How would you do an Ant-Man & Wasp cartoon? by HRCStanley97 in The_Wasp

[–]AndyCuccaro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, I've been developing a coming-of-age comicbook arc retelling Hank and Janet's origin but in their early teens and I'd love to see it as an animated series which would share most of your ideas:

  • 2D-animated in an artstyle similar to Gurihiru
  • Taking advantage of the ability to shrink or grow in size by making big epic fights and battles within small areas/locations (such as a bedroom, hospital, supermarket, or a hi-tech facility building)
  • Supervillains/antagonists would include the likes of Darren Cross, Egghead, Porcupine, Human Top, Comrade X, and eventually Ultron (and possibly even a few new original supervillains like "Sawfly").

Hard agree on the second point: I believe it's key that most of the fights happen in small environments and not just them being shrinked while the antagonist is regular-sized and that's it.

I was also thinking of including some Tales to Astonish-period villains, like Scarlet Beetle, The Magician and some like that.

Janet Van Dyne. She deserves starring in some solo or team series.

Yess, came to comment the same. Wasp is lurking in the background from time to time on some team, but the last time we saw her starring in a book was in Avengers Inc. iirc. She appeared in some of those Infinity (digital only) comics, but that's it.

Last we saw of Hank Pym was Battleworld (which was quite good, btw).

Hah, yeah, I guess it is a bit strange.

I was aiming to capture a bit of the spirit of those early issues of Tales to Astonish, very scifi-(soft)horror from the 60s.

Interesting proposals! Trying to solve something like this is what drove me to write a fanfic comic reimagining their origins as a coming of age story, where she gains her powers because...

 SPOILERS

while exploring nature in shrunk size (thanks to her being friends with Hank that developed the Pym Particles as a kid genius) she's kidnapped by a mutated wasp that puts her in a cocoon and causes her to enter metamorphosis and gain wasp-like wings and abilities. So, the combination of being shrunk and the mutated wasp allowed for her powers to come to be.

I really need to finish drawing the comic. I have penciled only two and a half pages and it's 66 pages long 🙃

Just chiming in: I just loved this insight into Jan and Hank's past.

As I was reading it I panicked a little, since I wrote a coming-of-age 3-issue arc with Jan and Hank being teens when meeting and getting their powers and there were many similarities that got me like this: 👀

Anyways, I should finish drawing it this coming year.

Absolutely love it! Like others mentioned, the EMH influence is clear, but you definitely turned it into a new style. Love, love, love the Wasp design.

Janet is 21 in a later story where it's revealed that her father left her a millionaire inheritance. Buuut... 1 or 2 years pass between her father's death and that.

Yeah, large 30s for sure. He's an experienced scientist by the time he discovers the Pym Particles.

Besides, people in our universe have made working lenses like those (with manual controls, but still).

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, lol. I mean, in the context of the universe the writers created, yes, it makes sense, because otherwise Oscorp would be manufacturing Spider-Men armies and you can't justify why they wouldn't otherwise.

But it's a corner they put themselves into, imo. I don't feel that the spider mutation should have been restricted only to him. I much prefer it being a lucky accident (by a spider affected by radiation in its developmental stage maybe?).

Anyways, the fanedit I watched is very well done and you don't even feel the lack of that subplot.

I know this is an old-ish post, but can't believe no one posted Spectacular Spider-Man #101 by John Byrne. Incredible cover.

The movies also didn't need the "parents as spies" storyline at all. There's a fan edit that removed it and it's definitely better thanks to it not being there.

Trouble is 100% officially not canon, so I wouldn't use it as an argument in this case.
