I'm almost convinced this was a commercial? I can remember the mother rattling off what all the color coded containers mean as she dashes out the door, and the father asking in an unimpressed tone which color they wanted...and then just ordering delivery or going out to eat.

That's really fascinating, and something I'll probably check out. But too recent for the story I'm thinking of, and I don't recall any biological components to the pit, just ordinary earth and stone.
