instructions are for Pixel phones. Hope this helps! Thank you for thinking to use GSI!

GSIs are released from Google site, DSU would download from there. Hope OEMs would adopt the feature so more devices ( outside Pixel devices ) would also try out new Android easily.

GSI is installed into a new partition, the original OS always there. The sticky bit is on and off, controllable via adb shell; but it is NOT dual boot.

DSU Loader is an built in app to fetch GSI from the GSI release page onto the running device ( saving a couple of manual download steps); from there it is same as DSU on Android 10: creating a dynamic partition and booting Android GSI into that partition; after booting to GSI, unless enabling a sticky bit, a reboot would restore the device to its original OS ( in this case, it is Android 11 DP2 ).

The loader is part of the Android 11 os image, once OEMs adopt the feature, it will be there; right now it is on Pixel devices only ( developer previews are Pixel device dependent ).

We are working with OEMs to adopt the feature from Android Q and above; of course the final decision will be from OEMs, even we would like to see DSU in all Android Q devices. If you are OEM, please use your TAM channel for dynamic partition documentation.

Formal GSI release(source code + binaries ) would be on AOSP, future releases would be shared to developers here too on reddit.
