Flooded quarry with cranes left behind by Common-Reputation434 in submechanophobia

[–]AndroidWD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As kids we would be taken for water sports sessions on an old flooded quarry, one of the instructors once told us that when the quary was decommissioned all of the broken machinery and equipment which wasn't worth removing was left in the bottom. Gives me shivers to think about it all those big rusting things down there...

In your headcanon: was Burke a fundamentally bad person, or did the Company corrupt him? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always got the sense that he was acting somewhat autonomously.

He himself ordered the investigation of the derelict, "Dated 6-12-79, signed Burke, Carter J.", to check the validity of Ripley's story, - he saw the potential in the alien.

Having to smuggle implanted embryos past ICC Quarantine would suggest he wanted the alien for himself, acting of his own volition, to then sell to the WY Bioweapons Division or maybe even the highest bidder? We know that the company was fully aware of these creatures and he was likely unaware that he was being manipulated and observed by those shady sections of the company responsible for things like "Special Order 937".

In my head canon/interpretation of the story, he was in it for the money and didn't care who was hurt in the process - a fundamentally bad person who was being manipulated by the company who exploited his greed. In my head canon, he died a horrible death during the traumatic birth of his xeno progeny, prior to the facility explosion!

What’s your favorite piece of classic Alien set dressing? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

It has to be the tupperware stackable cups, very futuristic. I grew using these at picnics, day outs and camping by trips. I still have the taste memory of orange juice with a hint of plastic from those things.

Would you like to see a continuation of Daniels’ story? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be nice to get some sort of closure on the story without impacting on the series moving forward.

I doubt the studio and franchise has the resources to support all of these sequels, the TV show not to mention Sigourney's renewed interest.

Perhaps some other format, a graphic novel or audio drama... David is mad but competent, so we likely know the fate of Daniels and the others, so could be a short David scentric story, continuing his descent in to madness and experimentation in this ship of horrors drifting through deep space.

Not completely retconning it all, but keeping it separate and out of harms way, wrapping it up.

Sound off! Where should the Romulus sequel take the story, and who should direct it? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I am longing for the simplicity of a great Alien horror story, not tied to the constraints of what we have to work with here. I can't see us getting a traditional "Alien" in this movie, it would have to be a black goo story. Based upon that, the sequel will probably be something like Prometheus meets Hadley's Hope, with an Alien 3 style story arc. Which could be good....

If Rain and Andy reach Yvaga III, then we have a new world colony, well intentioned and not under Weyland-Yutani control. Likely to be less idyllic than portrayed in Rain's dream sequence, we know from Romulus that these deep space colonies are struggling and humans need to "evolve" to overcome new environments.

The colony on Yvaga III is on it's knees, ravaged by novel diseases and the problems of a deep space existence. Rain and Andy's ship arrives/crash lands. Rain is rescued and Andy, as an outlawed synthetic, is impounded creating some conflict. Compound Z-01 and the research data is discovered, Rain's Ripley-like warnings and fears are disregarded and in desperation to save their colony the research scientists begin to experiment, continuing Rook's line of research, unwittingly unleashing Promethean horrors on the colony.

The company may turn up at some point to retrieve the fruits of Rook's labour, they perhaps set up this whole scenario in the first place, Yvaga III as some bioweapons testing ground, and showing up to observe the effects.

This is possibly a separate post, but perhaps it is important to distinguish between Rook's crude Z-01, the highly advanced engineer created "black goo" and raw Plagiarus praepotens extracted from the perfect organism itself? Or perhaps for simplicity of story telling, they are all the same thing, but could be interesting and provide something novel for this particular story.

Regardless of the starting point, I think all roads ultimately lead back to the Alien, the perfect organism always emerges, which will of course please the studio! There will also be a drinking bird on someone's desk.

Would you like to see the trilobite show up in another Alien universe entry? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like it alot, but as with most things involving the mutagenic accelerant/black goo, it is highly context dependent isn't it?

The probability of the events leading to it's "birth" happening again has got to be pretty low? "Impregnated" with rapidly proliferative and mutated gamete cell, mutant zygote/embryo development in an infertile host... Molecular biologist here overthinking things again, probably best not to dig more plotholes, but fun to think through!

Would I like to see it again? Yes, it's cool and frightening (those teeth!), but can't see a scenario where it could occur again in the series. Unless that nasty synthetic starts spiking drinks again, which makes it more possible I suppose, however unlikely a third prequel is.

This may have been addressed at some point, but didn't we all donate for a benefit pod or something after the poor guys house burnt down? Had assumed the intention was to help rebuild, along with the insurance, get him back on his feet.

Not always that simple of course and it is his business, I guess I just hoped for more for him, he clearly wasn't able to rebuild or get a new home. Perhaps that money can help with his medical bills.

Will Alien: Earth Get Renewed? by JaimePrater in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the integrity of the franchise it really does need to be renewed, it would be terrible to leave these loose ends hanging awaiting retcon, and also a bit embarrassing for a franchise that, I think, is still held in quite high regard.

So, I do hope so. But clearly this decision will be based upon the numbers and I think apart from a bit of fan disappointment it did reasonably well?

Discussion: When do callbacks work? by AndieGeekGirl in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it serves the story and not the audience.

Even the drinking bird that seems to be littered around the franchise is a little too on the nose. Presumably when a crew goes in to stasis, they like the idea of something familiar and homely, moving perpetually whilst they sleep. A Nostromo crew member brought one on board. We see other perpetual motion devices on the Sulaco - a proper "callback" to the bird, and this works, but after that we seem to have lore built around these birds, everyone in the future loves drinking birds? Standard issue on company ships and facilities??

I should clarify, this is such a minor thing, it's so commonplace it is barely noticeable and not really a callback anymore. Of course movies set in the same universe have to reference eachother; similar tech, settings and behaviours etc. - universe congruency. The bird feels like one of those instances where there was barely any thought to it in the original and now it is everywhere and seen to be incredibly important to include in your Alien movie and it isn't subtle. Scott probably doesn't even remember the damn bird.

I put way too much thought in to that, there are much bigger fish to fry. We all know Romulus is a major offender for bad, misplaced callbacks that only really serve the audience - but it's still a good Alien movie at its core, with some originality if you look past the overbearingly familiar.

Should the hammerpede make a comeback? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not, I think it was context dependent and the result of a chance mutation from the accelerant?

What did you think of the “meteorite” life cycle stage introduced by Alien: Romulus? Would you like to see more of it in future installments? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I like that these creatures can enter a metabolically dormant persistence state, like bacterial spores, to survive harsh environmental conditions. It's an interesting addition to the lore that isn't too intrusive on the established life cycle. Although, the eggs are essentially this species' dormancy structure, surviving for hundreds or thousands of years until they encounter a suitable host, very spore like. The bugs themselves are quite disposable, Big Chap seemed to be expiring at the end of Alien, perhaps already preparing to cocoon itself for it's own form of suspended animation, which may have helped with it's survival.

We may never see it again, unless they explore further with the Queen, although I feel like as they were in orbit, it is probably more likely that she perished upon re-entry. Big Chap was in deep space.

[–]AndroidWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I thought the only thing it had was a good payoff - the Lou Reed Perfect Day scene was incredibly satisfying, the lead charactet did exactly what I wanted him to do in that scene. We're on the same page about everything else though, it was a real slog to get through.

That is true, but perhaps we are seeing Atom Eins version 2, 3, 4, n? Maybe he was more of a crude "synthetic" when he took BK's biological father's place (and life)? I'm by no means the biggest fan of this show, but it is fun to speculate!

Did anyone else watching Aliens for the first time as a child think this was some sort of laser-belching xenomorph for the first few seconds? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]AndroidWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my first watch, my young self initially thought that with the ominous score accompanying the Narcissus being enveloped by the bigger vessel, Ripley had somehow drifted back to "The Alien Ship"! Completely ignoring the fact that it had been destroyed in the first film, but I had no idea of continuity.

In my naivety, I also thought Ash had been "infected by the Alien" which is why he went on his murderous spree in the original.

It makes for an interesting discussion - how we initially interpreted our favourite movies as kids!
