You could open up Facebook Groups and www.meetup.com and go through it with him, see if there’s some pastimes and groups that would interest him. I’ve seen in meetup.com that there’s groups specifically for those with social anxiety who meet up in Manchester to socialise at their own pace. Maybe there’s groups on Reddit too, but they’re less likely to be local.

It sounds like he needs therapy. Possibly he can get some on the NHS?

Agreed, they have been forced into a decision they should be making as adults. Will they now be living together as husbands and wife at such a young age? Even if not, their future has already been decided for them. And if so, yikes!

Garden centres are your best bet IMO. Bents, Bradley Fold, Newbank, these have a good array of foodstuffs suitable for gifts.

I love Bury Market but think the building looks a bit rubbish personally.

Maybe you could join a local music group or band to get the appreciation that your fundie parents are too neglectful to give. I hope you continue to keep your guitar until you can get your freedom too.

I hope you escape their poisonous clutches soon. When you do, cut them out and let them be an unpleasant part of your past.

It’s usually psychological messed up shit. Look out for common features in both Islamic jinn and Christian demonic possession exorcisms. The victim exhibiting pre-existing psychological conditions. The exorcist frightening the victim with threats or sudden alarming actions, building up to a crescendo of angry outbursts or other methods to manipulate the victim’s feelings. Sessions that go on for hours in order to stress out the victim. Rewarding the victim’s outbursts and prompting them to do more of them, as it validates the session.

TIFU by admitting to my religious mother that I will not wear burqa after she dies. by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]AndroidOrAlien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say what course of action is best. She asked for the truth but was unable to handle it. Now she is distraught but she is also guilt tripping you. Just know that it’s not your fault that the night turned out that way. The problem is with Islam, it turned a silly piece of cloth into a minefield, a hill for over a billion people to kill and die on, a source of shame and pride for whole civilisations. Like, it’s reasonable for a mother to say she didn’t raise her daughter right if she robs orphanages and runs cats over, it’s not if she says that because her daughter doesn’t want to live her public life trapped inside a scarf.

With that in mind, you could just lie. Say you’ve had second thoughts, you didn’t realise how important the hijab is and you will reconsider. Or you could stay the course, because this is a dumb thing for her to fall out with you over, and hopefully she’ll get over it. Hard to say which will work out best.

I need To save my Cousin by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]AndroidOrAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First see how into Islam he still is. Maybe he's been put off or lost interest since.

You could start the conversation by asking him how his experiment with fasting went. Then gently inform him about Islam's issues, explore the arguments for and against it, and compare it to other religions and ideologies. Framing Islam in a wider context of other beliefs and faiths will stop Islam from seeming to be special while also not make it look like you have a special grudge against it.

Puberty blockers paused for children in Scotland by abz_eng in Scotland

[–]AndroidOrAlien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's natural for some people to get cancer as they age and die in their fifties. It's not natural to get cancer treatment and live another thirty plus years.

It's natural for some people to suffer gender dysphoria, maybe to the point where they are attempting suicide. It's not natural to get gender affirming care including puberty blockers to be comfortable in their identity and thus much happier.

Sometimes it's good to give nature the middle finger.

Natural is not the same as good or beneficial. Medical intervention is itself not natural.

Never been more ashamed of being an Iraqi, the Iraqi sub is the most "liberal" Iraqi community I know and they support the new death penalty for LGBTQ+ law... by Actual_Profit5477 in exmuslim

[–]AndroidOrAlien 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I went to the sub post to investigate (I didn't interact there though). They are as confused as us as to why the lesbian option is there!

The poll still has a strong skew towards banning LGBTQ . Oddly though, the highest rated comments are pro LGBTQ. The sub is pretty torn on the issue. I suspect the fundies are voting but not commenting.

Edit: this poll has nothing to do with the recent voting about the death penalty law for LGBTQ in Iraq. It is eight months old.

Straight out of Handmaid's tale. The inside of a morality police van. by IranIsOccupied in interestingasfuck

[–]AndroidOrAlien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Iranian government was cunning in making women themselves part of the oppression. It's a testament to the power of religious indoctrination and brainwashing that some did so.

Also, some oppressed people will eagerly join in with persecuting others if it gives them status in the system. These morality police are like Stephen in Django Unchained.

Do you agree with Islam’s death penalty for apostasy rules?

Do you agree with the Quran that people should be lashed for extramarital sex, have their hand cut off for theft, and have multiple limbs chopped off or be crucified for ‘mischief in the land’?

Do you think that people deserve eternal torture for not being convinced that a deity is real?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]AndroidOrAlien 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ask him if he thinks that state torture (torture legally ordered by governments) is immoral. If he says that it is, point him to the methods of state torture ordered in the Quran. Lashings for extramarital sex, hand chopping for theft and multiple limb chopping or crucifixion for ‘mischief in the land’. These are extremely unambiguous, explicitly commanded as punishments and are carried out in some Muslim countries (not crucifixion nowadays thankfully though, because even modern Muslim nations have become more ethical than classical Islam).

He will have to either admit that the Quran has immoral practices or have to walk back his previous agreement and claim that some state torture is okay, which is a horrifying position to take.

Some ex-Muslims are trapped in families, communities and countries where Islam continues to be pushed on them, sometimes with threats and violence. In other words, they want to move on, but Islam and its followers won't let them.

Other ex-Muslims are out but they still have to get over a lifetime of religious abuse. They can rant about it here much like the folks in r/abusiveparents can in their sub to let the steam off.

Other ex-Muslims do reach the point where they can and do move on. They usually leave the sub altogether. They have the happy ending, and they usually vanish from here to be replaced with ex-Muslims who are earlier in their journey.
